SR Motorsports KKK kit and RHD cars??

Thinking of going single turbo on my RHD Jap spec 93 FD3S. The stockers have thrown an exhaust wheel down the downpipe, shaft sheared. I have a few must haves:

Must have a bullet proof manifold, the idea of hanging all that weight off a fabricated stainless pipe one does not bode well to me, I'd prefer having more weight, maybe compromised flow, but the durability of a cast iron manifold. I'd prefer a remote wastegate, but it must vent back into the main system. The car will be driven to and fro race tracks but just used as a track day car on full size road circuits. As such it must have some semblance of bottom end, no drag race monsters that need nitrous to spool them up, I'd like decent boost by 4000 RPM.

I am thinking of building an air to water I/C. the car has had its battery relocated to the rear, no ABS, no PAS, no air con., and no air pump. It doesn't need to pass any emissions. I have a Power FC on her at the moment, no cats but engine and fuelling stock. Will go to bigger injectors and pump and a reg, but don't want to rebuild the internals just yet, so want to run close to stock boost levels for reliability for a while. Also want to run pump gas, similar to that you have in the USA.

Looking at HKS TO4 hit, Apexi kit (what's the 8 bit and 16 bit stuff with the Apexi kit on Takakairas site BTW?), the SR KKK kits and maybe the XS Engineering kits.

Any comments as the best way to go please, and which will fit a RHD car?

Many thanks from the UK.

I have the KKK stage 2 kit from SR Motorsports and love it. Full boost by 3800 and AWESOME power to boot. 450rwhp at 15psi.... The kit is a bitch to install. You have to beat the frame rail to get the turbine side of the turbo in so as not to rub. But this little inconvieniance is worth it.

Thanks Ernie, but when you say "Beat the frame rail", just how much re shaping is needed, a slight ding, or enough for the rail to lose structural rigidity? Is the turbo mounted well forward, I am concerned re anything interefering witha right hand drive cars steering coupling from column to rack, or the brake servo.

Is the manifold cast iron?

Any pics of your install anywhere?

Thanks again.

OT, but i just watched the SR-Motorsport FD blow something up at Battle Qualifying today. Sounded like the driveline.... It pulled the front tires WAY off the ground, but didnt go much further than 60ft

Then the YS-Engenierring FC broke something...
There was a cool sliver R100 that ran like a 10.5 with the hood coming off...
Anyways-

Re: SR Motorsports KKK kit and RHD cars??

Any turbo kit made by a Japanese company will fit your car. SR might not. APEX, Greddy, Blitz, HKS, etc will. XS Engineering will because it's the same design as the HKS. The 8 bit 6 bit thing you talk about is the differrnt ECU. The 92-95 RX-7's have the 8 bit computer. From 96 and up have the 16 bit computer. Everything should be the same but there is monior change on the vacuum hoses. If you need to bang the chassis to fit the SR, I guess it will fit your car too. Just bang on anythign that's in its way to make it fit. If you like the KKK K27 turbo, just buy a Blitz kit. It uses the K27 turbo as well. This way, you don't have to bang on anything to make it fit. It's deisgned for the RHD car so you will have a peace of mind.

Like I should talk. I probably cut half of my radiator supports to get the T-78 to work with my intercooler.

I agree, the Blitz kit sounds safer, but do you, or anyone else, know if the Greddy kits manifold is cast, like the SR one, or a fabricated tube one? I am just plain not happy with swinging a turbo unsupported off a fabbed manifold, I have seen SO many nicely made tubular manifolds fail on other cars in road racing here in the UK, additional supports are a PITA to do, as the expansion means a really solid support will either crack itself, or move the stresses elsewhere. Even Ford with the Cosworth Sierra had cracking problems and had a very complex effort to hold the turbo yet allow expansion and contraction. A cast iron job is admittedly crude, but probably a lot more reliable.

If I were to buy the HKS manifold alone, will it take and external wastegate plumbed back to the system, and will it take the whole TO4 turbo family?

I just want to get this right first time, sorry for all the questions and thanks for your help!

Forcefed7,
Funny you say that. I had no problems sunday as I was only running on low boost..........BUT this past Tuesday I was taking my wife to work and stepped into it, not anything out of the ordinary(again, low boost) and in fourth gear, at about 5500rpm the engine just died. I mean completlely cut off. I pressed the clutch in and out to pop start the motor and when it started, I could tell right away, something went wrong with the motor.
Only thing I can think is Dave, at KDR leaned my PFC out too much last week when he popped my motor on the dyno and never richened it back up. Cause w/ over 650 miles on the motor theres no excuse for this ****...Anyways its once again back up at KDR. I'll keep you posted.

Ernie, The offer is still there. You need a better tuner, one that knows about making serious power like ITO or some people I know in NY.

Re: Re: Re: SR Motorsports KKK kit and RHD cars??

For the manifold:

Greddy td06: cast
HKS To4e: cast
HKS T51R kai: stainless tubular
Greddy T78: stainless tubular
Greddy T88: stainless tubular
blitz KKK street: don't know
blitz KKK formular: stainless tubular
APEXi: stainless tubular

You can buy the HKS manfiold but you need to buy the wastegate separately. The wastegate on the HKS manifold accepts the 50mm racing wastegate. It will fit any T04 family as long as you have enough clearance between the lower intake manifold and the chassis.

damn... the funny thing " from sr site
"***No cutting or welding of your intake manifold

like with the T-78 or T- 88 kits . Just bolt it on"

guess they leave out ***beat frame rail then just bolt it on***..go figgur...hope the cars ok ernie..that sux if its the motor again

Unhappy

Ernie T...I can't believe that just happened to you again. I think you should let your wife drive for now on, since you don't have any luck. I still have to go back to KD soon, I might see your car up there. Maybe you can give me a ride this time when it's working properly. Good luck with your car.
