Up and Running on Series 2

I am almost completely done setting up my AEM Series 2 EMS. The car drives much more smoothly than it did on the PFC. I credit this mainly to closed loop O2 feedback. My Idle is rock solid. There are so many more settings and features than my old PFC had, which is good when you finally get it all sorted out, but it takes lots of time and patience to figure out which one out of the hundreds of settings may be the culprit if things are not working as desired.

With the AEM boost control setup I finally know what boost my car will reach when I floor it. I used to just guess and cringe with my old open loop truboost. I have mine setup to reach and maintain a different boost in each gear, which works great for minimizing wheel spin in the lower gears. After doing a few pulls, I go into the data log and analyze the boost response across the whole RPM range. I found that mine dropped a little in the mid rpm range so I added some wastegate duty in the affected RPM band and now my boost level is right on target and consistent for the entire pull. To buy a boost controller that allows you to do this is going to set you back around $600. That is half the cost of the ECU.

The data logging records every parameter I could possibly need and was very helpful for setting up the initial street tune. I would just go for a short drive, pull over, review the logs, make changes, and keep driving. I also experienced a problem with my car when I would floor it in second then the car would start bucking. I downloaded my log and noticed that AFR's were leaning out at that instant. I then scanned through all parameters at that specific time and noticed fuel pressure was dropping. I guess 512 is the limit of a single Bosch 044 with stock fuel lines. It would have been much harder to find this if the AEM didn't have its internal logging feature and possibly cost me a motor.

I picked up 36 WHP by switching to the AEM EMS and upgrading to the AEM coils. Overall my experience was positive. My goals were met of having a more smooth driving FD, and power goals were exceeded. The install was a lot of work, but I added lots of optional inputs making it more complex. There were a few bumps in getting the software setup, but thanks to the support from Cody at Tripoint I was able to work everything out and make the car drivable enough so I didn't have to trailer it the 273 miles to the dyno. Thanks to John for an awesome tune. It is really hard to get an FD that can both lay down solid power, and drive through city traffic with ease. This setup is really the best of all worlds.

I have attached the before and after dyno graphs.

Glad to hear!
I too went from PFC to AEM (v1) years ago and I will never look back.
AEM does it all and ive messed with adaptronic, wolf, haltech, microtech, tec3, megasquirt, hondata and pfc and I personally like aems most of all. Great 2d and 3d maps and the self tuning features are great.
I will be running a series 2 (6050) on the 20b.

Glad you are happy Adam! BTW, I'm making progress on my traction control setup.

The AEM is really underrated. I also love mine and will never go back. Its amazing all the unit offers at the price point.

Silverfdturbo, good call on the 6050 box. That is the same box Adam and I are running, it has a few improvements over the S1 box. Especially now that the new firmware is out.

A sold daily driveable 500wph setup in an FD is rare these days. It is nice to see one done right.

agent004 and jhnrx7 what options are you guys running? sensors, switches and extra hardware?

My FD is non sequential and has retained A/C and OMP control.

In addition to stock sensors I have added:
Oil Pressure (using engine protection feature)
Fuel Pressure (using engine protection feature)
Oil Temp
Trans Temp
Dual Pre-turbo EGT

OEM fog light switch (triggers Traction control on/off)
CEL wired to LS10 (Triggers light for coolant "Hot")

I am considering adding a 12 position switch for TC sensitivity control once I have everything dialed in.

As for AEMTuner features I have setup the following:
Boost by Gear & Boost by TPS
Knock control to pull timing when sensing knock (tested and working great)
Oil pressure protection (this saved me recently when I did not realize how low my oil level was)
Coolant temp protection (I have a rev limiter set for when the car is too cold and too hot)
O2 lean protection
Fuel Pressure Protection
Traction Control (I have it functioning, but I am still experimenting with the sensitivity settings so it activates correctly)

I am planning on trying out the 3D 3-step maps to test a form of Launch Control or pit limiter

My FD is a large street ported motor with a GT3574 single turbo

In addition to stock sensors I have added:
Oil Pressure (using engine protection feature)
Fuel Pressure (using engine protection feature)
Oil Temp
EGT
AEM UEGO O2 (using O2 feedback and engine protection feature)
AEM Serial Gauge for sensors that don't have a designated gauge
(coolant temp, IAT, EGT, Oil Press, Battery voltage)

I added an extra foglight switch where the blank was between OEM fod and rear defrost.

OEM fog light switch triggers high boost by gear (1st 15psi, 2nd 18psi, 3rd 21psi, 4th & 5th 24.5 psi.
Extra fog light switch (triggers Traction control on/off)
Gear based shift light wired to LS3

As for AEMTuner features I have setup the following:
Boost by Gear
Knock control to pull timing when sensing knock
Oil pressure protection
Coolant temp protection (I have a rev limiter set for when the car is too cold and too hot)
O2 lean protection
Fuel Pressure Protection

I have not setup the traction control yet because I am working on a new wheeel and tire setup.

I aslo just noticed today that with the cold temperatures up here I am not injecting enough fuel when cranking even with this value set to the max 100 ms. Once, I switched to inject all the car starts almost instantly.

I am very happy with the AEM Series 2 as it is leaps and bounds beyond what I had before. I am amazed how quickly I used up so many inputs and outputs; I don't thing a system that offers fewer like the Adaptronic would have met my needs.

I really just wish they would fix the loop logging feature with the next firmware relaese.
