85 GSL-SE - 13b turbo build for this winter
#26
good ifno thanks..
I hop eto use as much of the fd stuff as I can so keeping the FD pulleys etc would be nice..
the plug isnt an issue.. Im a machinist and also went thru weld school.. I have a TiG at home and work... so covered there...
I believe its setup for premix anyways.. so no issue for the OMP

if you had a chance to buy an fd that needs a motor and nothing else.. and you have a built motor out of an fd that you just bought for you fb build... would you spend the $10k on the rolling fd or sink it into your fb thatll be worth crap when done
now before you answer.. the big part of doing the fb was to get my kids involved... they have.. but my daughter likes the fd too...
man I am so torn....
the whole wiring ahead in the fb project is almost enough to make me stop

FD's are too expensive. 10k for a shell?!? There is a reason why I got a first gen.
FD's are sexy, too sexy, but way too expensive. And take this into account. If you need an arm rest or a door and you own an FB find another door. If you own an FD.... bend over.

well the shell I am talking about needs JUST teh engine.. which I already have.. and its just $9K...
my fb has sat for 12yrs.. so every rotor, caliper, suspension part will have to be gone thru... needs tires, possibly fuel tank if not a pump upgraded for the engine I have, new interior carpet (aka mouse **** thru car), paint job, wiring to get fd engine to work, radiator, oil cooler, misc expensive stuff.. all said and done everyone says 10K min to do a good turboed fb... and it still will be worth $3-4K
I get the fd, throw in my engine.. be driving for under $15K... turn around and sell for $18K+ ..... yes they may be pricey but they are also going up in value.. not so the fb... on teh other hand I have a soft spot for the fb as I owned one back in Australia...
see the struggle... be $13K into an FB and well... its an fb

Yeah, 10k for a shell... not worth it.
And the FD wasn't a garage queen prior to loosing it's engine? FD's are only about 10 years newer than FB's. That FD is gonna need going through too.
What I'm saying is that you dunk 13k into an FB and you'll have a ***** AMAZING FB. You sink 13k into an FD and you'll get an FD with an engine in it.
Ultimately its your decision, but on this section of the board I think most of us have made up our minds.
And I don't think FC even comes to anyone's mind

I sold my FD and was finally able to buy back my TII GSL-SE and don't regret it at all. The FD is great but I prefer my FB more. Some would say I'm crazy for that.

I havent spent a whole lot of time on the 7, but have slowly pulled parts out of the engine bay and now starting to pull the dash. Had decided to avoid it after reading what was involved, but after pulling some panels I discovered why that damn mouse smell wont disappear... Yep more rusty pee spots and poop piles...
Kids, namely my oldest daughter, had been nagging me to work on it, sadly Im not sure what Ive got to do etc, so its hard to point them in the right direction... But they were excited just to undo screws and pull parts...
Sand blasted the blue paint off of the UIM and front cover. Painted the engine mount, front cover and UIM the same color as the trans.. testing out the color idea... thinking the army green aka olive drab but I am not 100% sure on final color...
probably go black on the engine bay so if after I paint the car and I decide on another color it wont matter. The wife likes the color from the slammed fb in canada thread.. ( https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread...-972140/page9/) so do I and my daughter likes the color it is now, Im not a huge fan. I am trying to avoid a loud bright color. Although id be ok with the BP Visco green... Im more going for the subtle but sexy...
I got to build another Rubens tubes at work for the Physics Dept... sometimes we get some fun builds at work...
the first pic is of how the shop sits right now... finally got around to cleaning the other half of the workshop, so the wife doesnt complain about parking outside during winter. Actually the plan is to be able to park both cars in by turning the rx7 sideways so the golf tdi can fit.
Been reading up on a bunch of threads trying to get a direction for all I hope to do...
suspension, big brakes, interior stuff...
Frustrating reading thru a bunch of threads with turbo builds only to have them never finish the threads... aaagh...
also made a quick OMP cover for the front cover out of 316L on the flowjet. May tweak the shape a little more to get it right on.. or not.. I also started designing a new CAS cover for fun

starting point... Will try to cut some blanks at work tomorrow, mill thw sides and test them this week for fitment and redesign.. Then once ready I will weld them onto the cover
After messing around with cutting templates i grabbed the kids playdoh.. Pushed it in.. Shaped it.. Measured and drew in solidworks..

That color is gonna look awesome... I toyed with the idea of using a more recent Mazda blue color rather than original silver. Wasn't brave enough. What color is that? And, I'm stillll looking for the "jealous" button to click on here every time I see your garage.
We have these young new engineers we interview at work and most ME's have solidworks on their resume'. It's cool to see what it is - kinda like AutoCad with more powerful 3D capability? Can't wait to see how your design builds out and comes together.

yeah I am not an engineer.. I went to machinist school and work at a research shop on a University campus.. beauty of it is we get to work with students/professors from start to finish.. at times they will come in with a chicken scratched drawing on a napkin to a fully 3d designed product...
we then make it... we turn, mill, laser, flowjet, weld and stuff... its a dream job cause we get to do it all.. not just press a button and make chips...
that being said.. I am still learning everyday....
