NPR intercooler in an FD

I was wondering if anyone has installed the intercooler off of the newer Isuzu NPRs in an FD? I have heard talk about it in FC but nothing for the FDs. From a economical stand point it looks like a very cost effective intercooler.

My second question is if anyone might know where I can get one of these other than e-bay?

Thanks

I'll be selling mine for $ 300.00 soon. It works well with the stock or low/medium flow turbos. Excellent temperature drop.

hehe, I got first dibs guys J/K sorta.

You can check out pics on E-bay right now. Just do a search for npr. I think there are 2 of them on there right now. One is the smaller (newer) intercooler. The other is off of an older truck.

i have a large one fit in. and i can get them on a regular basis. most of the time.
vtecthis-
to answer your question. because they work fine, and even with the "used" market value, you can still save money. so far between a friend and myself we have sucessfully used them in
2 fd's
an rx3
an rx2
a TII
and in an FD motored convertable...
let me dig up a pic...

I have one on my car. Its sweet. I don't have a digital camera so I've been dicking around waiting to post a write up about it.

As for cost effective I have $600 wrapped up in mine. Not too bad for a nice looking front mount.

Search under my screen name and you'll find some pics of mine. I'll try to get some more soon

Looks great though............I know there is a few guys running NPR's on FC's but haven't seen any photos under the hood.......

BTW: I have a perfect NPR up forsale if anyone is looking...Its clean too......medium NPR 290.00

pipe is made fro anything lyin around. a piece of that piping is from a turbo 300z and the elbo was cut to clear the pully and the cut of piece was used elsewhere. these are temp pipes until hard piping was able to be done by a friend.

Brad-
it is upsidedown. i stated that in the post ;
i had one in my TII (bfore that goddamn truck rearened me) and it was upright. the only thing was there was some cutting required. this convertable needed to be returned to stock shortly so no cutting was done to anything. hence being placed upsidedown.

Well my friend gets alot of these intercoolers. And he sells them for a very very very good price. He sells the big NPR's with the 3'' inlets for 200 and the smaller ones with the 2 1/2 '' inlets for 150. They are very clean and dont have bent fins. I was told that these are even better then the Greddy front mounts and other name brand front mount intercoolers because if u think about it, these intercoolers where on trucks that are boosting quite a bit and they have to be very very strong. My friend has one of them on his 3rd gen with a 60-1 boosting somwhere around 20 pounds or so and the intercooler holds up fine.

Strong yes, but not designed for high flow. The NPR is a diesel rated at only 175 hp. The small IC is only 2.2" x 8", vs 2.5" x 11" stock. Big one is 2" x 14", a better match for stock or slighly mod'd FD.

The high $$$ fmic's are much better for high flow/power, with less pressure drop.

which one would be better for stock twins. The 3 inch inlets or 2.5 because I have read about loosing boost with FMICs because of the pressure loss.

here are some number comparisons on *other option* IC's

The NPR IC(Med): at 329cfm and 290°F on the inlet side of the IC, the
pressure
drop is 0.09psi. The outlet temp is 130°F, heat rejected is 55553
BTU/hr, and
the calculated heat exchange area is 1404 square inches.

Starion IC : (the bigger one) at 324cfm and 292°F on the inlet side of
the
IC, the pressure drop is 0.29psi. The outlet temp is 139°F, heat
rejected is
52287 BTU/hr, and the calculated heat exchange area is 1217 square
inches.

Saab 9000 IC: at 332cfm and 295°F on the inlet side of the IC, the
pressure
drop is 0.81psi. The outlet temp is 123°F, heat rejected is 60350
BTU/hr, and
the calculated heat exchange area is 1602 square inches.

Volvo IC: at 331cfm and 293°F on the inlet side of the IC, the pressure
drop
is 0.55psi. The outlet temp is 126°F, heat rejected is 58809 BTU/hr,
and the
calculated heat exchange area is 1539 square inches

for those of you who dot believe that this IC is good enough, check out some cars from Puerto Rico that run 7's 8's and 9's with this IC.

Here is a pic of my modified medium NPR when I first got it.

Before I put it in I made new brackets out of stainless, cleaned up the welds with a grinder, and polished the entire thing. I also modified the piping.

Everyone who sees it comments on how good it looks and when I tell them that its from an Isuzu they are like

I think its a great choice. I'm very happy with it, Especially for less that $600.

Also, with my piping it mounts like the Rx7fashion and XS Engineering intercoolers, you don't have to relocate the battery, radiator, or A/C. Its a sweet setup. I highly recommend it. More pics soon
