Performance Problems - Can you help?

Thanks for reading this post.....if you have any comments, I would greatly appreciate your advice as I cannot figure out what is wrong:

Details: 93 rx 7 touring with 114k

I had a car fire about a year ago. Apparently the fuel lines leaked and caught fire. The car was repaired but shortly afterwards the engine began running extremely poor.

*At idle and while driving, the techtometer will rarely exceed 5k even if the throttle is put to the floor.

* When the engine is cold the car will hardly accelerate and will simply lack any power. It will barely do 40mph. After the car warms up for 5 mins, it runs slightly better but the car won't go above 80mph.

*There is a contast fuel smell, especially if the heater fan is turned on.

*If after running the car for a while, I turn it off, I sometimes have a hard time restarting it. (It will crank, but make take 5-10 times before it starts and usually I need to give it some throttle to restart it and keep the idle up so it doesn't stall). I don't seem to have this problem if the car was off for a while.

*The exhaust smoke is inconsistent and sometimes makes popping sounds. There also appears to be an exhaust leak located under the passenger seat. (You can see the smoke since it relatively cold in the mornings).

*The car seems to use too much gas- only getting about 11-13 mpg as opposed to my usual 17 mpg.

Thanks
Bob

Bob, IMO, the problems you have listed all sound ignition related. That's where I would start looking for problems.

also sounds like you are running extremely rich. The statement you made about long crank times might indicate flooding is occuring. Check your injectors, one might be leaking.
