Karack Group Dyno Tune Session

I was talking to Karack about setting up a tuning date kinda like Steve Kan does. I really want my car tuned and I want to see some dyno #'s, but don't have the cash to shell out.

After talking to him hes fairly open on doing this on a weekend in the future in either the Sacramento area or the Bay area. He said it can take up to 2 hours to tune the car completely and would charge about $85/hour to tune. So realistically we're looking at about

$200 per car + you would have to pay the dyno rate. (I'm looking into shops)

He is skilled at tuning Microtech, Power FC, Rtek or even an safc if you want some quick basic stuff done.

He also said he isn't familiar with Haltech, but could street tune an NA to learn it. He said street tune, since he wouldn't want someone paying the dyno operator per hour too while hes learning or w/e.

So the date is unknown at the moment, but will be set on a weekend.
The price for Karack's services are posted, bu the dyno rate at the shop isn't set yet, due to not knowing which shop to go to yet.

Just need to see who's interested and where they would be interested in tuning at then we can get the ball rolling.

If you have any questions or if I missed something feel free to pm me here. Karack is hella busy with work so pming him won't get you a fast response.

I can vouch for him as well as many others. We've had him tune n/a, large single bridgeported motors, etc.

Just make sure that your car is ready by the day we decide on. Karack can help troubleshoot small stuff that occurs and make adjustments on the tune day, but won't have time to sit there working on everyone's cars, as that becomes VERY time consuming.

Hopefully, you can find a dyno shop that is reputable and has seen rotary engines. A recent dyno tune produced some incredibly high numbers on my car that were essentially debunked at the track.

In the Bay Area, shop rates can run $100 to $150 /hour. If you can book a full eight-hour day, they would hopefully give some level of discount.

If you include setup time, it will probably take 1-2 hours for any car, so we're looking at 4-5 cars max in a given day. If there is enough interest, this could turn into a two day affair.

But yes, I'm interested. Just name the time and place. :icon_tup:

what about wolf, does he have any experience tuning with this ecu? thanks

tek_88 11-08-10 08:33 PM

interested...now I gotta hurry and finish my setup.

Black Hearts 11-08-10 09:25 PM

i know gazo @ J&G has held dyno session at his shop before, and with steve kan iirc

Seeing that my car is up and running fine, I am in on this.

Currently found a fuel leak so I have some parts coming to fix that and then I need to get 500 miles on the motor.

But seeing that this won't happen til probably beginning of next year or as early as next month then count me in!

I would be down for a tune from krack if u guy's can set it up

Dynojet and Mustang dynos produce different numbers.

And if the shop owner wants to be a dick/stupid and doesn't offer a substantial discount for an all-day dyno session, he can watch a competitors' shop get the business instead. Dyno tunes are a great way for them to make a lot of money, since they're just going to be standing by watching the dyno pulls anyway. But a lot of them are greedy bastards, so whoever sets this up needs to be a good communicator and able to do some proper negotiating.

For the turbo guys, it would be helpful to know up to what boost levels Karack is going to be tuning. People are going to want to know what to expect, and paying $400-500 in this economy just add 10 hp is going to make people really upset.

I think this thread is a good idea, and I'm simply adding my own experiences.

I hope this happens.

SmogSUX 11-10-10 01:27 PM

I'll be negotiating once we decide on a location (Bay or Sac) and who is down.

SSDTURBO2 11-10-10 04:44 PM

i would be down only if it was in san diego..

Can ben tune Haltech ps1000? I have money on Steve khan right now but it looks like it's not gunna happen anytime soon. If he can tune Haltech, I can try n get my refund and go toward ben master!

i'm going to be installing and tuning one soon but it will only be on a non turbo, i will see how the timing maps look once finished and if i feel comfortable with the outcome that they will be reliable for a turbo car (different maps but knowing where they stand as far as detonation/preignition threshold go that is) then i will be able to do it. this will be a few months though, while i wait for him to get everything together for his setup.

the price is based off an hourly basis unlike some other tuners who charge a straight up fee per car, which is a little more realistic. i can go as high as the customer wants boostwise within reason. say if a customer wants to go to 20psi on straight pump fuel with no auxiliary injection then i would obviously tell them that that is not wise and 15, maybe 16 psi is their limit. as an aside, pushing over 400 on softer seals like atkins 2mm(they are the least tolerant of even the slightest detonation) isn't recommended or on series 4 engines with small dowel pin lands or more than 500 on S5 with slightly larger dowel pin lands(the engines twist under high enough of a load that the rear iron twists and cracks). so i don't have a set guideline like some tuners do but i will warn you if i think you are going to be pushing unsafe levels.

some sort of deposit may be a good idea also to prevent flakes from taking spots and not showing.

SmogSUX 11-11-10 04:01 PM

I intend on doing deposits and such. Just need to gauge interest for tuning and location.

SmogSUX 11-14-10 12:09 AM

I'll make this official-here's the list:

1. SmogSUX
2. 088
3. tek_88
4. HardHitter
5. anderdick88
6.
7.

So far from the interested parties I can't tell whether it should be in the bay or Sacramento. Any preferences?

RotaryEvolution 11-14-10 11:29 AM

or somewhere in between, depending on how long it takes to get organized i may be doing Juan's FC out in fairfield around the time this starts.

RicerJ 11-14-10 11:11 PM

if its close to sac or in sac ill head out to see what everyone is up to

jrx13 11-15-10 09:02 AM

Don't forget, I'd like a dyno tune too.

aeagles 11-15-10 10:40 AM

aeagles, if can tune w/wolf3d

SmogSUX 11-15-10 01:47 PM

Copy paste the list and add your name if you want a tune. Also everyone try and pm me your setup and ems so I can plan this further.

I'm in SF but can tow the car to sacramento with enough notice. I dont need a full tune, just mostly peak power and some fine tuning to the map probably. Won't know til we get it on the dyno I guess.

Funkspectrum 11-16-10 06:48 PM

I need to order my PFC first...but I'll list up anyway just in case it happens before the tuning sessions.

It's looking like the dyno session will be somewhere in the bay. Does anyone have preference as to whether they would like it before or after Christmas? I know that the holiday season is when people are the most financially burdened. Just trying to see what helps people the most.

turnski 11-17-10 10:57 PM

Smog ,I'm down for having My motor set up by Ben.. I'm looking for 12 psi on Rtek 2.1. I'm in

Funkspectrum 11-18-10 04:27 PM

Nick, I heard about a diesel shop by my house that rents out dyno time at 50 an hour. I'll look into it.

tek_88 11-18-10 05:48 PM

:icon_tup: for after the holidays that way i can get my fuel set up ready...and my vmount
