to4E .60 trim 400whp capable?
hello, well im building my engine and i'm building it to get at least 400whp. i know that if get a 62-1 or a 60-1 turbo i would get those numbers but those turbos are 500-500hp capable and im not into that hp for now. im looking for a good turbo to reach 400hp and i was thinking of a to4e .60 trim, would that be a good choise?? engine is being build with a big street port, pinned etc. already have the microtech, big injectors,fuel pump, etc. just want to know if im in the right direction since im seeing a borg warner to4e that has catch my attention.

It will not come close to 400whp. More like 280-300whp. The smallest I would go with a large street port is a GT35R or similar size. The BW T series arent worth the money, the Garrett are better.

Based on Howard Colemans chart and math. A turbo that flows 45lb/min is capable of approx. 339.xxx RWHP for a rotary. Check out his big sticky thread on turbo comparison. Wonderful stuff.
So C.Ludwig can very well have had a car do that to the wheels.;) |
The 57 trim T04E no, not gonna hit 400 RWHP safely unless you run 20 psi+ and some aux injection. You'll be way out of its efficiency range. The 60 trim however you'll be on the edge, it can do 400 RWHP. Don't expect more from it though. 300~370 is a nice range for the 60 trim T04E. The 60-1 and 62-1 are more suited to the 400hp and are NOT 500 RWHP turbo's. Their usualble range would be 300~430 on a 13B.
Nothing wrong with a T04E 60 trim though, just spec it correctly. *T04E 60 trim Compressor wheel *T04S compressor housiong (4" inlet, 2.5" disscharge .7 A/R) *360 degree thrust or the full ball bearing option. *water cooled (wet) CHRA for longevity *P-trim turbine wheel *1.00 A/R or for quicker spool up .84 divided turbine housings on a divided manifold OR if using a collected manifold (not running a divided you see slower spool up AND slightly less peak power) .96 or .81 open valute turbine housings. DO NOT CONFUSE A/R WITH TRIM LEVELS!!! EX: .6 A/R stamped on the turbo compressors housing is the A/R (Area/ Radious) of the housing and IS NOT THE COMPRESSOR TRIM. Virtually any trim can be placed into any A/R housing. If you don't understand these terminologies, do more reading. ~Mike........... |
400whp may be possible but do you really want to push the engine and turbo that hard?

I've done it. It does require near 20psi and pre compressor methanol injection along with everything built correctly; real strong ignition system, a motor based on new engine parts, and a good tune..

hmmm thanks for the info guys, think ill look for something a little bigger, want to get 400whp but at 20psi at most and no meth injection, maybe ill stick to the 60-1.

I run HKS kit with a .57 1.00 divided Ptrim T04e turbo and with a Steve Kan tune hit 391 rwhp at 15lbs.

Heres a calculator I made. It does pretty well at estimating RWHP if you know how many lbs/min your turbo flows. You can also enter a power level and it will calculate the required Lbs/min turbo that you would need. The last data-block shows the total amount of fuel you'll need in cc/min.

^^^ I agree that dyno numbers can vary a lot but consistent 119-120 mph traps would suggest a higher hp #.

Goddamn rotaries, ive seen 520bhp (bench dyno) from a 57trim on a 2litre 4cyl at 2bar+, but on my 13B, no chance, lol

I had a street port with a t04e 60 trim 96 a/r t4. Car ran great, spooled pretty quick , although I never had it on the dyno, I am fairly confindent the made high 3-400s on 15 lbs and pump.

Well got everything assembled and took the car to dyno last saturday by Dave@KDR(scroll up a few posts for build details). Got a few runs in at 15psi and they were in the 380s. We had trouble with the boost controller at first and it went a little over 16psi. I was shocked to see it lay down 405hp/354 tq at that level. Dave felt it was in it's efficiency range at that point and thought it could do 450 with some more boost. However, I'm not running a 3bar map sensor, or aux. injection for that matter, so we didn't try for it. Running the ID2000 secondaries so there was plenty of fuel. I recorded a 382 run at 15psi here:
