Functioning tach required for CA smog?
Does the tachometer in the meter cluster need to be accurate/working in order to pass a CA smog test?
Hopefully one of the CA smog guys can give a quick answer. I have an FD with a bad tachometer and fixing/replacement is going to take me a while. I don't have a problem driving the car with a bad tach, just focusing on getting it road-legal for now. Thanks. |
A tach is an option that has nothing to do with emissions or safety besides they have a tach displayed on their monitor that they use so I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the input. I know it 'should' be fine. It should also be fine without an egr, with a simple single turbo, better intake and proper ECU tuning. Unfortunately, the rules are rules and I don't know them well enough. Just looking for a definitive yes or no. The state should also be worried about a lot bigger issues than my exhaust. But for now, I'll settle for a nice shiny 2013 sticker.

lol i took my fc to the ref to get it to pass smog because apparently having a well grounded car is illegal and is modifying emissions lol

My tach was flickering during my smog at a legit shop (they failed me for an unplugged IAT previously). They didn't bat an eye at the jumpy-as-hell tach and I passed just fine.
