it has been a while since oil filters have been scrutinized. the last thread lead me in the direction of the Purolator PL14610 which i have been using for a few years.
Man Chuck must be getting old. I remember back in the day if someone else asked this sort of question the response from Chuck would be, "You young people have it so easy...you just ask for the answer or Google it. In my time we had to make oil filters out sponges we dove for at the bottom of the Bay and inserted into metal receptacles that we hand hammered into shape with rocks."
the old thing is that the OEM Japanese oil filters have more filter media packed into the can, its folded differently than every other filter. its also made properly, IE the threads are the right size and pitch, and there aren't any burs and shavings on them.
in short its just a high quality part. B6Y1-14-302A is the short Rx7 version, and JEYO-14-302 is the tall version.
the NEW news is that Mazda usa has switched to some US sourced POS, its easy to spot its WHITE. its construction is typical cheap stuff, there are shavings on the threads, etc.
part number is the same as the japan sourced part with a 9U or 9A or something on the end, box and filter is white
the 2009 Rx8 uses a different filter and it is still the OEM japanese one
Give me another two months and I'll change the oil filter issue for good. Just have to finish testing and make a couple atheistic revisions; new pedestal on the way...
I used to recommend Napa Gold filters when they were made by Wix. Now I don't know who makes them. Also all their books and computers recommend the little FD filter. You have to ask for the tall thick or short thick filter either by cross reference from a Fram number, or just tell them the number if you have it memorized, which I do. They are behind the counter.

Good to know. The ones my girlfriend buys are black. I think she gets them from rx7.com
Not because they were better, but to reduce inventory.
since mazda probably has 10-12 different oil filter part numbers for all the different cars, i would say that inventory reduction is highly unlikely.
i should dig out the bulletin on the "new" smaller filter. the way they fold the filter paper lets them cram MORE filter media into a smaller can than the previous big filters.
although i do also run the taller filter when i can get them.
I say that because the last two iterations of the RX7 filter also fit the MX3 V6 engine, and the Protégé 4 cylinder engine.

puralator pure one here also. been running it for years. only issue i have seen is the fram units with the cardboard ends that fold up under high pressure. have seen one first hand, looked like it imploded on itself. took out a bottom end on a 240sx.
Who carry Purolator? I used to live close to a Pepboys and they carry them, but now the closest Pepboys is like 25mins away. Because of that I switched to Bosch since Autozone carry them.

Gonna give it a try with the honda s2000 oem filter, big but it fits great and my hondabuddy has used it on every turbohonda he has built... Last time it was a 500whp integra, and since hondas v-tech use high oilpressure I figure that it would be fine on a singel fd as well :-)
Costs about $1,5 more then the mazda oem filter here in sweden

They perform some very nice testing against each of these, 3rd party unbiased. I was unaware of the Purolator Boss until this thread/youtube video. I do not know how the Boss version is different than the ONE that a few members are using. Will have to dig in.
Amazon has the Boss version on sale with a $2 coupon, making it the same price as the ONE.
Interesting! I watched their 3 oil filter test videos and looks like Purolator Boss is one of the top performers.
Looking more into it I'd still choose the 2009-2011 S2 RX-8 version because of the higher bypass pressure (BVPS)
They don't go into detail about bypass pressure settings but my understanding is that a higher bypass pressure provides better cold filtering (less cold bypass) and higher dirt capacity before the media gets saturated enough to reach bypass pressure. So basically better filtering overall and more so if changed with enough frequency to never reach full dirt capacity.
FD bypass: 14-18 psi
S2 RX-8 bypass: 20-30 psi

U can tell all but the Royal purple are made by the same company when they cut them open. I think the difference in results between the wix purlator and napa filters are miniscule. U could probably test 3 of the same brand and get the same variation in results. The product of mass production. As mentioned before the bypass pressure is more important for a rotary. Something no one test for on any YouTube video.
