Hmmm, that explains a lot.
I don't like run 235 wide tires on anything other than an 8" to 8.5" wide rim.  I think the 9" wide rim is just too much width for the 235 to stretch that sized tire onto it.  I know the whole JDM fad where they like to run their wheel/tire combos this way, but I find some of the extreme wheel/tire combos will allow the tire should to roll and rub the tire sidewall.  Having the car roll on the tire sidewall is not considered safe.

I wouldn't consider a 235 being stretch'd on a 9" wheel .. its actually perfect...

Anyway, you have your theory, I have mine.

I'm sorry, but those wheels/tires would make you illegal in Hawaii and most other areas in the U.S. - having the tire tread outside of the wheel well is unsafe.  Upon heavy compression of the suspension, the tire can hit the wheel well and cause a blow-out which can easily get you hurt.

I don't advocate running wheel/tire combinations that do this.

-Ted

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I borrowed those rims to see how they'd fit for experimentation only. HAHA, ya, I'd never run something like that.

raising arizona 01-23-04 11:03 AM

I'm not much for tires past the upper wheel well...I would have those tires ruined in 20 minutes on the road course.... He may be into drag'n though.... Everyone has there own ideas, which is the whole idea of this Thread, so lets keep the opinions to a minimum.... cool? :)

fstrnyou 01-23-04 11:34 AM

those tires on my car are also 275's. i don't plan on running any more than 245's on the front anyhow.

my ACTUAL tires are on stock TII rims 225/45-16 712's.

raising arizona 01-23-04 12:38 PM

I could see 245's up front being a large improvement....I could run a 5mm spacer and it wouldn't rub inside, but I think they would stick out to much without flairs...Which I have no plan on getting... My car is finished, unless I get the Y2K bumper and a rear defuzer...but thats it. The car is fast enough for the traction I have...

RETed 01-23-04 08:24 PM

Wow, some of you are running some wacked tire sizes.
I just put a tire size chart here...

I have a question... with coilovers, can you go with larger offset? If so, how much larger? Would 8.5 inch and 9.5 wide rims with 35 offset fit? And how much wider can you go with tires?

raising arizona 01-24-04 01:30 PM

Those sizes will work...Keep in mind its the tire that bumps not the wheel itself...

I just wanted to add my 2 bits. I was interested in the adr M-sport due to the fact it came with a nice lip. I tryed an 18x8.5 +35 offset. it was really close to shock, were talking like 1/2mm, and this was with out a tire so there was no room for a tire. due to this experince I am now planning on running a 18x8 +35 offset in the front and 18x9/9.5 +35 offset in the back.

i was looking at those wheels too. please keep us posted with your thoughts. thanks

raising arizona 01-28-04 10:00 AM

I'm not an 18" expert, but the taller wheel will play a part in it rub'n the shock/coil..... There is a guy with a mod'd red 88 TII ( and you've all seen his car) and he runs 18's...ask him... I can't honestly tell ya...

Actually it's a common myth to think wheels that require larger rims will be taller.  You can manipulate the aspect ratio to keep the larger rim tires to be the same overall height as with the stock tires.

RETed: I understand how it works, however every wheel is so different and being I've never installed an 18" on a TII I couldn't tell the guy if that brand of wheel would honestly bump... Maybe you have 18's on your car and know the answer... :)

Depends on the tire size... :D
But they should work. :)

Grimlock 01-30-04 02:31 PM

another ?

with that front offset of 32mm, do you think the rim will stick out alot. like the white car with the 25mm? what you think?

thanks again?

No, with a 225/40/18 tire up front, it should fit under the stock fenders.

thanks dude...

your knowledge is greatly appriciated!!

I was looking at the exact same setup as you with the RPF1's. Do you have any close up shot's of your car?

Thanks man

raising arizona 02-01-04 05:02 PM

I plan on taking some good photos very soon....I've updated alot of things. I'll PM ya when I get them....The 275's look kinda cool.

whats the widest tire size i can go with?

rear set up -- 18x9 35mm offset

can i go 285 on a fc? anyone running this set up?

raising arizona 02-02-04 09:29 AM

18 x 9's +35mm will fit, but with a 285?...I don't think that will, unless you roll the outers. Try it! You'll never know until you try.

It's a little tight on the inside, so you might need to bend the muffler heat shield, but it should fit with a conservative tire width.

285 is one of those rare tire sizes.  275 is a way easier tire size to run.  Any reason why you want to run so wide out back?  Very large staggers (front versus rear) makes for a heavily pushing chassis.  275 is a tight fit, so the 285 might or might not work - I can almost guarantee the 9" +35 in back, it's going to hit inside suspension if you go with a 285 wide tire.
