Profec B Spec II issue

Well, I got my Spec II a couple weeks ago. It seemed to work really well off the bat. I'd go out, get it set and the next day, it would start surging my boost up and down. I'd play with it again and get it right then a day or 2 later, same thing.

I think it may be my "overboost" limit. The Greddy reads 2psi higher than both my Autometer gage and Haltech. I'd set the limit at 17.5psi knowing my target max boost was 15. I raised this up to 19.5 and the surging stopped. Well, once again all seemed well until I headed to the dyno last week. I took it easy the whole way there to save my fresh plugs(I knew I was a little rich). Just before I got there, I brought the boost up and once again, it was surging. I set the limit up to 21 PSI and it still surged the whole time on the dyno.

I'm going to try and set the overboost limit duty cycle the other way, down to 0%. Right now I've got it cycling 99%. One guy told me I had this backwards for an aftermarket wastegate? This could make since except why wouldn't it do this all the time instead of letting me set it up fine and then change the next day?

I'm running a very low "gain" right now too, like 3%, and my "start boost" is mild at like 8psi.

I'm a little concerned since Greddy went with the same solenoid that the AVC-R uses on the SpecII. A buddy of mine had no luck getting the AVC-R to work with his aftermarket WG. It worked fine for him with the stock WG.

Sorry for being long, Scott

Greddy does mention that the Spec II has problems with quick spooling turbos.

Maybe your .84 A/R is one of those beasts :)

I did not know that they where using he same solenoid as the ACV-R...are you sure about that?

The old -B was a dual solenoid. Its was very reliable. I have read more than one ACV-R overboosting story :(

I wouldn't call it "quick" but I didn't have the Greddy with my old hybrid. :p: I'm 99% sure it's the same solenoid. They definitely switched with the Spec II. The old Profec had a pretty big stepper motor or solenoid(not sure which). The Spec II is pretty small. I've had two people tell me that it is exactly like the AVC-R.

Jeez, I hope I'm not screwed. I had some reservations when I bought this "new and improved" version of the rock solid Profec B. Wonder if improved had to do with Greddy's profit margins???

I have the spec II also in my car.

42%
gain 66%
gain limit .9 bar
over limit 1.1
over limit duty 30%

it does not open the watsegate until it reaches .9 bar

im going to increaseing the gain as it should also help in controlling the boost going up and down.

I dont like that the solenoid is the same one that I had on my old avr that I always had over boosting problems with.

I wish I could connect my old profec solenoid up to it.

I have my gain get to 66%

What wastegate are you running? Rotaryturbo(a buddy of mine) had the AVC-R, it worked great with the stock swing style gate. He never could get consistant boost when he went full T04 and HKS gate. He bought the Profec B and it works perfect w/ the HKS. I have a Tial 46mm so I know I've got plenty of gate, just need this thing to control it! :p: I'm starting to wonder if I'm seeing the same issues he had with that type of solenoid and an aftermarket gate.

I run a WHOLE lot less gain. If your running an aftermarket gate, I'll give it a try.

He's running the HKS 40mm.

I guess you could give his setting a try.

I was planning in buying the Spec II, not I might just stick with the original.

yes its a HKS 40mm gate on T04E.

im putting a T66 Q trim on the car tomorrow.

Cool, I'll try your settings! Man, I'd be happy w/ a T04e making 372 at only 12psi. What are you shooting for? I put down 408 rwhp last week w/ my T04s at 15psi. I hurt a seal though, it's rebuilt again(yes in 6 day's) so I may be a little gun shy for a while.

I think you guys aren't setting it right. I recently installed one in my car and am still learning to use it.

How's the Spec II working for you now?

Don't know yet. I'm still breaking in the new seals. I should have enough miles in a few day's. Then I'll try to "wick it up" again. :p:

Mine is holding 10 psi very consistantly. I have been putting off tuning it for high boost. Been too busy and tired lately. Maybe bext week I'll crank it to 20 psi and see how it works.

clarksonrx7 08-01-03 09:08 PM

I just got mine today :-d

LetsGO7 08-17-03 03:00 PM

yo dudes.....I got mine for FD. the stock boost should be (factory) 10psi-8psi-10psi.

I'm try to set mine for 7-6-7 (pretty much 7). what kind of setting should i do?

Thanks

-joe
