Hand-Machined Acrylic Shift Knobs

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...7/DSCN1172.jpg

Hey guys, maybe you saw my gauge of interest thread in the 2nd gen specific forum. Anyway, I just purchased the 3 month vendor license, and am now ready to start selling these.

Here's how it works. They'll pretty much be made to order- PM or email me at balk007@aol.com with the type of car you have, so I know what to tap the threads to.

Next is the engraving. So far, this is the only engraving I've done:

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...7/DSCN1155.jpg

More designs will follow, and I'll post them here as I have them done. What I have in mind are: the old Mazda "M" symbol, the "Rotary Engine" badge logo found on 79/80's & REPUs, Mazda script (old, ~1974 era, & current), RE mazda symbol. But as far as the engraving goes, anything is possible. So have an open mind here.

Finally, let me know what size height you want (tall or short, tall being ~2.5", short being 2.0")

That's all for now, final price is:

$60 shipped in the US, $65 shipped out side

PM or email me if interested, or if you have any questions/comments/feedback/etc. Thank you!

Landon

They look pretty good! Have no idea what im talking about but would it be possible to tint the acrylic material??

Landon303 09-24-10 07:24 PM

Yep, it could be dyed grey, or really any color, so it would be transparent, but not clear. I've got some I worked on over the weekend, I'll post pictures tomorrow, in the sun light

misterstyx69 09-24-10 08:43 PM

what is the diameter of the knob?
I like the Rotor insignia on the top.Nice touch!
I may pick up one of these for my Birthday,as a "Self present"..haha!

Prometheus 09-24-10 10:12 PM

what about faux opal or moon stone?

that would be tits for a track knob,

2red1986rx7s 09-25-10 04:58 AM

i like this. can you dye it blue?

x2 on dying it..I have an awesome idea for a green lantern themed knob :)

chatchie 09-26-10 06:44 PM

Get some more pics up of the dyed knobs. Is this the only style you have? it looks a little fat, maybe its just the picture though.

Landon303 09-28-10 11:04 PM

OK, been busy with school, but here's some update-age.

Diameter of the ones in the original post are ~1.5", but I can't recall exactly

A blue "dildo shifter" I did for a friend. About 5" long, but only an inch in diameter. It's dyed blue, but due to the blue gauges, it may look *a little* more blue in this picture.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...3/blueknob.jpg

Also, by the weekend I'll have pictures of some dyed green knobs, and other engraving examples.

As for shapes, they're pretty customizeable, keeping in mind that it's a manual metal lathe, so flowing organic curves are pretty much out of the question with my current tooling set up.

I'm working on doing weighted knobs- I believe the solution is to drill the hole twice deep, & fill the extra depth with solder, as its a cheap, dense, easy to melt, relatively non-toxic, solution for adding weight.

Some acrylic comes in some really crazy colors, but it will add to the cost of the knob a bit. Here, check this out for opal/moon stone type looks: http://www.woodturningz.com/Inlace_A...le_Blanks.aspx

Anyway, stay tuned, I'll get more updates, picture wise, by the weekend!

Thanks

Landon

I will be passing through Tampa at the end of next month to check on my truck. Would love to pick one of these up from you for my FD. That dildo stick must be a hot seller @ Deja Vu, 2001 and Mons lol

How bout the short knob done in this: inlace Acrylester Spindle 1.5" x 1.5" x 6"

Awesome Landon!

Landon303 10-08-10 02:05 PM

2 more knobs, these are opaque, pearl blue/white, & they really look good! They're both the same knob, each picture is at a different angle, to show the different swirl pattern as it varies around the outter diameter

woah these are awesome!
any difference in price for the larger/colored knobs?

Landon303 10-10-10 02:56 PM

Oh, right-- I forgot to mention the intricately colored (not the dyed, though) adds $15 each, as the material block is $10, and shipping of the material's $5

Narfle 10-18-10 10:42 PM

How much do they weigh without adding lead? Thx.

They're not heavy, but not feather light either. Probably about 4 ounces, I'll get one on a scale in the next few days & take a picture. Obviously height & diameter dimensions have different effects on weight.

Landon303 10-30-10 12:36 PM

sorry for the delay, but just weighed one.

Reading ~83 grams, ~2.9 ounces. So, not too heavy, but not feather light either. Working currently on on weight addition! =)

Thanks, & stay tuned.

green lantern!

Crazy rainbow colored knob, don't worry, it's for a girl haha. The weird shifts in the
stripes are where the different pieces of acrylic were laminated together

Mazdaspeed knob, in the GReddy style'd shape

cnidus 11-22-10 07:57 AM

Nice.

Any word on weighted ones?

I'd like a clear one in the same shape as ur multi-colour crazy one, with the oldschool mazda logo on top, Cnidus in the "signature" type text down one side.

Ideally I want the engraving filled with Series 8 RX7 blue.... but I can buy some touch up paint from the dealer and do myself.

What do you reckon about making it weighted. Obviously the material would have to look the part on a clear knob..... Ideas? Weighted knobs feel soo much better for shifting, especially on notchy boxes.

sp1d3r 02-05-11 10:09 PM

If you're still making these shift knobs, I'd be interested in one. Especially if you can make the wighted ones. Thank You!

lastfc3 02-13-11 02:03 PM

jr515 02-13-11 05:05 PM

How much for the Greddy style one? If possible, I would like to have the 1st gen 7 on the top.

RotaSpinna69 02-13-11 05:52 PM

I'd like to know as well!

chatchie 02-13-11 08:55 PM

He hasnt been in this thread in months. I think this project is dead.

Kman Art 02-13-11 08:59 PM

Def not dead. I'm about to place my second order with him for knobs.

O_Adam_7 02-14-11 12:08 AM

i hope he gets back on. i want one! ^_^

Landon303 03-09-11 08:03 AM

Hey all--

I've been swamped in school work this semester, and didn't even know there was any activity in this thread because I hadn't the time to check it. It was actually someone else who informed me via PM to let me know, yikes.

Anyway I've found a way to weight the knobs that's easy enough that I don't mind doing it, but it does take a bit more time so I'd like to ask for $15 more for the cost of
weighting material & time.

I just re-newed my vendor license, so I'm good to go in that respect. I'll be making a few knobs here soon, will get new pictures up soon.

Thanks all for showing support in my product, it's because of this that I'm able to be here and do what I really love, for owners of the cars that I love

I'll be on spring break starting Thursday, tomorrow, until the 22nd, so I'll have quite a bit of machine time available to me. Following that, I'll be able to work on weekends, and have a 4 month, class-less summer so I can definitely do some turning :)

Thanks again all, stay tuned for new pictures! I've PM'd everyone who'd shown an interest in the thread since I last checked it.

Cheers!

Landon

I'll weigh the one I've got at the house this weekend when I get back from school-- It's weighted with brass powder. But I'm soon going to be switching to lead or tungsten powder, so expect the weights to increase quite a bit!

Thanks

Landon
