84 SE: running rough and YES I've searched
Let's see if anyone has ever had this/these problems. Any and all feedback is welcomed. First off let me say that I have searched and read all sorts of stuff, but my problem is more of a combination of problems (I think anyway). Ok, so, the car will start fine, and then idle incredibly rough for 5-10 minutes (it's -10C right now). First problem. After it's warmed up, it will fall right to a perfect 800 RPM idle. Great. After another few minutes of idling, and slight revving (nothing over 3500), it will start to absolutely spew white smoke, and run so bad that it sounds like a bridgeport, brap brap brap, etc. You can keep the car running if you hold the accelerator, but it dies after a few seconds when you let off. Second problem. This started happening right before I moved to BC 4 months ago and parked the car here in Winnipeg. It's been sitting, but my dad starts it regularly and shuts it off typically before it starts belching smoke. Also, the spark plugs are brand new BR8EQ14s (had BR9s in before this) and they come out wet and reeking of gasoline after we pull them everytime. The top 2 (trailing) are wetter and smell stronger than the bottom 2 (leading). We know we're getting spark and fuel obviously, because the car will start and run fine for a few minutes. We're thinking that maybe something is leaking into the intake manifold (like antifreeze??). Is it possible that when the car warms up, the gasket starts to leak due to the heat? The local RX7 guru had mentioned something about that before I left 4 months ago. The car also runs incredibly rich, and I'm thinking it could be the O2 sensor, am I right? Would that little bugger cause the car to stink like gas/exhaust all the time and run rough on startup? If anyone has any insight as to why the car belches smoke and the plugs are soaking wet, that would be great.
Sorry for the long post, but I figured I'd try to be as descriptive as possible, even though I most likely still forgot some stuff.
Thanks for all the help!
Zac
