I’m diving into the world of single turbo setups for my FD3S and would love to tap into the collective wisdom here. I’ve been reading through various threads and am particularly interested in the experiences of those who’ve made the switch from the factory twins to a single turbo.
Keep your twins. If you want a single turbo car, buy a single turbo car. You'll save $10k-20k+ and a lot of downtime, that's doing it yourself.
If you want to do it yourself, can't go wrong with a Turblown kit. 400whp on an iwg 8374 and stock ports, powerFC, cheap and simple and proven. Or 7670 if you want instant boost and twins like behavior, keeping the stock fuel system, much less expensive route and 350whp in an FD is honestly quite fast compared to most things. Don't fall into the 1000hp+ YouTube trap, these are small light cars HP goes a long way. Yes you can make 300whp reliably on the twins if you're in a cooler climate with stock cooling if you only do occasional street pulls, so why do you want to go single?
Making the climb to 500+ is a massive leap in expense if you want it to last. Larger ports can mean significantly worse fuel consumption, worse off-boost throttle response, more fuel smell, and shorter seal life. You'll need a better ECU (R3 etc), larger fuel system, wheels and tires to put that power down, suspension to help put it down, diffs break, trans starts to suffer, and you'll NEED a proper cooling system oil intercooler radiator etc. Oh and good fuel and spark. But damn do these cars fly with real power! And a fully built rotary is just so f-ing cool..
Want 600+? 20b baby. Stock ports, more torque, less stress on the engine, easier on the driveline, and you'll be a straight line monster with room to grow

just to echo the above, there isn't anything like the stock twins, and if you want FUN, that is the best way. its not the fastest thing, but it is FUN.
there is a Time Trial FD out here that does 360rwhp on a Turblown 8374 kit, and it is the fastest car on the track, by a lot, unless something really ridiculous shows up.
its a stock engine, running as little boost as they can get, which is still ~13ish.
if you don't have turns, i guess that is when you need more power. in my experience though it isn't more fun.

I would first start off with identifying your goals. I assume you already own an Rx7. What modifications do you have currently and what are you looking for? Fun street car, drag car, track car, etc?

As mentioned the only downside is cost, and the loss of period correct 90s/oem.

EFR 7670 is small, and quite popular. T04Z was the older favorite for "tuned twins" like power, but 7670 will give you the same peak numbers with a lot more down low. Nothing is simpler than an IWG 7670 setup.
I've got a TB IWG shorty manifold left over after going EWG, I'm gonna build a small light 7670 car next. Likely a kei truck body dumped on rx8 subframes, should rip real good

I have just done a Pulsar 5455g and HKS 'special set up kit' combo. I reckon best bang for buck out there. All the newer offerings are based around the RX7 being this niche top dollar toy car and are priced accordingly
HKS kit is basically the same cost as Turblown. 8374 IWG is actually cheaper than the HKS GTIII-4R kit.
