Obviously those tiny turbos were screaming to ~19-20 and back down to 17-18psi !!!!!

My car made 350rwhp on 13psi and pump gas with non-sequentials, ported motor, and a Pettit ECU. I'm on the stock fuel system so I have tried higher boost yet. Actually, I spit an seal on the big end (175mph) a few weeks ago. I am about to get engine management, upgrade my fuel system, and rebuild my motor. I am hopeing to also be in the 390rwhp range on 17-18psi. Then maybe I'll be ready for a single turbo??

Really, the two turbo don't compare. Yes, the new T51 Kai BB will spool faster than the original T51...but not like the GT3540. The T51 BB is not a true dual ball bearing turbo like the Garrett unit, it has ball bearings on one side only (hot, I think) like the turbonetics units.

Here are a couple posts about the T51 from other members who have or have had this turbo on their cars.

I suggest this turbo to only drag racers

The car is still streetable but it's not fast off the line unless you slip the clutch and get the RPM up there. For the boost pattern.

2k rpm: 0
3k rpm: 5 psi
4k rpm: 9 psi
5k rpm: 13 psi
above 5k: full boost in no time.

I have run 27 psi with the T51R kai turbo. When it's above 5k rpm, it will go to pretty much to any boost you want in less than a sec. My engine is mild street ported so it might spool up the turbo faster than a regular stock port motor.

I have the Garrett GT3540 unit...just not on my car yet, so ne real testing :) However, the guy I bought the turbo from showed me a video of this turbo on an RX3 drag car. This was a seriously ported and built motor, but nonetheless the boost patter was more like this.

2k rpm: 5 psi
3k rpm: full boost in no time.

But also, I know the T51 is capable of much higher boost levels. The Garrett units efficiency drops off after about 22-24 psi. Hope this helps.

GotBoostd7: thanks for the quotes and RPM/PSI estimates. By chance would anyone have RPM/PSI estimates for a T04R. And anyone know about the streetability on that turbo. Ball Bearing if ya have the info.

Thanks for your input GotBoostd7! Yeah, that GT3540 setup seems pretty nice. I plan on having an aggressive street port and I don't plan to run any more than 24 psi, even on race gas. Thanks for all your help! I think I shall go with the GT3540. I guess I'll use the HKS GT wastegate 60mm too. Now it's just time to find a manifold and downpipe maker.... ;)

PM soulassasin. He's the only one I know of off hand that ran a T04R.

If you do really decide to go with the GT3540 please check out www.rpmperformancecentre.com.au The owners name is Tim Possingham and it's probably about the best deal you can get for these new Garrett units. I got mine for about $1600 shipped from Australia. (I'll post pics tonight when I get home) Expensive? Yes, but not compared to the US. Cheapest place I found in the US was Magnus and he wanted about $2k + shipping for the turbo. Also, Tim can make you a custom manifold too.

Who's Tim? And how much should a mani cost?

Tim is the owner of RPM Performance Centre. A stainless steel tubular manifold for an FD runs $780 AUD...or about $405 USD.

WOW!!! That's a damn good price! I love Aussies!

Black680hp7 made 680 rwhp with a T66 Q with a 1.15 a/r @ 28 psi & C-16 fuel.

Here is the thread:

magnus 03-01-02 05:53 PM

yup, thats the same turbo we have on the talon.

I maxed that thing out at 570 WHP on the Talon

IMHO its a wee bit small for a rotary, and that compressor is a 55lb/hr wheel

maxing out a turbo is rare, we got it to go to 11hp per lb, 10hp/lb is normally the max

But an awesome turbo nonetheless. It will be torquey as hell. And very fast boost response. On a rotary you want to go bigger compressor cause of the lower BSFC. I'm not sure if it can make the same power on a rotary, they like bigger exhaust housings.
