Talking What do you all think about this idea

I live in VA and radar detectors are illegal here , one of the 3 states that doesn't allow them how gay, but anyway i have an idea. I have a 93 FD and it has no passenger side air bag. SO I was thinking of cutting the panel where the air bag would come out of out and makeing a second "concealed" glove compartment for my radar detector what do you all think about this idea.

most radar dectors cannot have obstructions in their way. thats why you have to mount it up on the dash, glass will not block its ability to scan. i may be wrong though, there may be new radar dectors that can be concealed and still work.

Hey man

Where in VA are you?

Also...i dont think you have to go to NEARLY that much effort to conceal your radar detectors...the FD's dash was practically molded to do just that!!

Using the suction cups, mount the radar detector via the windshield on the very left...between the A pillar and where the middle of the dash begins to arc

that little dip makes it virtually impossible to see the radar detector from almost any angle. a cop directly next to you on either side, behind you, and even in front of you can't see it. the only way it can be spotted is if he walks up to your car...

also...make sure you invest in a radar detector that has a v-chip in it (the one that makes it immune to radar detector detectors that VA cops DO use, as far as i know). The Valentine One comes w/ the v-chip standard

Your best bet is to hide it when you see the cop start turning around to come get you.

I thought that VA police had some sort of system to detect if you have a radar detector? That's why I always turned mine off when I was driving through.

I got rid of mine, though, as IMO they just give you a false sense of security

Yes the VA cops do have radar detector detectors (RDD), but most new radar detectors have VGQ-2 cloaking or somthin like that to protect you also they can give you a warning if the cops are using the RDD. My friend has one and it has saved his *** countless times.

RXtacy...fairfax, eh? I'm real close by... vienna/reston here. you should check the NorthEastern section under Regional Forums...we got a meet comin up this saturday. come out...meet some of the guys in the tysons area =)

The concealing thing can be "cool," but like SNRacing said, the better view your RD has, the better it functions. Meaning..if you have it sitting on your seat or concealed in some compartment, it'll prob go off after as you pull onto the shoulder when the cop turns his siren on behind u... lol

the whole point of RDs is they try to pick up the beam BEFORE you're screwed. so maximizing it's visibility - which maximizes it's range - is KEY.

if you still want it concealed, get one of those expenisve units that can be integrated into the front and rear bumpers and has a special stealth readout. you can never spot it =)

johnisenglish...that's what the v-chip I was talking about is for (which RXtacy clarified is called the VGQ-2 chip). On the Valentine One, it'll actually stop it's output if it detects a cop's radar detector detector. so you're straight =)

i saw some website where a guy made special setups for valentine radar detectors that were hidden, and the warning lights and such were in your rear view mirror. pretty neat.

where's THAT website?? gimme gimme!!

that's gotta b some involved work.. cuz the v-1 has TWO antennae/sensors for radar... one in the front, and one in the rear. so he woulda had to make a custom mount for each, and run wiring to connect both to the single direction indicator... crucial

the problem is that if a cop radars you and then you slow down, they will sight you for it whether they can find it or not. then you have to waste time going to court to fight the ticket. they will sit there and wait till they see someone they "think" is speeding and hit them not just constantly run the radar like most states

Get your self a K-40 and be done with it. Dealers have them as an option on high end BMWs, Mercedes, Porsches, Ferraries etc. You get the idea.

Pugg,

5-0 can cite you for a radar detector even if they don't find one on you?! What the?!?! You gotta be kidding me... that's some bull to have to deal w/...

And yea, I noticed on I-95, the cops use the "instant-on" method... they keep the radar off until they see a single car that looks like it's speeding, turn it on, get the reading, and turn it right back off. That way, it minimizes the chances other cars in the area can get a head's up on the cop's location by using radar detectors. That's some dirty stuff...

They also do it at the crest of hills or around bends...turn it on the second a car comes around, and turn it right back off. This is getting to be a real problem I tell ya.

I say we should cut the BS, stop wasting time w/ detectors that work too late, and get an active radar jammer. Only prob is they're real expensive, and because they're active (the passive ones don't work), they actually interfere w/ the cop's radar equipment, which is a violation of FCC rules, so getting caught w/ one lands you in jail (it's a felony).

Fastcarfreak, how do you think ANY of those towns got on the map to begin w/? They were DISCOVERED via someone getting pulled over there haha

I used to go to Penn State, and one day on the way back to philly, I got pulled over in this place called Juniata. I had to drive some 100+ miles back a month or so later to the court date (it was a BAD ticket...92 in a 65 lol), lost, and walked back w/ my tail between my feet.

Price doesn't always equate to better performance. Case in point, K-40 detectors utilize sensors placed in the front and rear (there may be a side-to-side option as well) of your car. There is a central "hidden" unit mounted inside the cabin that will give you all the radar readings. However, last time I checked these systems were going for 800 plus. Which I personally feel is ridiculous given the performance of my V1. Granted I’ve never driven with K-40, but given the reviews I’ve read. Its performance didn’t warrant the price tag. V1 also has the option for a “hidden” central unit in which the only piece visible is a small component that displays the radar bands and bogey locations.

I've been using V1 for about 2 plus years now, and it’s absolutely phenomenal. Its range is seriously miles given the terrain, and I emphasize the S. In optimal conditions (i.e. flat), I've had the V1 going off for literally about 3 minutes while I was traveling at ~70 MPH on a flat highway before I came across the cop (I am not exaggerating). Another example of the radar detectors brilliance occurred this past Monday. I was traveling home again when the V1 picked up a bogey behind me. I look back to see faintly flashing lights of a vehicle I couldn't even make out. I would say it was a good mile away. Anyway, I knew it was a cop given the V1's response. About a minute later a state trooper finally closes in on me and the "wolf pack" that was passing me (I was doing 70) and pulled over one of the cars in the process of passing me.

These are just a few of the recent examples I can site illustrating the V1s superior performance. I wouldn't waste my time with anything less or anything more expensive.

Back to the original question: I think it's a bad idea to cut up your dash. You will regret it later. My 2 cents.
