Find someone who is knowledgeable enough to work on your car, i hate to say this, but it seems you lack the skills to do it yourself, so its best to avoid the long list of things you need to learn at the moment and pass it on to a pro and get a good working car straight up.

Dont take it the wrong way, i've seen your situation enough times to know that it would be to hard a task for you to undertake.

Im not trying to brag or anything but i am a professional, i have my own shop, Motion Motor Sports.
ive installed many standalone ecus and as far ans electronics, well thats my experty
i build, sell and install, the megasquirt. repair computers and electronics. rebuild car harness and custommade ones for the dreaded fc and older cars. all i asked was if any body has the software because the one i downloaded does not display right, and i wanted to know if maybe the software was bad or i just need a different operating system,xp me 98 etc... also i have a new laptop and does not have the r232 so im using a usb to serial and it acts like port 4 as for the haltech has the option of 1 or 2 but not 4. i just never done haltech tunning just install and customers take it to get dynoed and do the tunning there.

I dont take it the wrong way, i understand it may sound like a dumb question, but its really not if u consider i have never done the tunnig on the haltech just the installs.

My friend, i apologize for my remarks then, i didnt know who you were and your initial post sounded like you hardly knew about windows enough led alone EMS installation. Sorry i took it that way.

If this is the case, let me tell you that i have a brand spanking new laptop, with WinXP Pro, no serial port and i cater to pretty much any EMS out there and my system does work. I have 2 USB serial addapters, keyspan and a prolific, and they both work perfectly. Initially i had a problem with them because my laptop needed OS updates from Microsoft.com, after that it works like a dream. I also use the OpenECU stuff for EVO's and WRX's, as well as OBD2 software for diagnostics.

So, now that we've established a baseline, lets move onto the problem. Doesnt your Serial adapter have an option (advanced tab or button) to set the desired comm port to what ever you like? i've set the two cables i use the most as comm1 and comm2 and every time i connect them they are automatically set as their corresponding port.

What brand is it? There are a few of them that sometimes work and sometimes dont, i know for a fact that the Keyspan always works, and i always recommend it because of that. Also the PCMCI adapters work very well too, but are a little pricier than the regular USB ones.

Let me know if you need help with the Haltech setup. Ive been working with them for 6+ years, so i know my way around them pretty good, specially the older DOS systems. Which i also run on my brand spanking new laptop using Virtual PC.

well its a radioshack brand, actually i that was my first try, to set up the adaptor to change the com to 1 or 2 but it has no such settings under device manager or anywhere, it might be the adaptor. but what about the weird characters on the software?

Ok ok ok ok, hold it hold it... You're using windows XP? if you are, even if you have the serial adapter XP doesnt communicate with DOS software, and the funny characters on your screen are from lack of graphical support in what ever DOS is left in XP and your bios. There are tons of posts around here and on the other haltech forums going on and on about these problems. This is what you HAVE TO DO, download Virtual PC 2007 from the Microsoft website and install it, then install either a DOS virtual drive or win95/98/me onto it. I prefer DOS, then you will be able to use your serial adapter and there wont be any funny characters on your screen and all will be well.

There's also DOSBox, but i found it kinda weird to use, and VPC work perfectly for me.

So, read this thread..... http://www.oz951.com/halforum/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=28

Yes, all that i said before, XP and DOS dont talk to each other, unless you use DOSBox or Virtual PC. Period.

Unless you have one of the first E6K's that were ever made and it might need older firmware, but i dont think that is the case.

Got any pics of it? email them to me. Also, if you can try and go online with that S and tell me what firmware and system version is in it, its on the loading screen when you first go online with it.
