no boost after removing comp housing
 

Anyone had this problem before? I removed the housing to polish it, then installed it back and I see no pressure wats so ever. When I removed one screw, I could see that the thread in the housing was ripped or messed up. Then when reinstalling it, that one bolt didnt tighten all the way... But I just wanted to know if one bolt could actually make a difference, in not being able to see atleast 1 lb of boost..

Does the compressor wheel still spin (try to move it by hand with the car off)?

One fastener shouldn't keep you from making any boost, but if the housing is not seated correctly it might do it. It would probably be a good idea to fix it (helicoil, bigger bolt, something), though. I suspect that either the housing is not seated properly or you disturbed something to make it not boost. What kind of wastegate do you have? If it is internal, is the actuator present and connected to the flapper door?

its external, and right now the motor is not in the car. So I cant test anything. I just couldnt make boost at all when I put the turbo back in. Ill see if play around with the housing for it to seal better. I did notice a real high pitch sucking noise when I hit the throttle all the way, that wasnt there before. Maybe its a leak from the housing??? dunno, but thanks for the help

Is the wheel hitting the inside of the housing? Are other bolts loose / plates bent? It sounds like something more severe than simply a little leak -- like the cover was not seaTed properly (not on straight).

I know for a fact that the wheel spins freely. The plates you are talking about, its the metal that you bolt onto the housing? What causes the seal? Yea they are str8, although some where a lil bended, but It was boosting fne before. If I cant find out thiss problem Ill send the turbo back for warranty..

I think it was only one that was bent. So Ill see tommorrow if the housing spins freely.

There are usually some little metal plates (sometimes individual, sometimes one plate for two bolts) under the bolts that hold the housing to the backing plate. Do you have those?

Post a picture of the back of the turbo perhaps. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Look for evidence that the compressor wheel hit the inside of the housing, too.

its a plate for 2 bolts. 3 plates 6 bolts.... The turbo is brand new, and the wheel has never hit the housing at all. I made sure it spun freely and it even free spins for a lil bit..

Boost might move the housing, though, so it might hit when you try to spool it up. It is worth a look if you have the turbo just sitting there.

If this was the first time testing it, the issue may be something completely unrelated to the bolt missing on the compressor housing. Do you have the wastegate installed properly, with the valve sealing against the seat?
