Austin City Sevens

Salutations,

I've just moved in Austin for work and want to know what's going on around Texas. I miss my friendly 7's.

I've loved rotaries for last 16 years. Most of that time was spend on this forum or day dreaming. I had an 86 friends and I swapped to TII and am just about ready for an FD.

What's your story? What's going on in the area? What're you working on right now? Plans?

wankelbug 02-25-17 08:52 PM

I live in Austin area. Have a rotary swapped beetle drag car and just picked up an fc t2

MastrChase 02-26-17 01:52 AM

A rotary Beetle?! Pictures please! Is your TII running?

wankelbug 02-26-17 01:08 PM

Can't seem to get pics to upload from my mobile. The rx7 I just bought yesterday. Have not picked it up yet. Its,an 87 t2 complete with some aftermarket goodies but been sitting since 2012. May put it back on the road if it runs, well if it needs a rebuild I will steal the motor for my beetle and build it. If I steal the engine I will either part out the car, sell as a whole or v8 swap. Idk yet.

MastrChase 02-26-17 01:15 PM

V8 swap is heresy! Lol. What year is the beetle? And why a rotary? Turbo beetle? Get pics up of both when you can.

spacecaptainsteve 02-28-17 12:46 PM

I'm in Austin. I have a black FD. I have seen a red FD in Austin twice in the 4 years I have lived here, and a black one on Lime Creek (definitely check out this road for weekend twisty driving). Not many 7s around here though.

MastrChase 03-01-17 04:04 PM

Well I just moved here but I've already gotten in touch with an FD owner in Cypress (outskirt of Houston) and one in San Antonio. We've got to regroup!

Blue Devil 7 03-02-17 01:44 PM

It would be fun to see some more RXs. I have a lightly modded N/A FC that I only drive on nice days (like today), but I very rarely see any other rotaries on the road any more. This thread reminded me that we used to have an active club in town, Texas RXs. I hit their web site and surprisingly it is still around but it sounds like the rotary numbers are pretty low and they do stuff with the Miata club and other groups.

MastrChase 03-02-17 02:01 PM

Awesome! I just found them actually. So today I bought by FD roller. I'm an avid RX7 fan. I hope to round up the strays get just something going on a regular basis. Meetups, garage days, etc.

MastrChase 03-02-17 02:07 PM

THOUGH that being said, I don't consider LS swapped 7's to be RX7s. They're all dead to me. Lol. Be no really....Dead.

wankelbug 03-03-17 10:04 AM

What about hemi swapped?

MastrChase 03-03-17 10:43 PM

Damn that sounds nasty! Maybe...Since you have the roto-bug. Picccccs!

Hey man! This thread isn't that old. I HIGHLY suggest getting on FB and joining some Rx7 parts groups. There are a few in Texas and I've seen a lot of FC parts. I suggest these, search:

North Texas Rotary Enthusiasts
Texas Rotary Parts
Texas RX7 Classifieds
Houston RX7 Classifieds
RX7 ""Rotary""
Mazda RX7 Parts for Sale
and of course...
Austin City Sevens

GarageSpec 07-10-17 08:17 PM

Sorry to thread jack but I happened to see this. I'm at the end of a big long term fc build and am looking for someone in Austin to get it driveable so I can put some miles on it prior to taking it to the dyno.

Anyone hidden rotary dudes in Austin that want to make some money? I know zero car people here.

Sorry to thread jack.

PS WOULD LIKE TO MEET WEIRD ROTARY FOLK IN AUSTIN

Blue Devil 7 07-12-17 03:35 PM

I'm not much of a mech, but I have an FC. What does your build need?

MastrChase 07-12-17 07:48 PM

Yeah man, add me on Facebook: Ari Chase. I'm wearing a red shirt in my pic.

ZERO_YON 07-28-17 01:36 PM

Are there any rx7 meets out here in the austin area? I moved here from Las Vegas and am anxious to see the scene out here.

MastrChase 08-02-17 12:48 PM

Yes there are a few! Even south in San Antonio and north in Killeen. Find me on Facebook.

RockStim7 08-02-17 05:31 PM

Just bought my first FD. 1993 R1, 1 owner, all stock minus the radio. Will be delivered in a week. I'm in the North Austin area. Also looking for a rotary mech if anyone knows of a shop that can handle it. Hate to take it to Dallas if/when it needs some work.

Very nice man. What color? I'll keep an eye out as I am in north austin also. I have a black 1994 R2 and a red RX8.

As far as mechanics go we're outta luck. MZM performance used to do rotary stuff apparently but I think they're gone. John Long automotive specialist also doesn't do anything in depth like rebuilds these days. If only Chris Ott would bring the RP crew down to the central texas area...

Guess there's not many of us Austin folks here, but I just picked up a low mileage 85 GSL-SE. I'm a member of Capital Z of Texas, a Datsun Z car club here in a Austin, but it'd be cool to bullshit with some rotary people.

MZM is back up and running after moving to Georgetown last year. They're doing some work on mine right now.

RedZed 07-27-18 08:30 AM

Finally got my car on the road!

Are there any RX7 meets still occurring in Austin? If not, would there be any interest in getting these going again?

RockStim7 07-27-18 11:14 AM

I'm hoping to have my car up and running next week and probably have the Dyno completed in the next week after. I'd be willing to meet up for a get together. I'm in the Pflugerville area.

MastrChase 07-28-18 04:53 AM

Hey @RockStim7 if you haven't already join our Facebook group! https://www.facebook.com/groups/599553356904626/

RockStim7 07-28-18 11:25 AM

On there Potato. Will share some pics when I get it back on there as well

Tsukuba 01-20-20 09:11 PM

Resurrecting this for all the wankels who don't do the facegrams and snapspaces. Been out of scene and moved around Texas the past few years but looking to meet some others in Austin. Anyone still use this forum? Please don't force me to do social media :(

RockStim7 01-21-20 07:05 AM

Yeah, come and go and usually to browse the classifieds. Mine is back in the shop after blowing my rear rotor last May. Hopefully have it up and running and out of paint in the next month and a half or so. (Then hopefully have it on the road for more than 6 months this time)

RedZed 01-21-20 10:33 AM

We rarely have meets. Essentially, the Austin RX7 group is just a Facebook chat group.

Tommykaira 01-27-20 08:53 PM

I am also not on facegrams and snapspaces, so please reply to this thread if any cruises or meets are planned!

I just moved to the area myself, and I'd be happy to come out.

Tsukuba 01-28-20 06:00 PM

Well Cars and coffee @ COTA is Feb 16th, anyone want to meet before and cruise out there?

I am located in Pflugerville and willing to meet between here and downtown to head over to COTA

j_tso 01-28-20 09:07 PM

I'm not really a fan of car shows, but I went to Cars & Coffee in November since the 24H Series race was on the same day.
There's usually a couple of FDs but on that day there were the most first gens I've seen in a long time. I see more Skylines in Austin than RX-7s nowadays.

I will plan to make it out there, and if we can get some people together for a cruise, even better.

Agh, I missed that one. I’m usually out there with my Maya Gold 83. I was at Radwood last year but unfortunately missing out on this years due to a race in Phoenix.

Tsukuba 01-30-20 11:47 AM

Super Lap Battle is 15-16th so there will be some extra action going on if that interests any of you.

@Tommykaira What side of town are you coming from? I'll likely only stay for the C&C event as I have a wedding to attend that night but I am open to meet and cruise over to COTA on the 16th.

Can someone share this to the Facebook group? Open to suggestions on meeting spot so long as it is not south of downtown.

Tommykaira 01-31-20 02:49 PM

I'm in South Austin, but I can be persuaded to cross the river if we get a group together.

I was looking around everywhere for the owner of this FD. Talked to the FB owners for a while but never saw you. Maybe I will see you next time. I might be at cars and coffee or actually coffee and cars in Dripping Springs Sunday with my FD. :icon_tup:

Manny3 02-22-20 12:54 AM

Im up in OKC, mine is getting work done and should be complete in the next couple of months. Got an 84

I know this is an old thread, but how was your experience with MZM?

No issues. I actually just picked up the car yesterday to take to paint. They can take some time, but they'll have quite a few cars and it isn't like they have 10 guys in there working. We had to change out the ECU from haltech, so while waiting there I got moved back in the queue, but not really a bother for me with the Pandemic and money looking like it would be tight. They use a mustang dyno, so if you're chasing a HP number remember they read 15% (if I remember right) lower than the others. They know their stuff.

Depending on what you're getting done, just remember it likely won't be a pop in and out in a week thing. I say that, BUT realize that each time i've dropped mine off there it either didn't run, I had a ton being done to it or was setting up a new engine, turbo, harness, ecu, etc.

I would recommend for anyone in the Austin area that doesn't do all the work themselves. Mohammed also will take the time to explain things with you. He is certainly the opposite of pushy in trying to get you out the door.

Dripping Springs 07-07-20 07:21 AM

Okay, thanks for getting back to me. I have a 1982 FB that is either carbon locked or something worse. I've gotten a lot of good feedback from knowledgeable people, but haven't figured anything out yet, and I have no skills/tools/knowledge. So MZM might be the way to go. It's been off the road for five weeks. At some point, I have to quit letting it sit and find a reputable shop, and it sounds like MZM is reputable. Thanks again. PS: Your car looks great.

Would need some bracing added back in most likely, but can be done for sure.

I went back and forth on it. My car is far from unmolested at this point, and I have no intention of selling it. ever.

original mirror holes, antenna and spoiler holes all getting deleted. Some cuts for the headlights would ultimately be the least of the molestation on her.

Tsukuba 09-17-21 08:47 AM

Anyone going to Radwood next month? I am going to try to organize a few cars to pre-meet early so we can roll in and park together.
