Get your free FD3S suspension bushing dimensions here...

Since it seems that some people want to treat my bushing designs as if they were public domain and make a profit off my work by selling copies, I figured I might as well publish the dimensions so that anyone can make a set from whatever material they want... "big name brand" or otherwise.

Just click here to download a .zip file containing images of all 7 bushings and center pins for identification, as well as AutoCAD .dxf files for each one. An example is shown below.

Enjoy!

Why waste my time trying to defend a non-patentable/non-patented design? All I wanted was a little respect, not cash.

Jim,

love the bushings...too bad about the copying. Hopefully, it won't happen to your other project pieces...cradle, etc...

Thanks, hopefully not.

My headlights are going to be rather complex, so they would be difficult for someone to duplicate without access to vacuum forming and machining facilities. You won't be able to make a simple two-part mold, bend and drill a few pieces of cheap steel, and throw in a flat sheet of plexiglas with some black paint on it, in other words.

I've already had someone look into making a copy of my Cobra IRS cradle (with my blessing) and the ballpark estimate they got was "not less than $1,000", and that's probably low. It was easier and far cheaper to buy directly from me, and now Alex, now that he has my welding jig and patterns.

As far as other parts, who knows. It's obvious that copying other's products is not only tolerated but seemingly encouraged on this forum. The on-going light kit group buy is just one example. Luckily, most people know cheap **** when they see it, and some are willing to pay more for quality.

I'm going to make some out of Play-Dough. Once you leave it out for a few days it gets plenty hard

This is great stuff! Thanks Jim.

I talked to you awile ago, and my impression was you were not going to make these anymore. I am the plastics injection mold maker. ;-)

I thought a set made from black walnut would be nice. It's too bad Wael doesn't own his car any more, because they'd match his steering wheel.

Your impression was correct. I have no intention of making more.

My purpose in posting the dimensions was to reduce or eliminate the profit potential for those producing copies and marketing them for $100 or so less than my bushings, "for the good of the community". Anyone who wants to make their own sets and undercut those people has my full endorsement.

Jim,
I am the proud owner of a set of your bushings. I actualy bought 2 sets during your last group buy and sold one set to my freind who did not have the money at the time. I also just got one of you Cobra Cradles. I think you do get work and look forward to seeing what you come up with next. I to make alot of custom parts for me car and my freinds car, but so ar everything I made is one off.

Thanks again for the great work.

Would it be possible to get the files with the 3D drawings? The ones you did the screen shots of. I have the programs to open them. Although this is not neccesary, I have to ask.

What you guys have to appreciate is that jim is an evil genius and may have fudged all the dimensions slightly

...but those of us who know better would never believe he would do such a thing.

They were done with emachineshop (http://www.emachineshop.com) since it was handy (already installed) and free. I believe the files (ems) are proprietary to emachineshop, but I'd be more than happy to post them. The only export option was AutoCAD .dxf.

Heh. The dimensions are accurate to four decimal places.

To what tolerance did you have the batches machined jim? 2, 3, 4 decimal places?

4 decimal places. I randomly checked samples on each group buy and the variance was within 0.002-0.003".

Just click here to download a .zip file containing images of all 7 bushings and center pins for identification, as well as AutoCAD .dxf files for each one. An example is shown below.

Enjoy!
Hey Jim, do you still have the bushing autocad dwg. files? I tried your link but it didn't work.

Details and cost for a pair? Rotary Run are the only light kit I care for and worst case I'll do a wael style with the stockers and the Hellas.

Jim,
Do I understand that your light kit is once again making progress, and/or there's a potential GB in the works? I couldn't find a thread related to it under your handle, so could you point me in the right direction if it's elsewhere?

Thanks!

Send me an e-mail and I'll see if I can find the files for you.

I don't know that I'd call it progress, but the CAD guy who was doing nothing has turned it over to an instructor for one of his courses, who so far is doing nothing. The intent was to make it a "class project", apparently.

Still a long way from a group buy, but there is hope that someday I'll have a headlight kit that I consider good enough to put on my car.
