See those 4 holes on the sides? (2 per side) well, you need to go to Auto Zone or Walmart or something and buy the tools to remove them. They come in pairs, they look like metal "U"s. they have a little notch or bar in the end. What you do, is take the tools (they come in pairs) and stick 'em in the holes on the sides. Then you pull them away from eachother (to get the barbs to catch). Now all you do is pull the head unit straight out. That's it!

zro- is right. You need to remove the small plastic covers on each side of the radio. Then you need the tools, you can buy them from www.crutchfield.com for $2. You can also make your own out of a wire hanger and tin snips (but they don't work as good without the notches cut into the sides). All you do is insert the tools into the holes, until the notches click. Then you have to pull very very hard (the stereo is backstrapped with a bolt into a rubber cylinder). Be very careful when you remove it, you have to pull extremely hard, but don't damage the wire harness. When the stereo gives, stop pulling so hard. Good luck.

Should be Ford keys that go in the holes and then it comes right out.

I'm actually running into the same problem, though my radio is an Alpine that the previous owner had in there, and snipped all the wires behind it.

Thing is, it has an equalizer that's under it, which I removed by pulling it out, so I can access the back of the Alpine, though cramped. I'm able to reach my hand behind it and pull against it, but it doesn't want to budge.

Do alpines use this same tool or are they screwed into the console somehow? There is a plastic piece surrounding the headunit, but I'm pretty certain it is part of the radio, and not a bezel which would be removable. Any help would be appreciated, if it helps the radio is a Alpine CDE-7822 which refuses to come out!

Oh and one other thing: I unscrewed the center console to allow the plastic piece on the front of the console (which surrounds the radio, and *****) to move. Three corners unclipped (lower left, lower right, upper right), but the upper left didn't want to release, and I don't want to snap the plastic by forcing it to give up. Are there screws inside the mid dash air diffuser which keeps the piece of plastic in place? Or can I slide a tool behind it, give it a little pressure and expect it to pop out so I can get better access to the radio? Thanks again.

Got it, thanks
Turns out after removing the face, on the inside on each side is a small disc, which I pryed up it released it. Thanks a lot for the help, didn't rip the plastic off the radio in a frustrated rage like I was willing to do

On The Back !? That's more of a guide to make sure it sits / gets supported at the back. so that it's not only supported on the front, and that the CD Player doesn't cause strain if it rests on it...

Did a search and found this, the problem is a got the radio to come out to about 2 inches then thats it. It feels like thre is something holding it from the back, have any body run in to this? I know there is the wiring but I pulled very hard and dont want to break anything......by the way my car is a base model with just the cassette player. Thanks
