1989 GTU 5spd 1/4 mile times......
Alright guys I had to do something to de-stress after a shitty month so me and a couple of friends went to the local drags. out of our group two cars ran both FC's my 89 GTU and my bud Wankel7's 91 Turbo. I did 7 runs total but the timing equip. screwed up my first run and I didn't get a slip. 3 of the runs are me and Wankel7 2 runs are bracket racing and one run was me alone. My car's mods are as follows:
Mazdatrix Fully uncollected "true dual" exhaust with Racing beat mufflers.
Cheap 15 dollars cone filter from autozone.
BBS(vert) wheels with Potenzas in the rear and GTU Five spoke "sunflower" wheels with shity tires up front.
Removed Air pump
Removed power steering(cooling loop and lines are still in it)
Removed A/c lines(comp. and brackedtrey along with condensor/dryer are still on it)
Removed Cruise Control
Altered vaccume system(no rats nest)
Problems with the car are:
Bad front shocks(she bounces!)
Bad drive shaft U-joints
No underbelly pan(black or aluminum)
Exhaust leak on the rear of the last presilencer
Rear auxilary port actuator is seize(my fault)
Weather conditions: Temp 80-84* F, slight wind, Clear sky.
Runs are as follows(60' and mph are not working on their system so they aren't included in the runs):
#1
R/t= .679
E/t= 16.4
#2
R/t= .504
E/t= 16.429
#3
R/t= .566
E/t= 16.212
#4
R/t= .520
E/t= 16.314
#5
RED LIGHT! >:O
R/t= .443
E/t= 16.170
#6
R/t= .721
E/t= 16.448
My best time without a redlight was 16.212 Best time(redlight) was 16.170. My reaction times were respectable, atleast I think, this was my second night out. Last time was before I got in the accident with my blue 87 sport. This car feels a tad stronger since it has a rebuilt engine and its got a slightly better intake system. My buddy did some good runs too but I don't want to take his glory away. He can make his own post if he wants.
Incase you all car, doubt it, I got to the second round of elimination where I redlighted against a turbo eclipse(bad driver I think) whi ran a 17.608 which pissed me off. I knew I redlined right off but I cought up to his **** at the line.

i ran a 15.5@88 in my NA man! you got some catchin up to do
make sure your VDI and both 6pi actuators/sleeves work properly. i went from running high 17's to running mid 15's just by fixing those. huge difference.
also get a new driveshaft and some drag radials on the rear. i had street tires (225's on my FD wheels) and i was dropping the clutch from about 5500rpms. in my TII i was dropping the hammer from about 6500rpms and getting some 1.9 60ft's.
get some drag radials and get that 6pi and vdi workin and you'll see 15's guaranteed

Yeah I know its dirt slow. I might have run faster lol! In any case I am trying to fix the auxilary port that doesn't open and I am testing the noid for the VDI in a bit.

Advance ur timing, angle the airflow meter down slightly, are u using the cold air intake that u made? How about wiring the six ports and vdi open just for when ur drag racing? I'm always above 6k rpm when in the powerband at the strip, how about u? Don't be afraid to squirt water on the intake manifold to prevent heat soaking and keep the hood open between runs. I did this both times I went to the track, and my latest time was on an 89* day with 0 humidity . .
Are u doing a nasty burnout in the waterbox and then crawling forward a little to pick up all the soft race rubber left down from all the other cars? Tire pressure 15psi or less?
Your motor might just have low compression. In that case, tear it down, rebuild it and do a nice street port when ur in there.

Timming is stock as far as I know. The afm is angled down. The cold air piping is warehoused but i think I could fab it up again. I don't do any burn outs. They won't let us on the sticky rubber. I didn't have a water spray so no anti-heatsoak stuff. I opened the hood for a little while but the line wasn't long enough. Our hummidity was probably around 50-60%(guessing) My tire pressure was around 28 psi on the rears I didn't have an air tank to raise them back up so i didn't want to drive home on low pressure. The engine is a rebuild from three years ago but I have yet to check the compression. I will soon I hope.

those two things are going to make way more difference than all that crappy little water sprays and anti heatsoak stuff. especially when its only 79 degrees outside.
it really made a big difference on my car when it was NA

how so? By the physics of it it would take more air going through the afm to push the cone back so that means the ecu would see a certain amount of air but in reality there is more air going in there. That would mean that there is more air to fuel than normal which would be lean wouldn't it? Sorry I might be wrong.

Hey all,
Me and James went out to the track again. I wasn't planning on running again but a friend of ours wanted to try out his Firebird he got off of ebay and I said "fok-it" so I ran with him and then with another guy. The first run the track gave me a slap across the face because the timing lights on my side didn't work. The second time I ran a newer grand am. Well I dropped almost 2 tenths off my previous best of E/t= 16.212
Here is my slip info for this run. The car is has the exact same setup as before.
R/t=0.882
MPH= 85.70
E/t=16.037
I almost broke 15 sec. I hope to break 15.9xx when I get my new LIM without a broken actuator rod.

i think the speed difference between s4's and s5's is neglegable. every s4 i've seen running at our track is running high 10's (somewhere in the 16's in the 1/4) and i ran a 9.8 (15.5 in the 1/4)

Yeah i'm still working on the A/c Removal and the Speaker removal since I don't have a radio now.

Do you have any of the emissions/etc still? Your injector bleeds hooked up? I'm having some serious issues right now with my FPR/injector bleeds, and possibly a misinstalled aux sleeve, but my damned car is hideously slow. Almost a full 1 1/2 second slower than any s4 I run against, but it seems to be the same with any s5 n/a I see, they always seem to be slower than the s4. I doubt it's weight, because even a damn vert pulls on my poor GTUs like I'm in a civic! Oh well, we'll see once I get my few problems hammered out.

Yeah, there are two of them right behind each of the secondary injectors. I'm going to hook them back up tonight and see if it helps any, but I've got so many problems with idle/accel that it's annoying.
