Holy Crap! I can't even comprehend how to live with thag kind of snow. I have trouble dealing with a lot of rain.

GFRENCH 03-10-17 07:24 PM

guys
i have been trying to learn and pick up axle related parts
running into a problem
i want both rear tires driven so is a locker or a lsd needed?
also will any listed for the 8.8 work?
as in any year truck or car housing
or is there truck units and car units

Yolo7 03-11-17 09:18 PM

Unless you only plan on drag racing the car you don't want a locker.

GFRENCH 03-12-17 11:57 AM

sorry for such green horn question
but this is my first rear axle build as well
i will not be track or street racing however i do
want both tires driven for performance times as needed

so do i buy a stock lsd ?

GFRENCH 04-11-17 08:10 PM

winter is finally going after one of the worst in history. january gave us a ice storm for 38 hours knocking power out for 5 days , hit aprox 130,000 homes. so much ice ran down the hood that it pulled off the bumper rubber trim.

just starting to get back at it

glad to see it out of hibernation. Stock LSD would probably be fine for you. how soon till you fire it up?

thanks
i found a new lsd on 3,73 gears locally for $350 so i think i will go with that.

as for first fireup well i will tell you that the day last fall when i finally got it mounted, seeing it sitting there burned in me all winter. over the winter i got the blockoff plate and found the right flywheel so i need to pull the engine again to mount the flywheel clutch and come up with another clutch release . that one i had fabed up will not fit the tunnel ,
and i need to remove the hood to clear the carb as it sits about 2 or 2 1/2 " too high so need good weather.

lots of work needs to be done and it's getting close , i moved my prelude out of the back yard last weekend so work will resume.
also over the winter i got the other tecno toys front suspension parts top hats 300lb 10" springs and there billet adjusters.
so i have to strip the front end again

GFRENCH 05-22-17 08:00 PM

today i got the front spring on the car.
cut the spring cup off weld on the 45mm rings from techno toys and the adj setters with the new spring
300lb per inch and car sits a tick high , ran out of time but just needs to be down about 1 inch

Freeskier7791 05-24-17 08:45 AM

Nice job, did the same thing to mine

GFRENCH 05-24-17 08:14 PM

thanks but not done yet
techno toys camber plates are next
since i looked at that site i was hooked.

GFRENCH 06-10-17 06:28 PM

Guys
Working on the rx7 goes on
Any of you know how wide the rear end should be?
I would like to start building the axle but can't seem to find any info at all
Thanks

any luck with measure of the rear end?
yesterday i received 95 mustang rear discs
i have the calipers already

Yolo7 09-03-17 04:45 PM

Have you finished up your front suspension or accomplished anything else lately?

front suspension is all done with the springs seat and 300lb springs
it sits perfect
but i really need to pull the engine for some clearance issues i have with headers.
i haven't had much free time this summer and i am not where i wanted to be .
hope to get to it later this month,
parts are comming for the rear axle
moser ends and a lsd diff with 3.73 gearing

Yolo7 09-04-17 05:14 PM

It sounds like I'm in a similar boat to you in regards to working out some clearance issue for the headers.
What headers are you using and are they contact the steering box?

GFRENCH 09-05-17 08:20 PM

headers

the headers i found are from a 65-74 mustang , bought them on ebay cheap as i thought i was going to destory them to fit.
to my surprise they fit perfectly on the passenger side but off just a little on the drivers side .
both sides seem to contact the floor area at the fire wall bottom curve into the floor area . once i get the engine out i can either bend in the floor or cut out for clearance.
i did not want to but i think i going to remove the steering box for a manual steering rack

any of you do this before?

I have thought about it before, blacktie motors has a very poorly designed kit out now. I do not think it would be a lot of work to make something

guys i decided to go another route
keep the steer box and build a header kit that i weld myself
i found that the tranny mount i made last summer is in the way. i forgot about where the pipes need to go.
so last night i cut off the mount tabs and starting with a mustang crossmember i made some new brackets and welded them in
and as it happens engine clears the fire wall fine and carb mount is level as this tips the engine back the right amount

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...8bfa03c52f.jpg
the raised parts of this crossmember, are they for the exhaust pipes on a mustang?

Yolo7 09-26-17 11:04 PM

I like the idea of using the Mustang cross member, it looks good. I wish I could remember if that raised area is for the exhaust but I can't. I would run the exhaust through there though. Just try and build a heat shield under the floor boards so you don't cook your balls off.

thanks
i thought about this all day and it hit me tonight aim the collectors at these raised portions of the cross member . weld on some hangers for the exhaust.
i want to remove all parts and maybe lizard skin coat the entire floor area.
this car is the cleanest underside i have ever seen in a 37 year old anything. all who see this in person can't understand that it is untouched and this clean.
i want to ensure that it is protected .

i see lizard skin have a thermal coat as well as sound dampening, this should make the best heat shield as well as protect the underbody.
the deeper i get into this rx7 the more i love it. at first it was just to get it running and now it is changed to what ever it needs to make it perfect.

this cross member also alows me to use a x pipe
what are any of you out there using x or h pipe?

Yolo7 09-27-17 10:01 PM

It's funny how we start these projects with lower standard and as we go we set our goals become higher. I still laugh at myself when I told my wife it would get it done with a $3K budget, including buying the RX-7. Now 3 years later and probably have $6K into it and I have still never driven and RX-7, including mine. But I love that POS LoL.

I plan on running a single exhaust down the right side. I'll run two 2.5" pipes into a y-pipe with 3.5" out.

Freeskier7791 09-28-17 07:08 AM

I would have loved to run an X pipe but I really don't have room. I have dual 2.5 inch with a Y pipe to 3 inch up and over the axle. The y pipe is right at the end of the tailshaft. I can take some pictures. I settled with a 3 inch out because 2.5 to 3.5 y pipes are hard to find and way expensive

thanks guys
i saw on grannys mule car something like yours but i can't seem to find a y pipe any where. at first i was going this way and bought a flowmaster 40 in 3".
i don't have any other parts just yet but not settled on a x pipe .
one thing that is bothering me is the you weld header kit i'm looking at has a 3" collector
does it hurt any for 3" all the way back?
