couple questions from teh n00b

Hey all -

I have a Datsun 1200 that I'm seriously considering dropping a rotary in and I have a guy with a motor that he'll give me for free (I know..) - I don't think I want this motor for my project but I have a couple questions about it. My original plan was for a carby 12a but this motor would be free although he claims it has "blown seals" but it does run..

The motor is from an 86 rx7 so does that make it a 6 port? What year did Mazda stop building 4 port 13bs?

Are the mounts on this motor the same or close to those of a 12a (I assume all 12a mounts are the same but not sure about this)

I know its EFI, on a scale of 1 - 10 how much of a PITA would the wiring be on this swap if I went EFI - I know this is a tough question but I'm really leaning towards a carburated motor for simplicity. Is it possible to convert the EFI motors to carbs with out too much hassle?

Anyone have much luck with megasquirt one these motors?

Thanks for any insight, I have squat for experience with rotaries but I'm learning..

All 86+ na motor are 6port, and all 86+ turbo engines are 4 port.
That would be really cool to drop a rotary in a 1200. Many have done it with huge success so finding info won't be too hard. Look in Aus/NZ forums, mags, websites - they do datsun swaps daily.

Pretty risky buying an engine with blown seals - means engine NEEDS rebuilt. You can do it yourself properly for <$1000. There are other options, Jspec, used engine, ebay, etc.

As you said, pretty hard to give a rating for the wiring complexidy, and I have no experience swapping rotary into other vehicles. I imagine you would want to go with an EMS for a few reasons: simplicity, reliability, power, and upgradability.

I have heard of a few people using megasquirt, but rarely and haven't found any solid info on it yet.

If it were me with the 1200, and not a huge budget, I would buy a decent shape jspec 2nd gen turbo engine (800-1000 us) from a reputable importer, and swap that in.

Actually if it is an 86 motor it has to be a 6-port N/A. The the turbo, 4 port, 13B didn't make it state side until 87.

Thanks for the responses. So were the NA 13bs prior to 86 4 ports? And are the mounts for this 86 the same as the earlier 13bs?

Now thinking a 13b is probably the way to go as I read parts availability is better. Also, can an EFI motor be converted to carbs? Thanks again

NA = 6 Ports
Turbo = 4 Ports

Mounting is the same for S4 and S5.

Yes you can convert an EFI to a carbie, just not sure why.
