A great 1st Gen Rally story:
From an interview with Tom McGeer, 6 time canadian rally champion, 3 time North american Champion, and Subaru Factory driver:
By the way he started rallying in 1986 with an RX-3!!
BB: What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you on a rally?

TM: '87, Defi Ste-Agathe. It was a big two-day event, and all the big names were there, it was quite an event. And here we were in my brand-new RX-7. I had just thrown it together, and it had great big fender flares on the back of the car, these skinny little rally tires, and totally stock horsepower, a beat-up old motor in it. Malcolm Swann was co-driving for me. On the first stage, all the fender flares got ripped off, so we had bodywork hanging off the car. We got into the longest stage, which I think was about 49 kilometers, and it was in the evening of the first day. We were flying down the stage and about half-way through Malcolm said, "The oil pressure's dropping." I said, "Well, what's the temperature doing?" He said, "Oh, the oil temperature's rising." Uh oh... He said, "The oil pressure's gone to zero." The engine was still running, so I thought, "Well, let's keep going." And he said, "Oh, the oil temperature's dropping now!" Great, everything's OK now, it must be just the gauge. Of course there was no oil left in the engine, that's why the oil temperature was dropping, 'cause there was nothing for the thermometer to work with. Well we went on for about another five kilometers, and from about 6000 rpm the engine just seized solid. The car just came screeching to a halt. We got out of the car, and that's it, it's over. We left the car and got a ride back with course closing, who was right behind us, 'cause we were dead last on the road. We went back to get the car later that night with the truck, and I got into the car, and thought, "I wonder if it turns over?" Sure enough it did, so we poured a whole bunch of oil in the car and fired it up, and the engine ran great. [laughs] We drove the car back to town, everything was fine, we checked it over. We went to the organizers and asked them if we could keep running the next day. They said, "Oh, sure." We got back in, ran the car the next day, and then continued to run the car for three more events with that motor. Never touched it! Whatever it was that caused the oil to go away, I have no idea. But I think when the engine seized it actually tightened everything up, and sealed it all back up again. Saved us a ton of money on a new engine though!
