Motorsport Dynamics of Sacramento Garage Sale and Barbeque~!

This weekend on saturday 7/15/06 our local import shop is having a garage sale with some of the surrounding shops along with an open barbeque for anyone who is interested in attending.

They're offering tons of stuff for under their cost just to blow out overstock from some 10 years of collecting. As far as mazda goods, they have things such as tension rods, coilovers, etc. Also have back issues of import mags for $1 a piece. Aerodynamics, CF hoods, pretty much anything, they're blowing it out for cheap (best motoring DVDs too).

It's a chance to have a larger scale meet and barbeque in a safe and legal environment! If anyone in California is free this saturday and wants to hang out, go ahead and come down and have a good time. Here's a bit of info about them and some pics of their shop.

"Founded in 1989, Motorsport Dynamics is a full service automotive performance tuner. For over a decade we have been providing automotive enthusiasts the highest quality products and service possible for import and domestic vehicles. In thirteen years we have grown from a 1600 square foot accessories shop operated solely by the owners to a 7000 square foot facility with three service bays, a chassis dynomomter and nine employees." www.motdyn.com

eh... basically i spent a bunch of time installing an engine, it went to them for tuning, they couldn't figure out why it was hitting a wall at 5K RPMs so they blamed the motor(the motor was fine, 1k mile rebuilt), they also broke 2 studs on his axles while putting the wheels back on and they charged him $250 for tuning when they did nothing, maybe their wideband was faulty but in my view that is still their fault for not noticing the car running extremely lean.

the reason i told him to go to them was that i didn't have a dyno or a wideband and this car was shooting for 400 to the wheels. well after the "tuning session" he brought me the car and i found and fixed a few small vacuum leaks that would have been easy to spot if they had looked(filter to the boost sensor blew apart), then we took the car out for a drive while i was monitoring fuel pressure and it hit the wall at 5k again, fuel pressure was fine but this time it coasted to a dead stop - dreaded sign of death - started it up and sounded like a lawnmower. brought the car back to his house and i looked at the SAFC maps and they were even leaner than when i had set it up the first time so the engine died of lean detonation. the owner also told me the AFR he was seeing on the machine as he was "tuning" the car was in the 16-17range.

i lost about 20+ hours in labor working on his car getting it setup and his car is still down due to the blown motor(this was over a year ago). i wasn't there to oversee the tuning but everything i saw and heard lead me to believe it was tuner error and lack of rotary experience. if you don't know specifics about a car you shouldn't be under the hood "tuning" it.

that is just my experience with them and my grudge(most of the time i spent on the car was out of generosity and to see what the final product would do, so that is lost time to me) but it doesn't mean everyone has to share my view of them, there isn't many import performance supply shops around but i will never recommend them for tuning nor will i give them my business.

Anyways did you remember who did the tuning Karack...?
Bottom line, I will NOT let anybody tune my RX7 except for Steve Kan, and other reputable tuners around...

i believe it was the owner of the shop, supposedly he has/had an FC also but after all of this it makes me wonder if he did the work on that car himself.. this was before i had heard much of Steven Kan, Brian Cain or Chris Greene and MSD is one of the few shops that has a dyno in this area.

I'm sure it was still tuning error and I dont mean to put down the car or owner, but 400whp and SAFC doesnt sound like a good combination in the first place

yea, which is why i now told him to save his pennies for a more reliable setup but really.... it should have at least made some power before it popped not a lean detonation at 5psi at 5k RPMs and then death - that is a severe tuning/technical error which should have been seen with a wideband and i know the timing was correct . had a Greddy front mount kit, BNR stage 4 hybrid, Rtek 1.7 with (4) 720cc injectors and a 'large' streetport and he was running premium so i know the fuel and intake charge setup was fine. (yes i know the 720's wouldn't be able to support that kind of HP but 400 was a high guesstimate and is relative to boost levels)

The tech who owns the FCs is Ray and he isn't the tuner. You're thinking of Henry here and yes he is a co-owner. I'm not sure what happend back then with the tuning as I wasn't here, but saying Henry is inexperienced with rotaries would be rather inappropriate. He's built many many FDs and FCs from the ground up for customers, the most recent being Calvin Wan's FD which he's been competing in Formula D with.

Like any shop you will find, regardless if the results are positive from a tuning session, time was still spent. I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out but if the engine isn't healthy before we start tuning we can't gurantee anything which was set out with the customer on his dyno contract.

But the post wasn't to inform the rx7 community of our tuning services. I've been a rx7 owner and enthusiast since my first car and I just happend to recently start working here and wanted to let others know that they were blowing stuff out from backstock for cheap. As far as whats left I believe we have a genuine Knights Sports FD front bumper.

i didn't really plan on telling the story but it seemed people were interested in hearing it.

i don't know the whole deal but i do know whoever was tuning that day didn't spot obvious problems and before quitting on the car blamed the engine, i compression tested the engine after he brought the car back and it was perfectly healthy.
