It might not be an RX-7, but it is a Turbo question.
Hey guys, first off, I would like to say that I got rid of my 7s a while ago and undertook a S14/RB26 project. I tried asking my question on another forum and got no help. I am in the process of collecting all the parts, and I now need a turbo. I know from past experience that there are some very knowledgeable guys on here about turbochargers, and was hoping you guys could help me get back to my project.
In doing so, I need a turbo. I was originally going to just go for the GT35R 1.06, but the price is a little outrageous, and I was thinking it may be possible to get a similar performing turbo for less (am I delirious?). Let me begin by first stating my goals. I am looking for a turbocharger that will be able to put out 550-600 HP on this engine at maximum load - hopefully I will negotiate about 450-475 on the streets. This car will mainly be driven on the streets but with some track time in there occasionally. I want something that isn't outrageously big and laggy, quick response is a must. Also, my manifold is T4 flange. Is there a decent quality turbo out there that can fulfill my requirements that isn't $1500? Am I naive for thinking that this is possible? For your price range, you will not be able to afford a ball bearing turbo. All the turbonetics turbos are pretty damn expensive, even the journal bearing ones. So I'd say you should go with a journal bearing Garrett T series.

I'd probably go with the .84 hotside and 4" inlet compressor housing if there's enough room. I suspect this is similar to the GT3574 that A-spec sells (P trim=74mm major). |
So I am beginning to get the idea that in order to have what I want I am going to have to fork over the money for the 35R.
Have journal bearing turbos gotten better with spool up, or is the difference between BB and journal very vast? |
master power t70 with .84 hotside should be good

Spool is very good. 35'r's are last century technology. If you want a faster spooling turbo than a 35r with greater power capability then go with the precision 6262. what is up with those 62X or 67X series turbos? I can't find much info on them at all, except that they have billet compressor blades. There are no definite compressor maps or charts of compressor and turbine wheel measurements.

Maybe they do, but myself and many others won't buy a turbo without more definite information than that.

When you can make 780whp on a 62mm/T3 based turbo and run 8's that's all I need to know. The 67 Billet has allready made close to 900whp on some applications. I can't wait to try a 6765 billet on a rotary because I know it will make well over 600whp and spool like an entry level T4 turbo that's needed to have a quick car that can deliver the numbers and not some dyno queen like I've been seeing in here in the last couple of years. I run these turbos at 47-50 psi and have yet to see one fail in the last year I've been using one.(knock on wood):). It's funny you speak about numbers yet we can't keep any on the shelf. Just wish Precision could produce them faster. Billet madness. You might not buy a turbo without charts and such, but tons of guys have and they are the ones making serious numbers. MadMax, you can make your power goals on a 6262 or 6265 without breaking a sweat. A 6765 would be overkill if you arent planning for 650+whp. |
