*VIDEO* - HIGHER BOOST - Crispeed Tuned 1st Gen

Well, from the last time I went to the dyno a few weeks ago, We were able to get 409 RWHP at 14 PSI. This was documented In this thread.<IN this Thread><HERE, thread this in>

Back then, we couldn't raise the boost higher than 14psi, otherwise the ignition was breaking up. When we returned, the problem persisted - until we found out the dyno ignition pick up wire was actually causing the cross-fire. Crap!

Well, once we eliminated the dyno RPM signal wire, we were able to increase the boost:

Numbers are:
  • 336 at 9 psi (pump gas)
  • 409 at 14 psi (pump gas)
  • xxx at 18 psi (pump gas)
  • XXX at 21 psi (C-16)
The car:
  • 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE
  • Haltech E6K -Tuned by Crispeed
  • 63-1 Turbo
  • Ford 8.8 Rear End (very heavy!)
  • Isuzu NPR Intercooler (Large)
  • 720's & 1600's
  • Aeromotive 1000
Here's the video of it all:
High Resolution (89 megs) right click, and Save-As <-Thanks Vosko!
Low Resolution (Streetfire) <-56K Only (should be working soon)

Let me know what you think.

I'll post a full dyno sheet soon. The engine is definately capable of more power - We just ran out of wastegate spring. We could't run more than 20psi. Even with the Profec B set all the way. I have a 9lb spring in the Wastegate, and really should be runninng a 14+lb spring to enable higher boost.

It's all good though, and I am verrry happy with the performance, Especially
from a relatively small turbo - deisgned for street use, quick spooling.

Once again - Thanks Chris.

Very nice car man. You are an inspiration to all rotary owners, not just first gen.

impressive, this can really fuck with the v8's

RXciting 08-27-05 12:05 PM

Just Wow. That car is very impressive. Incredibly well put together. The fact that it's a 480rwhp SE is just icing on the cake. Keep it up man, awsome job!! :bigthumb:

Very nice car..gorgeous inside and out. Great numbers :bigthumb:

Jose Feliciano 08-27-05 01:13 PM

I wish my GSLSE was like that why dont you guys open a shop in NJ

Carl Byck 08-27-05 03:09 PM

How much does the car weigh?

Directfreak 08-27-05 03:49 PM

6 point steel cage, 1/2 a tank of gas, everything in it (except me) = 2650.
Without the side bars (making a 6 point into a four point) it's probably 50 lbs lighter.

This is with the stock rear end - I haven't weighed it with the new rear.

I'd guess around 2700 fully loaded.

Zero R 08-27-05 09:18 PM

Very nice!!

pianoprodigy 08-27-05 10:21 PM

Very nice! Congrats.

MARTIN 08-27-05 11:49 PM

did you blow the rear end or something??? on the vid, where you running the 1/4 mile on it?? if so, what did it tell you?

setzep 08-28-05 10:02 AM

Nice! I'm jealous.. I can't wait to get to work tomorrow so I can watch that vid (still 56k here at home). How does it feel on the street with 480RWHP? I can only imagine... My buddy ran a 11.24 @ 123mph yesterday with 485BHP in a 2800# FC. I smell 10's in your future :D

Madmax670 08-28-05 10:16 AM

How's the spool, when does it make full boost?

Directfreak 08-28-05 10:31 AM

Spool is excellent. Especially with the haltech over the old holley system. Full boost by 4100 rpm. This turbo is very similar in specs to the GT35/40

ErnieT 08-28-05 12:53 PM

Incrediable vid! Excellent power results. Always nice to see what qualified tuners can do! Big thumbs up to Crispeed.

mark57 08-28-05 06:13 PM

Great job on the car and video; they leave nothing to question on the abilities of all involved. Simply outstanding!

zinx 08-28-05 06:35 PM

Awesome video and awesome car.

Just a little side questions, What is the limit in boost for C-16, roughly? 25psi? 30psi?

BoostedRex 08-28-05 07:05 PM

Great video!! It was very well put together and edited flawlessly. On a more important note your car is INCREDIBLE!!!! You should be very proud. You've built a very clean and powerful car. One of the best 1st gens I've ever seen.

Zach

Outkast 08-29-05 10:01 PM

Awesome. You guys are incredible. What a freakin 1st gen !!!
I am tired, and very jealous.

setzep 08-30-05 07:39 PM

Hey Alex, have you posted up that 21psi dyno sheet yet? 440RWT is awsome!

crispeed 08-30-05 08:06 PM

The torque on that run on the video was incorrect because the pickup for the dyno was not working properly. I believe it was around 360 rwtq but I may be wrong. Alex got the dyno sheets.

setzep 08-30-05 08:25 PM

I should have known something was up, the math doesn't add up for a rotary. If he had 480hp and 440tq that would put him @ ~5700rpm for peak power. With 360RWT that put's him at 7000rpm for peak power.

Directfreak 08-31-05 08:09 AM

Yeah, when I first made the video, I used the torque from the dyno's monitor. Cris later pointed out to me that it would likely be off due to a spike. The dyno sheet I have for the high boost run doesn't have torque or RPM listed because the optical RPM sensor that we had to use was a fluttering at high RPM.

The car does make power to redline and beyond though. The runs were done in third gear.
Also, remember boost dropped slightly toward redline, and we need to change the WG spring.

MARTIN 08-31-05 10:52 PM

I posted earlier about the rearend and got no answer... did you blow the stock one or the one you had before? and how is this one standing up to the abuse. any difference in driveability? and also what type of lsd... Im sorry for the questions, its just that I want to switch out my drivetrain and replace anything I can....

Sorry, I must have missed the post.

I did not "blow" the stock one. My 1st time at the track I bent the axles on my first launch with regular drag radials. It kept leaking fluid afterwards through the seals.

If I would have kept on the street tires (read: Absolutely zero traction), it would have held fine.

This one is very heavy duty, and just plain heavy. It has custom Strange axles, 9" Ends, C-Clip eliminators, big bearings, 31 spline, Auborn limited slip differential with Ford Motorsports Gears. It really is overkill. This wasn't what I originally wanted, but the installer just did his own thing, without asking me or my tuner our wants. It was a real piece of shit, that Crispeed ended up correcting in the long run.

It's still not finished & as I haven't put many miles on the car. The rear brakes are probably going to be swapped out for smaller ones, as the current rear brakes are are locking up before the front, no matter what we do.

Mr rx-7 tt 08-31-05 11:09 PM

Nice work on both the car and the video! Don't know Chris but he has a great rep, impressive!

papsmagu 09-02-05 09:50 AM

Congrats.......real clean and somewhat stock looking from the outside. i bet you catch alot of people of guard!

dinokath 09-04-05 07:05 AM

Oye pendeho,

You plan on painting that thing any time soon?

That thing is a beast... Almost as fast as the Noid... :rlaugh:

Heh heh heh...

Shows you what you can do with $125k and some time!

Seriously, very sweet. A dream come true. It has come a long way from the cardboard and duct tape control panel and Peo's shop, eh?

The cubes are pretty common but the IC's normally find a way of hopping out before they hit the yard.

13btnos 09-06-05 10:04 AM

You can usually find them on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda...spagenameZWDVW DirectFreak which one do you have? There are 2 different "large" NPR intercoolers one is 14.5in tall and the other is 16.5in tall and painted black. I have the smaller of the 2 large intercoolers and was wondering how well these performed.

I've tested many core design/sizes etc. One of the best setups I've ever used was joining two of the black cores, front to back together.

Yeah I thought about doing that but man it's hard to find space in a Datsun 1200. Would you happen to have any pictures of that intercooler setup? What's the threshold on horsepower for the NPR intercoolers? I've heard 450rwhp but I've also heard of guys making past 500rwhp on an NPR intercooler on C16 fuel.

You mind me asking what was the best core you tested? Was anything better than 2 black NPR's? You just cut the endtanks off and weld on custom tanks that joined the 2 cores together?

Hey Chris you should put your contact info in your sig so people know how to get in touch with you if they need your services. I wouldnt mind going down that way for some tuning later this year.
