only legal modification is before the AFM, so basically a cone filter is about all you can legally do. You could get creative with a radiator shroud that could 'coincidentally' setup a heat shield for the air filter, but you'd have a fun time getting protested about it for a while.

Thanks for the response but don't leave me hanging like that. Sounds like you have seen this heat shield applications, would you happen to have any pictures?

The changes I want to make are after the AFM, I was hoping that tubing for cone filters was available from a supplier, similar to the later RX7 and CRX's.

Jorge,

No, I've not seen these applications, and if I had, I'd protest, just to see the creative excuses used for adding them. I personally don't think you can claim they are legal, but I have read of people who have done this, and defended their use of it as radiator ducting/shrouding. But you better be prepared to argue your position, and defend it, rule and verse, or don't bother. That means, you need the rules book if you don't have it, and you need to understand how IT rules work (if it doesn't say you can, then you can't)

As for cone filters, HKS has an adapter for adding a cone filter to the AFM, 20 bucks or so. K2RD had that for sale a while back, dunno if they still sell it. I found mine on a junkyard RX-7 that I bought from there for 5 bucks. 40$ K&N filter, and awaaaay I go.

You also have to find a way to mount the AFM solidly, once you remove the air filter box, the AFM is loose, and you have to find a way to mount it. I used some bent aluminum strip and a welded bracket to hold it on.

Click the image to open in full size.

The 89-91 AFM can mount a cone intake directly on it, but you'd have to swap to an 89 electronics setup and that's more trouble than it's worth. But if you already have the 89-91 setup, this should be fairly simple.

Paul,

I did not mean to upset you. I park with 4 other RX7 racers and we are always under each others hoods. If I did something illegal I would get my *** beat first and then the formal protest would be filed.
I was just intrigued about what it looked like.

Thanks for the response

Upset me? WHere'd you get the idea you upset me?

Well, I reread my post, I guess it came out stronger than I intended. Basically, what I meant was, this is a big old grey area, and if you want to try and do something like this, you need to be sure you're on legal grounds (at least in your mind) before you do so.. The last thing you can do is say "well, John had that setup on his car", or I found a picture of an IT car with a similar setup, and he said it was legal.. That's all.

But if it were me, and I felt the need for some extra oomph there, I'd build aluminum ducting leading from the bumper inlet to out past the edge of the radiator to see if I could block in the intake.
