what v8 to put in my 93 rx

I tried to do a search and could only come up with jimlab's project and some specs on a ls1. To make a long story short 3 motors later my car has been sitting in my garage for about a year and a half, and I am through with that engine. I had everything done right and maintained the car properly. (The first two enigines were from the origional owner).

I WILL be gutting the car and once I actually look at what parts I have on there (can't even remember)I will sell them and buy a v8.
Just need y'alls help with which size. I do not want to spend more than about 5-6k on the motor. I know a lot of you love your engines and I am glad, and I do not wish to get into an argument about reliabilty or performance. Just some advice or places to do research on what will fit best.

If your cheap put in a Ford 302 or Chevy 350 as they are inexpensive and plentiful, if your feeling a bit more spendy get an all aluminum LS1.

Increased reliability, low end torque, rock solid drivetrain.

I like the v8 rx-7s, but I'm quite content with my rotary :)

thanks guys I will check this sites out. Yeah I was thinking about a 350. My step-brother is a mechanic for chevy and can get them real cheap. He just wanted me to do some research and tell him what I wanted. He said 400-500hp 350 around 2500-3k. I'll have to look into it.

As far as why I want one, well with me its real easy. I want reliabilty and horsepower. I'm an old man now (24) and dont feel like tinkering. I will miss the sound of those bov's, oh well guess the rumble will have to do.

I will let y'all know when i sell the parts. Thanks

Carb'd 350 wont work without cutting the hood. you need an LT1 or LS1 and you arent getting those to 500hp with buying it and tranny for anywhere near $2500.

Good luck i just finished my LS1 FD swap!!

Any ferrari V8 would be nice, I think is a couple dollars over your price range though. Actually a ferrari V12 (Enzo motor) would be nice as well.

rotariesrule 08-11-03 07:33 PM

how about a turbocharged v-6.

Kurgan 08-20-03 04:51 PM

how about the v8 from the toyota tundra... that would rule.

I see your point but but look at it objectively. You have a light, good looking car that can fit a bigger engine with more torque and not loose too much of its 50/50 weight distr. If you were going to build the ultimate hotrod this would be it in my oponion. Just look at the 3rd gen board and if you find a single day where there are not atleast 15 complaints about things going wrong, it will be very surprising to me. I have no loyality to any company, domestic or import. If the car looks good, handles, and is fast i'll buy it. Ford chevy dodge acura mazda whatever. I also drive a truck so if you didn't hate me before you probably do now.lol.

Where is the best place to buy a new 350.

be first with the 5.0 swap!!!

TOUGHGUY 01-01-04 12:46 PM

Find a wrecked 2001 and up F body with an LS1 and 6 spd T56 tranny. Here's one on Ebay:

The LS1 isn't that much more expensive when you consider what you're getting. As time goes, performance parts will only come down in price. Besides, how much have you spent in motor mods/rebuilds since you bought your 7?

Toughguy :)

LT1-7 01-02-04 02:01 AM

I'd say go with an LT1 but that's just me. An LS1 is nice but much more expensive when you start to build it up. You can find endless parts for an LT1 just by buying conventional SBC parts. Plus the LT1s have the classic iron block exhaust sound compared to the aluminum hollowed exhaust most LS1 owners have learned to dislike

How come no one has shoe horned a big block chevy engine into the cars yet???

That would be soooooo awsome, you need to do it!!! There would be no more cornering ability, but you would be unbeatable in a straight line.

Just get a 427/454, and lower the compression to around 8.5/1, and put an 8-71 blower on it. And bammm, you got around 500+ HP. And one hell of a car!!!

turbogarrett 01-02-04 08:35 AM

for me the ls1 is the only way to go because of the weight issue and i do plan on doing more than drag racing with it(autocross, etc)

Cory Simpson 01-02-04 08:49 AM

I'm pretty sure it you put any V8 in your car it will handle considerable worse, but the LS1 may be lighter than I am thinking.

Be creative, make it a mid engine :D That would be awsome, you could get a navistar (the front wheel drive V8 cadilac) engine, and put it in your hatch :D

turbogarrett 01-02-04 09:00 AM

the 13brew is not all that light, the difference is only ~10lbs(ls1). then if you consider that most are using larger, heavier intercoolers, radiators etc....

Cory Simpson 01-02-04 09:25 AM

Hummm, didn't know that...

I still think pioneering a BBC/Hemi would be wayyyyy cooler.

If I was going to do another motor swap it would most likely be with a hemi. Although technically my 7MGTE is a hemi....

It's a bigger difference than that. My LS1 weighs somewhere in the 430-440lb rate based on the shipping weight on my invoice (680lbs including tranny, pallet, etc.) The 13brew weighs around 390lbs by most estimates. Still, 50 lbs heavier isn't that big a deal imho.

One of these days I'll get my ls1 converted fd up to a corner weight scale and see what the damage is.

Good luck with that. There isn't enough room for proper headers in my ls1 converted fd, so putting in a big block won't be posibble without some serious modification.

One of the beautiful things about the ls1 swap is the ease with which everything fits. Mine went in with some very minor modifications to the car, and the engine looks like it belongs there from the factory. With the exception of a fewe obvious performance pieces under my hood an uninformed person wouldn't think anything's wrong with my engine bay :)

Cory Simpson 01-02-04 02:11 PM

Ohh I know it would fit, the heads of a 426 hemi would probably stick clear of of the hood, and be as wide as the suspension towers. But thats the great thing about it!!! It would be awsome to see peoples faces when that pulls up.

It still amazes me how wide a 426 hemi is.....
