Purchasing a 1992 FD from Japan

Hello All,

I'm new here and currently I have a company working at the auctions in Japan to get me an rx7. I live in Germany, but will be moving back to the states in 2018, so getting a RHD rx7 was something I wanted to do. I can only get a 1992 cause I leave early in 2018, so 93 is out of the equation

My biggest question is why the large power gap between

1992 236hp
1993 255 hp
1995 276hp.

More boost?

Thanks for your help

why not just get a lhd 93 in america? its certainly cheaper, and it fixes your problem.

I live in Germany and you can get a FD at Japan auction for 7k shipped to germany. American sellers ask too much, then its more expensive to ship here. Plus RHD > LHD

My opinion...I've driven RHD vehicles before. Maybe because I'm a left handed person, I found it nice to shift with my left hand and steer with my right.

But after reading a few other sites it seems to be no differences, 1991-1992 FD rx7's from japan say 236hp, but the numbers were revised to 255 in 1993 cause japan underrated them.

1996 and up FDs went to 276 in Japan

BTW early 90's FDs sell for under $5K with less than 70K miles in Japan. Cheapest I've seen in the states is 12k for a super high mileage over 100k.

I'd think different exhaust and more boost was the increase.

No idea on a 92 model. All the FDs that were imported into North American (LHD) were titled as 93s even though many were produced in early 92. Only a few 95 came over...but not sure when those were actually manufactured, probably in 94.
IIRC MAZDA advertised slightly better hp figures for the later models mostly due to more efficient turbos and an intake track that flowed a little better. AFAIK, they did not increase boost per se. The exhaust may have flowed slightly better without the silly stock pre-cat the North American models came with to satisfy cold-start emissions.
That stock power advantage of the overseas RHD models has been off-set somewhat over the years as we here in North American tweaked ours, removing restrictive exhausts and with such things as later model parts (later turbos and efini 'Y' pipes) and of course better flowing and more efficient SMICs etc. Point is, if you're buying RHD because you think it will have better power, I doubt it. And there's typically a reason those JDM imports are cheap. I understand personal tastes but personally I think RHD in North America is silly too.

From what I've seen, the Japanese concept of "routine maintenance" isn't exactly the same as mine. And 70k miles in Japan is probably the equivalent of 100k here. It's likely never seen a garage, but seen a lot of salt air and sun. Plus you're buying a car you will commit to before having seen it in person or having heard it run. Once in Germany and the States, you will then have a RHD car that will be awkward when pulling up to a toll booth, fast-food drive-thru, pay-parking lot etc. And when you want to re-sell it...and you will, it's appeal will be to a smaller market.
