It was requested that I post our wanted specs for a server in here. So here goes. I'm not going to post exact part numbers, if you want these (you know who you are), just ask and I will. But this is what we want for our new server.

- Dual processor board - either the Tyan dual Athlon with onboard SCSI, or a Serverworks dual SCSI board
- If Athlon, either dual 1ghz or dual 1.2ghz Athlon MP's. If Serverworks, then at least dual 866 P3's.
- At least 1 gig of ECC RAM - with the Tyan board it must be DDR RAM, with the Serverworks is has to be PC133 SDRAM
- Minimum of 2, 9 GB 10,000 RPM SCSI hard drives - ideal would be 4 or 5, 18 GB drives. If 4 drives then 3 in a RAID 5 array and one for a boot/logging disc. If 5, then 4 in a RAID 0+1 array and one for a boot/logging disc. This means that we would also need a RAID controller. Something like the Mylex Acceleraid with 32 or 64 meg of onboard RAM. If we can only swing 2 hard drives, then we won't need a RAID card, we'll just mirror them with the OS. Obviously the RAID is a far superior solution.
- It probably needs to be in a rack-mount case with hot-swap hard drive carriers. If we're going to mount it in our current provider, it has to be rack-mount. But we're considering getting a T1 at my house, in which case it could be in any case. The Athlon also requires a hard to find proprietary power supply, which is kinda a pain in the booty.
- At least 1 100mb/sec ethernet card, preferably 2. The Tyan board above has 2 3Com NIC's built in, the Serverworks stuff usually has 1 built in.
- All server boards will have built in video, no need for sound

I think that's it. So to you who requested this, I hope you have some of this stuff available to donate. Feel free to post here or call me at (314) 780-2792. Or e-mail where you e-mailed me to begin with.
