Question likes and dislikes of the garret T66

hi I'm thinking of buying a 7 with a T66 turbo already
installed. but I don't know the highs and lows of this
setup...full boost response, hp capabilities, and so on.
so if you can please fill my mind with useful information
I'd appreciate it. THANKS. PS I’m sure you've discussed this but please reiterate for me.

it depends on what options the t66 has. the ideal t66 setup is the dual ball-bearing/big shaft chra with q-trim. . . at least thats what im wanting to do one day. haha. the hp capabilities are very promising. . . boost response depends on whether its dbb or not. just do some searches and youll find it.

The garrett 66 turbo is probably the best street non ball bearing turbo available. There are several cars in Australia running big numbers on them. One is a 1st gen RX7 running low 10s @ 140mph+!

The 1.32 housing is the pick of the bunch for top end stomp. Boost should be on song by 4000rpm and hang on! The 1.15 housing is the pick for a compromise between top end stomp and low down response.

Good luck!

I got a Bit of a question.

Comparing the T66 to the T51 Kia, i've seen they both produce simalar numbers but i had a T66 and it was not the responcive Turbo when driven on the road (seemed hard to be slower to spool during gear changes), would the Kia being newer be a better choice?

I supose having said that the Kia is about twice the Price of a T66 but i'm intrested to here your thoughts?

Cheers

Chris

Dale we will have to compare the turbo response between the Turbontics T66 and the Garrett T66 when you head up for Jamboree this year ........ Keen to see the differance as the price of the Garrett is less than half that of the Turbonetics

Paul I think your talking about the Turbonetics T66 .......

Hmm, yeah I am curious to, I am about to have my compressor wheel changed to a t-66 wheel on my 60-1 to4e turbo, I am sticking with the 1.15 divided turbine for now, the motor is a full bridgeported s4, so I may jump up to the 1.32 should backpressure become a problem, it was either do the wheel upgrade for 400$ or buy a t-66 so I chose the wheel upgrade..Max

No i was Intrested in the Difrence between the T51 and T66 in driving (through the Gears) Responce.

I own a T66 at the moment that is a good Turbo but for the Power i'm producing lower Hp cars are keeping with me down country lanes, when i go out in those cars the responce (gear change between 0 and full boost) seems alot less.

The thing is i'm not talking about a stock car V's a 500bhp T66 monster, i'm talking about my Mates 380bhp T04E FD. Although i wast it in a line my Turbo is too slow to keep the Boost up when i'm changing gear alot.

I was thinking of fitting a Smaller Turbine Housing but its a 1.15 now.

so i was thinking of geting somthing with less internal weight (maybe a T51) will get me on Boost quicker?.

This is why i asked. I just want to know if a T04 with a 94mm comp whel in a T66 housing will be better than the T66?

Grizzly, you are assuming a T51 is smaller than a T66 (turbonetics) ? by the number series ?

this is not the case.

The T51 I have is VERY much larger, infact it has a bigger exhaust wheel than a T88-34D (Greddy) and a compressor around the size of a T72/T76 (turbonetics turbo)

It will be harder to spool than your current turbo. Do you use a "good" equal length divided manifold on your T66 with 1.15 rear housing ? also what trim rear wheel do you have ?

Urm i mean there Responce is Better (quicker) so they get there Power alot sooner than me. (guess i got less and more the wrong way around)

Rice, I would not lay my life on it but i think my hot side wheel trim is Q trim, (i've had the Turbo for a while and thats more an Educated guess).

I have a Full devided Exhaust Manifold that i had made for a T04R, the runners are both Roughly 11" long.

The engine is a 13b-re with a large Extended port and i'm running 20 psi of boost.

So should i expect better Responce or is it a case of the boost i'm running takes a while to get up there?

Thanks.

P.S. Its a Garrett T66 from the Manufactures.

Do you have any specs etc i can read up on?

You are right i was origanaly told (by a guy here in the UK) that the T51 was smaller than the T66, basicly the T51 was a T04 Hot side, T66 comp housing with a 94mm comp wheel fitted.

I have done a bit of reading myself and have completely confused myself? lol

Grizzly ............ give us some kind of idea where your car is making boost as this will help people better understand weather it's a tuning or setup issue ect ??? Also there is a huge difference between the Q and P trims in the Turbonetics exhaust wheels. Also some detail about your setup would be help full ......... is the motor ported on the intake and exhaust ect ect

For sure yogi,

my turbo has the P trim in a 1.32 rear with inconal wheel, im pretty sure the compressor wheel is a turbonetics wheel, i will ask tomorrow when i pick the turbo up, but the CHRA and stuff is all garrett,
the thrust bearing is no longer standard garrett item as the garrett one was fu(ked from using royle purple oil as it couldnt stand the heat....

Max, (or anyone else), What's the difference between upgrading your wheel to a T66 and just buying a T66 straight out, other than cost? I currently have the same turbo (.70/1.15) on a 13B-RE that has a half BP on it. I'm looking to move up to something that will be able to keep up with the motor.

Thanks guys.

the difference is it cost me $600au for the new wheel machine cover, new thrust washer, new bushes, new turbo is $2100 for a garrett plan bearing and for a turbonetics roller turbo would be up about $3500

Cant you simpley just measure your exhuast wheel to know what trim the beast is? I know my P trim wheel is 68mm, isn't a Q trim 72 or 74mm?

it appears that there are a few people having times as exciting as i am with a major project 99.9% complete

my lovely crafted exhuast manifoldm, designed and built after some RICE inspiration and hours of research, my lengths including flanges are 355mm for one and 345mm for the other, pretty good i say for a 1st attempt
