425rwhp GT35R powered Rx-8 @ 10psi
3 Attachment(s)
Finished up our new turbo system for the Rx-8s.
Stock block, AI was not turned on. Cobb accessport tuned by MazdaManiac First dyno sheet is with the AUX ports wired open Second is an overlay between aux ports wired shut and open, lower figures are wired shut. With the aux ports operated by the ECU its the best of both worlds, nice torque curve and decent power up top. Kinda interesting showing the relationship between having the aux ports open and closed. This is what we have always seen on Rx-7s too, more intake duration means less power down low, and a lot more up top. |
nice numbers but i would probably run the AI regardless on such a high compression engine, seen too many turbo 8's turn to bricks to think otherwise. also sucks that the 6 speed is a hand grenade with the pin pulled waiting to explode when modding the cars, did you swap it with a turbo transmission or did the 6 speed manage to hold up on the dyno?
had a few people asking about turboing their 8's lately, how much are you building your setup for and what is included? |
Nice, so it was tuned to run with the Aux ports open all the time or did you just do that for comparison's sake? Did you go higher then 1.0 for the A/R for the higher RPM? Nice numbers for stock engine.

had a few people asking about turboing their 8's lately, how much are you building your setup for and what is included? Our tier one kit is $6499 and includes the following; # A T4 60 Trim Garrett To4E turbocharger offers extremely fast spool and a top end that never runs out of airflow. # Our 3 into 1 custom made 321SS turbo manifold outperforms log style manifolds offering better response and a broader torque curve. # A custom steel motor mount bracket to accommodate our free flowing turbo manifold. # A TiAL MVS 38mm v-band waste gate and an open dump tube. # A 3" 304SS downpipe that employs a 3" flex bellow for engine movement. # Custom Stainless oil & coolant feed/return hard lines are included to eliminate heat related failures of commonly used rubber hose. # A custom fabricated front mounted intercooler using a genuine Garrett Core. It includes T-bolt clamps with high quality silicone couplers. # An oil metering pump block off kit & relocation bracket. # A coolant surge tank relocation bracket. # A protective 3M Gentex wiring harness thermal sleeve. # A custom aluminum thermostat upper and lower hard line assembly is included to prevent heat related failures of the turbo system by eliminating vulnerable stock rubber counterparts. A new lower radiator hose is included. # An ambient air intake system featuring a recirculated blow off valve that is designed to ensure proper mass air flow sensor operation and the highest possible flow characteristics. # A Walbro 255lph drop in fuel pump, and fuel injector modification service is included. This service satisfies fuel requirements for 400whp and requires core injectors up front for modification. # New Leading 9 heat range spark plugs http://www.turblown.net/store/index.php?productID=81 |

thewird 1.06 GT35R We did it for comparison. |
Wow nice numbers. Sounds like a high quality kit too. I too am curious to see how long the 6 spd holds up.
|
Very nice!
|
So a much later closing port offered a lot more top end ? The rx8 ports have very early opening times due to the side seal being moved and exhaust port style
|
Below 6700rpms having the later closing killed torque by 25 ft lbs, which is about 10 percent. Later closing offered 40~ish more hp up top...
|
I lost a small amount of power using the water injection without a change in tune on my car, but that's expected. I just like the safety factor :D
Btw....fuckin Unicorn! A Renesis making power?? |
What ignition setup is the RX-8 running? Might explain the loss in power with the water on?

A small vid. We have quite a bit of footage to edit still.

Music is so epic lol. Do you guys have pics of your manifold? Is it finally a proper manifold?

car is just amazing. More vids with the boost turned up please.
|
That's a lot of power for a gt35r at 10psi. I really hope those numbers are ligit.
|
From the dyno on the video, it looks like it only make 301.6 hp.
|
That is video from a week ago, and that pass was un tuned @ 60 percent throttle...

Any street action?

What was the correction factor on this dyno? Altitude? Ambient temperature?
It doesn't surprise me that you picked up so much more power and torque with the aux ports open. Years ago on my nonturbo s4 I picked up about 20whp/15wtq doing a similar test. I think it's crazy that people on Rx-8 forums think closing the aux ports is a viable idea to get around potential tuning issues when the sleeves open. I'd rather run with the aux ports always open. A 6 port engine running on 4 ports is far inferior to an actual 4 port engine that was engineered for a turbo. You might as well do a VTEC delete on a turbo Civic. Now let me ask you this. When you ran with the aux ports closed, what about the secondary shutter valve? How did that factor into the test? Did you control the aux ports using the ECU or manually do something to them? |
Looks good :)

AUX ports closed AFR/BOOST
Boost peaks at about 11.8 or so, scale is not the same as AFR... I attached a photo of another Rx-8 turbo system we built. It has a GTX4294R, NRS seals, autotronic ECU, Return fuel system etc. Plan is to find the limit of the engine. |

I don't know why there wasn't the boost scale on that. That is the run with the aux ports closed. When they open, and we hit the higher power, it lowered the boost to 10psi. This isn't even the turbo we plan on selling the kit with, and I don't really intend on selling it as X power @ Y boost, we all know dynos can read waaayyy differently than others.
I am curious to see how long it lasts. We did 6 hours of non-stop wot pulls, and probably 2 hours worth on the street. I did notice coolant temps start to creep up under full load/higher rpms with hard street driving. Car would need a lot of mods to withstand the road course or summer driving. We will be dyno-ing another one we built next week to try and backup the results. |
