So I went to adjust my timing and went to ground the intial test connector. I grabbed the first single pin connector I could find in the area of the leading coil. I grounded out the little black one and sparks flew.

I forgot it was the GREEN connector! DOH!
I went to hook up my timing light to the wires and I get nothing. No timing light. Pull the wires off the leading coil. No sparks. Nothing. What did I do to it? Did I short something that will go back to the ecu?

It idles smoothly. Is that possible with a non-functioning leading coil?

You cant see spark from just pulling off a spark plug wire. The electric lead is too far up inside the boot to jump a spark. Insert an old plug in the wire and lay it up on the body somewhere, I prefer taking off the rubber strut cover and laying the plug near those bolts. Crank adn watch for sparks. The car wouldnt run well or at all without leading spark.

You might have blown a fuse, or might have done nothing at all.

 

Just pulled my lead plugs off and the car idles fine. Still trying to figure how bad things are for you.

 

the coil is probably OK, but the igniter is probably fried. try connecting the timing light again and try using a spark plug or test plug(looks like spark plug with a small light). if still no spark you are going to need a new igniter if available or get a used coil pack from a junk yard(if available). used they are not to expensive. any second gen model can interchange.

 

[TIMS] You are right. I did some swapping of parts between my '91 TII (Fried Leading ignition) with my functioning '86 RX-7.

And the ignitor is fried. Mazdatrix has one for $250. Think I will try the local dealer that cuts me deals Or a salvage yard.

I have bought the coil packs from the "pull your own part" type junk yards and payed $25-$30, just tell them it is a coil when you go to pay. these units are very tough unless shorted(as you found out) so the junk yard units are usually good.
