I have been searching in the forum for the answer to this, but not sure I have found it. Not an expert mechanics at all, so bare with me. Recently, when I start the engine in the morning (12A), it sounds like a lawnmover - I don't know how to better describe it. With the choke fully pulled out, it goes to about 1100 rpm. Then, within a minute or so I hear this brop, brop, broop (with a strong gas smell coming from the exhaust up to this point) and then the normal sound of the engine running. By then the rpm goes up to 2-2.5k and everything seems normal after that. It's like if one of the rotors doesn't start right away and then eventually wakes up and joins the party, if you know what I mean. The spark plugs have 5k miles in them, the wires 20k. I drive the car daily, and at least once a day I drive it hard for a couple of mins or more. Any idea as to what causes this and what can I do to remedy it? thanks guys.

 

you might need to do a tune up. i could be that one of your sparks arent firing and then after running it for a minute it starts.

 

running in one rotor!!

let the engine idle, and pull the spark plug wires one at a time. for example. pull the spark plug wires on the front rotor-change in idle, then its good. do the same in the rear.

Bottom line, if there are no changes in idle, more than likely, engine is shot. make sure that there are sparks and the engine is not flooded. do compression check.

 

Ive noticed on my car when i start it in the mornings and its REALLY cold, it will run rought at like 1500-1700k for a few mins, then when the engines starts to warm up it goes up at a smooth 2500 rpms, and my car has straight pipes to the stock muffler, so it sounds like a lawnmower all the time

 

yea, you guys need to check ignition and fuel.

My car does not need a choke, I pump it twice, start and idles fine

My engine does the same thing. I really doubt the engine is shot, i only have <20k on it, and the plugs/wires.
I am almost positive that it is a spark plug or wire, i have had a plug wire come off while i was driving and it acted exactly the same. ill go check it out in a little bit.

 

Thanks man, appreciated. Talking about wire plugs coming out while driving, once I had a plug come out while I was driving, just as I floored it to get ahead of somebody and make a turn. No words to describe the noise the engine was making... at first I didn't even think it was coming out of my engine, but out of the truck I was passing, and I was thinking "what the hell does this guy have under the hood for christ sakes!" and then I made the turn and the noise was still with me... dead giveaway. Pulled up, open the hood, find one of the plugs still attached to the wire but not to the engine!

 

hrmmm maybe a sign that you need a little more than finger tight on the plugs :P

I'm with Mike, check your plugs/wires. It sounds like your motor is missing quite a bit during warmup as well, so you may have an overall weak spark condition that is unable to ignite the enriched mixture from cold startup.

 

yeah. and that's from the passenger's seat where my laptop was sitting - you should hear what's like outside the car with the hood open!

 

I've inspected the plugs, and seem to be in OK condition. But I'll change them anyways since I have Denso and want to go back to NGK. Thanks.

 

Well, I changed the plugs yesterday and that seemed to handle the problem. No more lawnmover. Now its zoom zoom!
