79 Exhaust - Second Pipe Beside Muffler
All,
I bought a 79 with a Monza Exhaust. Since I'm more of a purist on these cars and appreciate the smooth feel of the Rotary engine, I want to go back to a quiet muffler. One thing I noticed in the Victoria British catalog is that the 79 has a second pipe with possibly a small muffler on it . With my Monza installation theirs simply an open pipe sitting next to the Monza.
Question, what's up with the second pipe? If I'm trying to restore the car to more like original, what should I be looking for? Where there two mufflers on the car from the factory? Any suggestions?
Thanks guys,

The air pump diverts some air to a secondary shell around the heat exchanger and also a little air to a secondary shell around the thermal reactor. The air from the thermal reactor shell uses that little pipe to exit at the rear of the car.

Thanks,
The catalog diagram appears that both pipes come off the manifold. Does that mean that the secondary pipe needs to be muffled? (assuming I am going for original sound) In other words, is some of the engine noise transmitted through that pipe?
As an add on, I have the Monza muffler now and the car is too loud for my taste (my apologies to you performance buffs). Would adding a muffler to the secondary pipe quiet the car?

It's been a real long time, but I don't think you can even roast marshmellows in it once the air gets back there...and for no reason at all except that it snowed down here and crushed my plans to pull the RP streetport 12A from the '80 carcass in my driveway...
