3rd Gen Longevity

All,

I have been reading a lot about everything RX-7 on here. I get a little nervous with a lot of people talking about burned out motors etc. However I don't really see a lot of info on how people drive their cars. Hard, easy, mix??

I have a 93 touring that I bought new 10+ years ago. I have under 33,000 miles. I would not say I drive the car like grandpa, but I certainly don't strain it by any stretch of the imagination. I change the oil every 3000 however I am mindfull that the car is over 10 years old. Given how I drive the car (never let it sit for more than 3 weeks or so) can I expect a rather problem free car for some time or am I just one drive away from a motor falling out?

youll be fine for a long long time. Theres a couple old ladies that have 3d gens back home where I live and they have no idea of the problems everyone else has on the forums because they drive it like a normal car. One has over 100k miles and daily driven. Its when kids start to modify the car that it becomes unreliable. Also at about 65k miles 93s seem to have a problem with the water seals in the motor cracking and causing the engine to burn coolant. Some engines last much longer than this though and I have a feeling youll be one of them. It cant be all by chance it has to be the level of modification, the maintanance and how hard it is driven that determines when the water seals fail. Id also suggest taking the car to redline every once in a while, not letting it sit for more than a week at a time and changing the oil every 2k miles or 3months.

If you have had your car for 10+ years, you should be the one telling us what your conclusion is. You seem to take care of your car nicely and should not have a problem. Dont be caught off guard when/if the engine does go becuase it could. If you love your car, just save up a little money and have a just incase fund. If the motor goes, you have money to fix it and you will be driving a car that is like new again. Make sure you do all the reliability mods though. Search for them.

Whey you say modifying it makes it worse do you mean power modifications? Say i get a rotary extreme v-mount and a Apex-i PFC with all the nessacary reliabilty mods it wouldn't effect longivity right?

because your average 16 year old kid buys the car for the soul reason of it being fast and then he drives the **** out of it without ever maintaining it, note that I said your average 16 year old.

for the most part, i think a good percentage of drivers here have modified FDs and are lead foots like myself

it all comes down to maintenance, and it sounds like you got that down. personally, i am pleased if my motor lasts more than 100k with my mods and the way i drive. the more heavily modified your FD engine is, the more you have to worry about it blowing up and more maintenance it will require. in your case you should have no problems since its all original.

if you really get paranoid, throw in a koyo radiator

If you maintain it correctly and do some if not all of the reliability mods you'll be fine even if you take it to redline 30 times/day as long as you check the temps and be sure your boost don't go over 10psi.
