Z06 wars have begun....

My buddy picked up his '06 Z06 Vette yesterday. His stepdad has one too. They are both going to Moroso with me to race my white FD, most likely next weekend if they get sufficient break-in miles by then. I am pretty scared, they run 11.5 @ 127 bone stock (445 rwhp stock and less than 3100 lbs). 0-60 mph is 3.5 seconds (hits 60 mph in 1st gear) and top speed is 198 mph stock. Base price was $69k each and 83k out the door. Any high power 7s are welcome to join the fun, this should make some great footage. I gave my friend pointers on drag racing his '05 RX8 which is now for sale, and he knows how to drive. Both of them are good drivers and willing to race, mostly on the track though, since these cars will hit insanely high speeds in a flash and we would like to keep our lives/licences. Let the Z06 wars begin.......... (help! :( )

So what's the big deal? You want your 10+ year old 7 to compete with up-to-date technology? Seriously, I really wouldn't worry about it and just go out and have fun. :)

90WhiteVrt 11-04-05 12:55 PM

Without upgraded turbos and suspension mods you might as well bend over. :ky:

i don't think he has that much to worry about, i've seen his car run mid eleven's all day

Stanello 11-04-05 05:07 PM

That's gonna be a good match-up. Good luck!!!

Outkast 11-04-05 10:26 PM

Well the weekend crept up on us real fast and neither does this guy have enough break-in miles nor is my car ready (tune-up, race gas, etc...). I will try to make up for it with a short preview video. In the meanwhile, thanks for encouraging me Paps, although those things run mid 11s bone stock with 19 inch street tires and average drivers at a higher trap speed than I have been able to achieve so far... I have confidence that I will give this guy a very competitive run or pull on him a little by luck ( he still has to figure out his numerous traction control settings). The cool thing is that he is a good friend and will not redlight on me on purpose and is willing to win or lose on tape for sport.

Keep us posted!! Good luck

SkylarNeedsParts 11-07-05 07:19 PM

those 11.5 second runs were done by people from car and driver (at least thats the same numbers the magazine put out) who are way better than average drivers.. but good luck anyways :)

Outkast 11-07-05 09:05 PM

Thanks. Today I got my first ride in the blue one, he redlined the first 3 gears for me. It feels very scary, it pushes you in the seat very hard when he nails it from 3000 rpm, and the front lifts up very hard and high in 3rd gear at around 100 mph. He wants to dyno it next weekend, and possibly do a few runs with me.

Outkast 11-07-05 10:34 PM

They are faster than the new 510 hp 8.3 liter Vipers, and about just as fast as the supercharged Ford GT that costs twice as much. I need race gas.....

13B_boost 11-07-05 10:39 PM

You need a prayer............:(

12akid 11-07-05 11:18 PM

dam those the new vettes are like that i seen a turbo se-r beat one at the hang outs.

Outkast 11-07-05 11:30 PM

The 400 hp regular one runs 12.7s. Impressive, but not as scary as 11.5s. I'll race a C6 on low boost any time

Well, the C&D people are actually usually pretty bad with their driving, but in this case, they are up there. A good driver won't have a terrible time extracting a solid mid 11 out of those cars. Friend of mine has done it twice already, once on his first time out.

Either way, it would be fun to watch.

just regap their spark plugs when they aren't looking ;)
or just leave one out :bigthumb:

Outkast 11-09-05 10:58 PM

We practiced launching the Z06 today. Out of a half dozen times, his best 60' was 2.2. He spins continuously and violently through 1st and second with the traction control off launching at 1500 rpm. With the traction control on he bogs from 2000 rpm. The car launches way way better with the traction control on from 3500 rpm, although we did not measure the run, it is much much healthier and has to be around 1.7-1.9. This is on a crappy street and 35 psi in the 19 inch tires.

Outkast 11-09-05 10:59 PM

He is dynoing for sure this Saturday and expecting 440 to 450 wheel horsepower. The following weekend we're going to the track. Car currently has a little bit under 500 miles.

First gen man 11-10-05 12:28 AM

lol.. just tell him that you paid half of what he for his car and you kept up pretty good. and gigle at his money spending...

Totmacher 11-11-05 03:35 AM

I wish i had my engine rebuilt already, i woulda helped you out for sure. I ate me a couple of c6's pretty nasty, I wonder how i would do with a zo6. I think you have a chance btw, just do it, who cares if u lose. They are proly still learning their cars anyways.

Outkast 11-11-05 05:56 AM

That's definitely true. He never turns off his traction control, and with good reason. Launching it on the street is near impossible. From what I can tell though, the car is almost untouchable from a roll, and I am pretty sure it will run a high 11 at the track with any kind of launch. The things are well over a full second faster than the already impressive C6. Congratulations on taking those out, somebody's got to do it.

How did you measure those 60ft times? Where you at the track? If so what did he run? It doesn't sound like you were at the track, so how accurate are those 60ft times then? Just an observation....

Probably a G-tech meter.

I thought those only measure 0-60 and 1/4 mile not 60ft times. Either way, those things give very inaccurate readings.

Outkast 11-12-05 05:14 PM

Yes, a G-tech pro was used. It is only accurate at estimated 1/4 mile ET from my experience. About 1 hour ago we just dynoed the car and it made 424 rwhp and 400 rwtq hitting the rev limiter in 4th gear with the A/C on (accident). Temperature was 94 degrees.

NAHH!! 11-16-05 07:15 PM

12a powerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Outkast 11-17-05 06:05 PM

It would be really nice if someone with a 12A could take him out... I'm thinking a bridgeport and some spray outta do it...maybe on slicks? Anyway, this Friday is 3-day bracket racers only and next week it's slicks only so it won't be until December 2nd that we can run (we have school on Wednesdays). There the date is set. Hopefully the track won't be closed yet for the holidays. There will 1500 horsepower between the three of us :)

DGnizer 11-18-05 12:03 AM

I thought they kick you off moroso last time you where there because you didn't have a roll cage and otehr stuff they require once you dip below 11.5? Anyway good luck on the race and I know you'll do good.

Outkast 11-18-05 06:43 AM

Roll cage is supposed to be from 11.0 - 11.5. My best time that day was 11.53. But I guess since I ran high 11s 5 times in a row they took notice? They did kick me out, even told me not to come back. It was after my 11.78 run at 124.32, they blocked me off with a go-kart and flashlight when I tried to get back in line. I hope that by purchasing a jacket, harness bar and 5-pt harnes in addition to the safety items I already have, I can get away with a few more mid-11 sec runs, just enough to roast this Z0Slow :)

Outkast 12-01-05 09:04 PM

LOL - as long as you lauch as well as you spell I'll be okay tomorrow. Welcome to the board and I look forward to both of us getting kicked out of Moroso for running 11s. In all seriousness, your car pulls extremely hard even while spinning, and you will have double the traction on the strip surface and with the lowered tire pressures you are planning to run. The only parts I overnighted were a set of 5-point harnesses and a mounting bar, none of which got installed in time or improves performance. And unfortunately I do have to run race gas to have even a fart of a chance of beating your pump gas, paper tag factory stock supercar. You suck and will lose tomorrow and get kicked out for being gay :)
The weather looks great for tomorrow and it's going to be a blast. I admit I'm scared because I am somewhat of an underdog although I will take you out tomorrow, tire spinning rookie kid. ;) See ya at the timeslip booth when you catch up

LazRx-7 12-01-05 11:14 PM

Well i maybe a rookie but lets leave it as it is then the day after the race will post about it here to see who gets the last laugh.......Well good luck friday your need it :fawk:

someones video taping this right?

Outkast 12-03-05 02:19 PM

The first battle of "Z06 Wars" was more like a bitchfight..... :rlaugh:
The good news is that we made it up there and back safely and did not street race except one SL500 that continually got his ass handed to him by both of us. At one point we tried to play as I was tuning my boost but in the ice cold air with a vented hood in 3rd gear I quickly hit 17 psi on a 50/50 mix of street/race gas and knocked. :( No major harm done though. Laz in the Z06 managed to cut outstanding reaction times all night long, I guess he is a natural being that it was his first time. We got a total of 6 runs, 5 against each other and all on tape. Now for the bad news: :wallbash:
1. Neither car came even close to the times they should run.
2. I completely destroyed my clutch beyond the point of being usable.
3. Only one of the runs were side by side, and only because we both screwed up.
4. My wife was unable to record the 30 second 2nd gear burnout I did that killed my clutch.
5. We also did not get on tape Laz destoying a Cobra.
6. My reaction times sucked.
7. My pos computer won't accept the raw footage, altough I am buying another PC just to edit vids, I will eventually post the vid but now it can only be seen offline and in it's raw form.

The plan was to run only against each other although many people begged to run the Z06, including a GT2 twin turbo Porsche that came on a trailer and ran 11.5 with only 2k miles on it. We both had to sign "N0 11's" due to helmets as our only safety item. I know some people don't take that seriously, but people have, do and will get kicked out for running faster than allowed, so a smart racer leaves the full blast runs until the end. For this reason, I let off and/or slammed the brakes halfway down the track on the first 3 runs, as indicated by my trap mph.

Outkast 12-03-05 02:29 PM

1st run
6:50 pm
I redlit by a hair (.470), while Laz cut an excellent tree (low .600s all night, one .57)
I do a weak burnout, yet manage to hook a 1.862 60', the best for the night.
Z06 bogs, (2.208) and I end up in front, slamming my brakes hard twice at the 1000 ft mark.
Z06 gets confused from me braking, and stops prematurely :(
RX-7 12.701 @ 77.64
Z06 - 12.674 @ 97.71

Outkast 12-03-05 02:37 PM

2nd run
7:06 pm
Another crap burnout and another redlight by me as we both get horrible launches ( me: 2.147, Vette: 2.215). Z06 gets a fairly solid run in, only the start hurt his time, however since I redlit and also got a little better launch we ended up far away from each other so once again I slammed my brakes in fear of getting booted before we get a good competitive side by side run in for the video. (kicks himself in the nads for jumping the gun).
RX-7 12.629 @ 89.86
Z06 - 12.413 @ 119.58

Outkast 12-03-05 02:47 PM

3rd run
8:46 pm
Due to long and crooked staging lanes and people skipping / leaving, we end up against other people. Laz runs a 12.2 @ 122.5 mph and devours a 2002 Cobra that ran 13s.
I ended up facing an LT1 Camaro that had a T04S turbo mounted by his muffler. I cut a .600 tree, my only decent one of the night and a possible personal best, while the V8 falls asleep and gets a 1.357 R/T. Because of this, there is a buslenght between us by 3rd gear, so I put it in neutral, and roll slowly through the traps. Another wasted run.
RX-7 12.602 @ 91.38
Blown F-body 12.353 @ 119.12

Outkast 12-03-05 03:04 PM

4th run
10:00 pm
We agree that it's time to get serious, and this run there will be no letting off and no Mickey Mouse shit. He is confident now, having improved significantly on each of his first 3 runs, and now trapping speeds worthy of high 11s. I decide to do my first ever burnout with some cojones (dropping and holding 2nd gear at 6k, heel on the brakes, sideways for a half a minute with tons of smoke). People are taking pictures, I'm thinking this is going to be great. The lights drop and neither one of us redlights, with Laz getting the better reaction time (.716 vs my RX-7's .840). I was thinking my tires we going to grip a lot more this time due to the massive burnout, so I launch at 5k. I spin all through 1st gear. I get a 1.979 60' vs. the Z06's 2.175. Due to his R/T, however, he's right next to me and I'm shitting my pants so I powershift 2nd with the tires still not gripping, and my clutch slips BAAAAAD all the way to redline, and barely increasing mph. Now at redline with the Vette still threatening I have no choice but to go through the gears, the clutch already overheating and slipping real bad, and each powershift being made at too low of a speed. I basically went down the whole track with the tach on redline and the car barely picking up speed. The only thing that saved my behind from getting smoked like the 6 puck organic stage 1 street clutch was that somehow Laz shifted 3rd too hard without letting off the gas so his clutch slipped momentarily due to the 470 ft/lbs of torque and he wasn't able engage 3rd gear properly. That messed up the poor guy's whole run, meanwhile I was choking on clutch fumes coming through the A/C vents for the next 45 minutes.
RX-7 12.228 @ 117.78
Z06 13.318 @ 98.46

Outkast 12-03-05 03:19 PM

5th run
10:19 pm
Both of us discouraged and unsure how my cluch will hold up having cooled off only minutes, I drive around the water box this time. Like a dumbass, I redlight by a little bit again and the Z06 gets a .572, which is awesome. Not only is he good on the lights, but also consistent. Next up is another pair of Honda worthy 60' times, my 2.124 to his 2.208. I am now shifing slower to avoid clutch slip, but it does anyway pretty bad in 2nd only. I let off for a short time and get back on. The clutch grips, and I go through the rest of the gears granny shifting (and not double clutching like I should LOL). Laz gets an OK run, his time only hurting from the bad launch.
RX-7 12.260 @ 122.86
Z06 12.410 @ 120.53

Outkast 12-03-05 03:37 PM

6th and final run
10:54pm
As soon as we return to the diminishing line of cars, the staging lane is blocked off behind us by a Moroso truck. We will be the last two to run that night, and are feeling lucky. The air is now freezing cold, and my clutch is gripping ok as long as I don't shift hard. Laz has 5 runs worth of practice so we both think this last run will be spectacular. He is hoping for an 11.99 and I want him to get it as long as I win by an inch. ;)
The track is silent as we line up for the last time. I drive around the water box again as he does a pretty cool dry hop. On the 3rd yellow, the sound of teeth chattering is interrupted suddenly by the merciless roar of the 7 liter big block punishing the tires combined with the raspy scream of the ported 13B competing for attention. Mr. R/T pulls off another pimp tree with a .595, and I'm just glad I didn't redlight (.769). His reaction advantage is quickly defeated by his horrible 2.576 60' (spun wildly). My launch isn't near respectable either, a 2.132. The race is pretty intense at first, it is clear that I have no power advantage what so ever. Unfortunately, in the heat of the moment Laz fell victim to the long throw gates of the Z06 shifter, and missed 3rd completely (he swears he's getting a short shifter and drag radials, I'll be f@#cked then). To complement my ricer lauch, I shift slow to prevent clutch failure, finishing several cars before the Z06, who is no longer trying.
RX-7 12.405 @ 121.78
Z06 13.557 @ 112.47

Outkast 12-03-05 03:49 PM

I hope that write-up compensates for the long time it will take to make this vid. Although I am somewhat disappointed by the results, it was definitely a blast and a great learning experience for both of us. Congratulations for running very low 12s at over 122 mph on your first time ever at the track, Mr. LS7. I also give you props for driving safely the whole way up and back, except for the 130+ mph blasts that were necessary after the toll booths, since you didn't have Sunpass like us. :) You didn't redlight once, and your worst R/T was a very low .700. I hope you make a habit of going to the track altough it is very far, because now you see that driving on the street is totally different and tractionless in real powerful cars. Laz had his car in service all day (failed injector), desperately trying to get it ready in time. A sign of a true racer in the making, not backing down even with a legitimate excuse.
