Hks T51r Kai

I was originaly buying a r85 turbo but that fell through. Now im looking at a HKS T51R KAI and i was wondering if they are as amazing as they are claimed to be. Im aiming at getting around 600rwhp.

What exactly are they claimed to be? With your specific aim in mind, I haven't heard anything to suggest that there is anything amazing about it compared to several other readily available, more cost effective options. Your going to need to line up an amazing tuner, by the way.

Benvprov 12-03-07 11:09 PM

they are claimed to be "the legendary turbo" for the FD, the best of the best. or so thats what ive heard hence why im asking what to expect from it. Why do you say i need an amazing tuner? are they harder to get a good tune compare to other setups?

At that power level, you should be working with a very experienced tuner. IF I was choosing a tuner, I'd pick a guy who has done one of these more than once on a rotary at these power levels.

I still laugh my ass off when homeskillet with the video cam JUMPS out of his skin when it backfires.

I heard Van Haggar the other day, singin' 'bout "One foot on the brake, and one on the gas... HEY! Well, there's too much traffic, I can't pass.... NO!" and my mind instantly pictured your burnout video. Someone needs to set your vid to that song. What was that one video someone made on here awhile back that kept flashing back to your burnout? Post that shit up if you remember what it was!

Yeah, last year somebody made an rx-7 video and posted it on here, and they inserted your burnout a couple of times within the vid. It could have been a compilation of somebody's runs at the strip and after showing a few runs it would cut to your burnout for a few seconds and then it was back to the strip, and then it would cut back to the burnout. It was something like that, I recall.

jacobcartmill 12-04-07 07:57 PM

i cant get over the way that turbo sounds. are there any other SMALLER turbos out there that make that lovely sound?

Andy_k 12-04-07 09:25 PM

HKS T04z at about 1.5bar!

Benvprov 12-04-07 10:50 PM

o...k..well in conclusion what would be the better choice then..t51R or r85?

not quite as big as the t51r though

willub and company 12-05-07 06:36 PM

if you have the engine to push it, I would go with the t51 any day.

Iīm placing order for a HKS T51R KAI BB kit tonight. Hoping to make 600+ before the tranny goes :sadwavey: ... What I have been reading the t51r would make that power with reasonable response. And to me itīs even a pretty good deal vs gt42r + custom manifold and wg DP etc... Itīs f****n expensive having custom stuff built where iīm from so thatīs why iīm going HKS...:icon_tup:

True, but the T51R has a distinct whistle to it that you can tell apart from most other anti-surge housings. If you can find a close up of the housings anti-surge slits and others you will see a difference.

Charles, there is no use debating this with Rice Racing. He has an enormous hard-on for all things HK$. If you ask him about GT42R Vs T51R all you will hear from him is "blah blah blah god damn truck turbos blah blah blah I <3 HK$ blah blah blah don't buy truck turbos blah blah blah."

Riiiiiiight. Ask Ralph(xcessive) how he likes his four year old daily driven 42R kit making 700whp. Still under warranty by the way not that he's needed it. What warranty does HKS have? Oh yeah none. They wont even warranty their TO4Z without a fight when the damn thing loses its bullet nut. Oh and have fun with the mild steel DP's as well. For the price it should be stainless. I'll have a 42R kit shortly running the V-banded stainless TiAL's much better choice in my book. Less weight, better materials, and better warranty.

how laggy is the T51R when making around 30 psi? If I remember, they are pretty laggy without the aid of nitrous. Here is a dyno of mine, on a plain street port, 2mm stock seals and nothing else done to the engine. The turbo is a borg warner S300 66mm extended tip NON ball bearing turbo at 28 lbs boost. I didnt think this turbo was that laggy and has a nice flat torque curve and hit full boost from about 4700-4800 to 8500 which is almost a 4000 rpm power band of full boost and made 610 whp and 455 lb ft torque. Hope this helps the OP for a decent streetable turbo for 600+whp.

Viking War Hammer 12-06-07 08:57 PM

My old dyno-graph with HKS T51R KAI.

27PSI, 603 whp/ 500 Torque

The KAI and SPL can be had in both journal and ball bearing flavors, but the SPL is bigger.
