Because the 400 fits without ANY modification, and the XL would need both leg bolsters trimmed along the sides and the outer wing that wraps around the head hits the door frame so that would need to be trimmed too. But as far as I remember the shoulder bolsters didn't touch at all.
And after sitting in the 400 again, it's not really all that tight. I'm not sure yet how it will feel on a long trip, but just sitting in it isn't bad. I don't have it in the car yet. I need to get someone to make some steel strips to bolt to the floor pan and then I can bolt the Sparco sides I have to that and then to the seat. Even with that, I still think it will be a PITA to actually bolt it into the car. But I haven't tried yet.

Ah, so nothing fatal, like the halos poking out of the window, or the base of the seat being too wide for the floor pan.
I think I might just get a Sparco Sprint L (large version) which should just barely fit. If I relocate the hatch/gas door lever it should fit easily since I'm not going to use the tranny tunnel trim.

The front factory mount holes aren't in line with the rest of the seat. Go look at the factory mounts and you'll see that the front 2 holes are lower and at a different angle. So at the minimum you'd need a base to mount to the factory holes and then you'd mount the seat to.

The Sparco r505 will fit in my SE, gotta make a bracket, but that's not so terrible. I traced the sparco bracket for the Boxter they came from, just gotta add the bits for the 7 onto it.
It would be easier to mount to the factory rails, but that adds some height and I already hit the liner in the stock seat.

Just to update the list....
Will fit
1. Stock FD Seats (does this really need to be on the list?)
2. Recaros from the Spirt R
3. Gias Lowmax
4. Bride Zeta III
5. Bride Vios III lowmax
6. Mazdaspeed Type-F
7. Memoryfab s58
8. Corbeau - some models, they supply the custom racks.
9. Sparco Sprint V
10. Recaro Profi and or SPG ( with slight rubbing to the door but not much, if you use Recaro rails instead of bride it will fit fine)
11. Sparco Roadster
12. Sparco EVO with stock seat rail (shoulder bolster will rub on the door)
13. Sparco Milanos
14. Memory FAB S58
15. Tillett B6F XL 47 (which is the largest Tillett seat, meaning that they should all fit. Has a 30 degree layback angle, which is a little too much IMO. It will fit basically to the floor with the right rails. Probably the best option for REALLY big guys with long arms and short legs. Heavy and expensive, though.).
Will fit with modifications
1. Corbeau FX1 - fits with seat modification. Corbeau FX1 Install in FD
2. Sparco Evo 2 - - fits with seat modification.
3. Rx-8 seats (can be made to fit by modifying the racks)
4.Cobra Imola (with some minor triming of door side shoulder wing)
5. Sparco Torino 2 (modify the stock rails and get rid of the seat belt buckle they fit (barely))
6. Japanese knockoff of Sparco Pro Drive (shoulders hit the door and leg bolsters will probably rub on the console trim).
Will NOT fit
1. Sparco Fighter
Pending pics
1. Sparco Torino (RecKleSs)
There are several seats listed for which their owners have not updated the list.
Momo Start, OMP WRC, OMP HTE-R XL (mod needed?), OMP HTE-R 400, Cobra Suzuka GT, Ultra Shield SM seat (some sizes), Ultra Shield Rally Sport (some sizes) are some of these, I think.

Regarding the above list, I don't think you can install the Sparco EVOs with the stock rails. The EVOs use a side mount rail.
I have the Sparco EVOs installed in my car and love them. Very comfortable (I have a 32 inch waist and am 175 lbs. at 6 feet tall). I used the Bride LowMax rails for the install and did a bit of custom trimming of the seat bolsters, particularly the upper outside bolsters and then the left passenger inside bottom bolster. Those are the problem areas. See the following for pics:
https://www.rx7club.com/interior-ext.../#post11269278
I also trimmed/notched the bottom back of each bucket to get the seats to sit lower so now they are pretty much sitting on the floor in the back. I like a lot of angle in the seat but you could also adjust the front down if desired.
Still, for track events, I take out the bottom seat cushion so I can sit in a great position. With the seat cushion in place, my helmet clears but not by much (with the OEM seats, I couldn't fit at all). So, taking the cushion out provides good clearance. I am going to get a thin pad made up for track days so I don't sit directly on the seat bottom but it really hasn't bothered me all that much.
If anyone has questions, pm me. It's not that difficult of a task and you will like the results. Get that dremel out and go to town!

Got the seats installed in the new car. Using atomic Rex mounts that were cut down to fit the seats better and a cross bar added with the sub strap mounts. My drivers seat is a 15". I previously used a 16" and I think you could squeeze in a 17" with possible minor modification. When I had the 16" it cleared the door panel and trans tunnel. You have to mount them tight to the trans tunnel like any seat in order to stay centered with the steering wheel.
Stock seat
Seat modification to fit the rails. May not be necessary if you paired Kirkey rails with different bottom mount.
Seat back brace modification
Drivers side seat mount. The bottom pan will basically sit right down on those back bolts on the floor mount. You can see the cross bar for 6-point sub straps. The bottom mounts use the factory holes.
Driver's seat mounted. I had the seats powder coated black.
Passenger seat mounts. You can see the fire extinguisher mount at the front.
Passenger seat, harnesses, and fire extinguisher mounted.
Close up if the seat back brace.

Less than 10 cm?
And are the shoulders the same width?

There's no way they wouldn't fit. They're super-duper overpriced, though. Buy a Tillett.
I wouldn't pay $2000 to anyone who can't spell "were" correctly.

Looked at the Techocraft website.
Warning signs all over to me. That site is made to take money from dumb rich kids.
I did a quick Google search and yes, Technocraft seats are a knock off of Tillet race seats for the same damn price, but more hype. They actually used to sell Tillet seats before their contract was cancelled and they decided to copy the Tillets.
Tillet offers more styles, sizes and yes FIA certification.
You know, so you can race in your race seats in production car classes...
Technocraft Josh said they were in the process of FIA certification in 2011. Looks like they didn't pass then?

I would buy another Tillett in a second if they'd just make one with a 20 degree layback. 30 degrees is just too far back for Japanese cars unless you've super short legs or ultra long arms. As low as you can sit in a Tillett, there's no need for so much layback.
Turns out that you can't use aluminum seats without a seat back brace... guess I'm gonna have to spend three times as much an order an FRP seat from the UK. Or get a Sparco Sprint L (by far the most economical option) and pray to the FSM that it actually fits and that I can actually get it mounted low enough.

Valkyrie are you trying to meet a certain groups safety standards? Need to meet FIA?
From carpet to sub holes is 2.5" so about 6.4cm. Could be less too depending on how you mount the front of the seat (mine uses a higer front mount hole).
Shoulders on the 15" seat are 22" with the cover on. 16" seat is 22.5"

Wow, that is nice and low...
No, I don't need to meet any regs, but both Ultra Shield and Kirkey told me directly that seat back braces are required for aluminum seats.
I suppose I could just make a brace that bolts to the hatch floor...

going to the hatch might be a little far to be able to make the brace sturdy.
Are you going to run a roll bar at all? That's the most common place to make the brace to. Also the best way to run harnesses in the cars as using the rear strut bar puts the harness tie points further than most manufacturers suggest (8" or less from H&N to harness bar is Schroth recommendation). It can be done back there, but isn't ideal. Or were you going to run with the stock 3-points and just looking for fixed back seats to hold you in better?

At some point I will probably have to run a cage because of the rules of the track days I do (based on the lap times the car will probably do when it's ready).
But doing so will make the car hard to drive because bolt-in cages are super in the way of the gas pedal in RHD cars, and I don't even want to know how much a custom welded cage is here... probably more than the car is worth. I'm not sure if they're even street legal. If I was going to do a welded cage, I'd also have to get flat door panels and possibly remove the ceiling trim (also might not be street legal), because I want the cage as far away from my head and legs as possible.
The other problem is that Japanese bolt-in cages don't come with harness bars, so I'd have to have one fabricated...
Kirkey says any brace has to be horizontal and bolted near the shoulders, so bracing it to the hatch is not going to work.

Just got my Sparco Sprint L.
It just barely fits in the floor pan (right side)... the shoulders definitely interfere with the door. I'm probably going to cut the door panel so the door can close more easily. Or just pull it, since I won't be street legal with this seat anyway.
The way the seat bottom is made out of a very soft pad and some nylon belts means that it's probably the best choice for getting the maximum headroom (while still using a seat pad). You're actually sitting slightly below the bottom of the seat because of the way the seat is made.
The shoulder holes are the exact right height for me (5'11") and the seat bottom fits my fat *** nicely. I can finally use the lap belt holes.
I'm gonna have to use the bottom mounts since there's no room to use side mounts.

I did some test fitting with the OMP HTE-R 400 today, and the super low seat rails I got from Adam Griffith that bolt the seat directly to the floor. Adam said he'd modify the rails for me to work with these seats. The seat has to be to the right a bit, against the tranny tunnel, otherwise the door is still somewhat difficult to close against the shoulder bolster. The rail kept the seat from leaning down too much, so it's leaned back quite a bit. The upside is it gives even more headroom with a helmet, I don't have to take the bottom cushion out. But I'd still rather not have it lean back that far.
Obviously I had to take this pic outside the car because the *** was back too far to see with it inside the car, and I only took this pic so I could draw on it lol.
