bar mount intercooler sit on
this pic is a bit old however you get the picture
Just wondering what is the fuction of the formed bar that my intercooler rests on and is it worth reinforcing. Or just clean it up, and away I go?

What formed bar?! I don't see a formed bar that the IC is resting on. And please tell me your not talking about the strut bar.........cause I just can't reply after this if that's what your asking.

um no, the one that the intercooler bolts down to. (under the intercooler). It has 2 bolts showing and a threaded port (albit rusty) showing as well. Just wondering if it performs a rigidity function , or rather is it a mounting bar only?

You need to be more descriptive with your thread titles. "Picture" is the epitome of laziness...
The function of the black brace beneath the intercooler is precisely that... to hold up the intercooler and keep the weight from hanging from the intake piping alone. It also has (or had) a support bracket for the lower radiator hose, and I believe provided one mounting point for the battery tray. It doesn't really need reinforcing, but if you want to clean it up and repaint or powder coat it, knock yourself out.

That bar is just there to mount things off of, it dosen't have any function in terms of stiffening the chassis. If you take it off you'll notice that it weighs about 3lbs and is incredibly flimsey. You're not really going to gain anything by reinforcing it.

jimlab: I to noticed my lack of effort on the title and tried to modify the title but alas I was not able to sorry.
AMRAAM4 your right I have since upgraded the ast to the nice big aluminum one. However in my defence the car only had about 28,000kms or 17500miles on it when that pic was taken the AST was in like-new condition.
Thanks again for all you input. The reason I was asking is because I'll be putting in my new AWR radiator in and might as well clean up the bar.

As mentioned in a previous thread, you can buy 3/16" aluminum channel that would be stiffer than the stock bar and have the same dimensions - plus look better.
Somewhat pointless if your stock one is still present - it doesn't really function as a stiffener - nor do the mounting points really facillitate stiffening.
