GA First Project Car

I'm looking to buy my first project car, ever, at the ripe age of 21.

I know just enough about cars to get me through an oil change. I know next to nothing about them. I've been hanging out with a group of car guys since high school, and now that I have the monetary means of getting into cars, I want to join them.

For my first project car, I want to get an RX7 FC. My question is, for someone of my skill level, is a rotary motor something I really want to get into? From what I understand, most of my friends see it as learning to work on motors all over again, but considering where I stand is that really a big deal? Are they as high maintenance as people let on?

Otherwise, what models should I be looking for if I choose to go down this path? Whats a good price-point for project condition FC?

If you are good with a wrench and can fix a 25 year old car then Yes it would be "fun" to get into.
This isn't a car you just get into and drive.Something small can go bad, real fast if you do not take care of it.
If you want to drive with your buddies, each and every night then NO..as the car needs to be maintained to "tip top shape" and stay there or else it won't be as "fun" as you thought it would be.

I do it as a hobby and since I am "retired" I need to do something to keep me from going nuts..lol.
You on the other hand, being younger may want to consider whether you want to dump funds into a "lawn ornament slash Finicky vehicle".
It can be spent on a Vtec or a Cavy...NO offense to the piston engine..It may be sacraligious here but it's been on the road longer than a wankel has been.
If your finances are slim then you may want to just do that,..or Get the RX7 and have a Reliable car on the side,as you will need it in the long run to fetch parts and go to the freakin liqour store when you get frustrated.....(sorry..personal touch of advice there...hahha!)

Don't get me wrong,I'm not putting the Rx7 Down.
I am trying to point out that it is a car that needs attention and upkeep.
If your hope to do it cheaply then again, you'll suffer the wrath of the car.
