Upgrade Stereo but keep stock head unit...Possible??

Hi, ive got an 88' vert that came with the pioneer tape/cd player... The cd player skips a lot and is annoying but I just run discs off my discman with a tape adapter. ( i know ghetto but whatever).
During the summer I replaced the old stock 4" ers in the dash with rockford 4"s and the side (door) speakers with I think 51/2 " rockfords ( my 61/2" pioneers wouldnt clear the windows when they went down) I kept the stock headrest speakers....
From stock the setup is much better but can handle very little bass ( good for blairing the ACDC!!!)
anyway, As you can probably see I have wanted to maintain a completely stock appearance so I just replaced with new speakers.
Now, i want to add some subs under the rear compartment and perhaps 2 6x9's facing out towards the cockpit from the rear compartment cover... sounds kinda weird but i think its understandable.
My questions are this:

1. is there any way to put in all this upgraded stuff and somehow maintain my stock head unit??

2. the 6.5" pioneers i mentioned before I had put in my old 88' 929 replacing two blown ones in the rear behind the rear seat.. I simply spliced into the existing wiring and attached. There were only 2 other speakers upfront under the dash and this system seemed much louder than the system in the rx7 know with the upgraded rockford fosgates.... much better bass! where these 6.5 pioneers more bassy than the the 5.5 rockfords i picked up???? I feel like the speakers I put in are awsome for clear crisp high's but have no bass handling capabilities whatsoever..
sooo... any ideas of how i could cram the pioneers into the stock door panel with some sort of spacer of something so I can clear my window's..

sorry for the long post, hopefully someone will help me out.

Get an amp(s) with speaker level inputs and use that to drive any additional speakers. Most amplifiers have them.

I would ditch the stock headunit before adding subs though. How are you going to control them? A decent aftermarket stereo will give you better control (get 6 channel outputs) and a little more power for those upgraded speakers you've installed.

ok... i'm an idiot

but i want to keep my stock head unit.... the side rockford's ive installed already get distorted with the bass/treble at neutral..
i thought i had read a post about someone getting adapters to run amps and subs off of his stock head unit?? maybe not.
i dont care about the price of a new head unit, i just dont want one if possible, i think they make the car look choppy...
sooo. from what your saying I can keep the upgraded(stock location) speakers running off of the head unit as they are now and then run any additional speakers off of an amp??? how do the two connect, do i run the amp into the stock head unit or what? if this is the case could I not run a sub or two off of amps and run that into the stock head unit...
sorry i really dont know my car audio as you can probably tell, im just looking for clear answers on how exactly to do what I want to do.
thanks

You can run amps off the stock head unit through speaker level inputs on the amp or the have a speaker wire to RCA converter(this is not ideal but would work). You would just do this by branching off or splitting your peaker wires so you would so the speakers you branch off of would not be as loud but still work. I hope this anwsered your question.

It sound like you'll need to enhance your general electronics knowedge in order to do this.

You should probably buy a book on this stuff. Search Amazon for "automobile sound systems" or something similar.

Here's a link to get you started:
