Dry sump: where can i buy? and is any one running one?
 

im curious to see if any one was running a dry sump on there FD or any rotary for that matter..

im looking into maybe getting one, since i am building my car for mostly track use.

and would it be practical?


also whats a good company to get one from (besides mazdatrix)

or would making my be better?

Not many people run one on a 13B it seems, there's a few on 20B's though.. Mazdaspeed seems a popular choice.

Generally dy sumps get cost prohibitive ($2k if you piece your own out of used circle track parts. $3-4k for a kit setup).

Have you considered an Accusump instead? Accusump seems to solve 99.9% of the oil issues for LS1 guys. I have to imagine it would have some benefits for Rotary as well.

whats the difference between the accusump and dry sump

the 13B doesn't need any oiling mods except for maybe a baffle in the FC oil pan which was cured in the FD oil pan. people who mod their rotaries to pump out 100+psi of oil pressure too just make me shake my head and ask why? it just causes more problems..

Dry sump is a full second stage to the oil system (pan pickups scavenge whatever oil they can to feed a tall narrowish reservoir that the oil pump then draws from). Dry sump setups run ~$3k+

Accusump is a add on for a wet sump system. Oil pickup pulls oil directly from the pan like normal however, one of the oil gallies is plumbed out to an external reservoir through an electric check valve. In this case the reservoir uses a floating piston with air pressure on the opposite side to maintain pressure. If a sensor ever sees oil pressure drop on the engine side, the valve opens and the air pressure rams the oil back into the motor. It basically buys you margin if your pickup goes momentarily dry (what killed my last motor) or if you blow an oil line or rip open your pan you get a window of time to get the car shut off (~30-45 seconds for a 3 qt accusump). Accsumps have the added bonus that they pre-oil your motor prior to cranking because when you first turn the key to the on position oil pressure in the motor is read as "low" so the valve opens and stored pressurized oil lubes things just before it turns over. Accusump setups run ~$500-600
