I'm not in a rush. Still broke from the holiday's. I'll check Rock Auto. Yeah, Trix is usually expensive. I have ordered things from them over the years. Just grateful there's still some specialty all rotary parts places still left. So I support them when I can.
I'm not going to work on it until it's warmer anyway. Once I get the parts and we have a decent day of weather I'll get started.
Ya'll have a great New Year!

thumpgun 06-01-15 06:56 AM

Thought I'd post a few RX-7 shots. Got the GS out for a ride yesterday so I made some photos. Slowly getting some new parts for both cars. Excited about some project ideas. Hope everyone is doing great!

Looks like someone got a GoPro. Nice shots. Your cars are both in really good shape. I had my vert out the other day. It needs u-joints and wheel bearings so I haven't been racing it. I need to quit putting that off.

thumpgun 06-30-15 09:30 AM

Yeah, I got the GoPro for Christmas from my wife. I did some videos in the RX-7, 240Z and my Beetle. Mostly made a lot of pictures with it.
I got my idler arm and radiator for the '85. Going to get it installed when I have a chance. Then wheels, tires, and slight suspension upgrade will be coming up next.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...29ec07c153.jpg

LizardFC 07-07-15 09:32 PM

Nice stuff, I have that arm on my FB. Don't forget, the bolts go all the way through the frame rail so put a wrench on each end of it. I must've sat there turning just one side for 5 minutes before I realized that :dunce:

thumpgun 07-14-15 07:41 AM

Lol, Yeah I remember your earlier post about that. So I made a mental note of it. I'll get it started when I have some extra time. And it's not 1000 degrees or pouring rain like a monsoon. Seems to be all we are getting lately. It's so damn humid I can hardly breathe outside.

LizardFC 07-20-15 07:33 PM

Yeah, this weather sucks. It's too hot to work on anything, and too rainy to drive the vert. I bought an 8 just so I'd have something with a solid roof to play in.

LizardFC 08-01-15 11:29 PM

I got my first gen back from the cage builder last weekend, so that project is back on. It was in Atlanta for a couple months but I think they did a stellar job. Here's some pics:

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5f230313b4.jpg

I've got a ton of work still to do, but having the safety stuff done is a big relief. It's got a NASA logbook so when I get everything else finished, it's eligible to do just about anything I'd want to do with it, from hill climbs to stage rally. Right now I'm trying to work out how to get the dash back in. I removed about 30lbs of frame and trimmed about 4 inches off each end so it would clear the cage. I'm going to reinforce it inside with fiberglass and probably make some aluminum brackets to get it bolted in place. I'm trying to retain as much as I can of the interior so it still feels like an RX-7 when I'm driving it.

Here's some shots of the new toy:
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...c4efec8920.jpg

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...a3677bf2fb.jpg

20 smiles per gallon, woohoo!

thumpgun 08-02-15 08:20 PM

That cage is wicked! Very nice job. It looks really good and should be super stiff. I'm sure it wasn't cheap. I was going to have one built in my 510 I had years ago and the price was steep. And that was back in '98 or so. Put up more pics as you progress with the car. I'd like too see them.

thumpgun 10-27-15 09:44 PM

I got my new aluminum radiator installed. I promptly broke the coolant level sensor. It was leaking around it. So I tried to tighten it and the top broke off.
Also installed a new Moog idler arm.
And my next project for the car should arrive this week. And I'm super stoked on this. I'll post some pics as soon as package arrives.

thumpgun 10-29-15 08:17 PM

Here's what I was waiting on. Got some BBS Mahle wheels to go on the '85. They're 15x7 ET18. I'm going to strip the lips and polish them. Them have them cleared. Getting som ewheel studs and lugs for them. And I'll get some tires once I get them refinished. Looking forward to adding these to the car. Correct bolt pattern and all!

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...51aeab1bd5.jpg

LizardFC 11-06-15 09:50 PM

Oooh, those will look nice. Centercaps are all there, too. Wheels are getting pretty hard to find for our lug pattern. I really need to get something wider for mine.

How do you like the Moog arm? Does your steering still have play? Even with the new arm, mine still has a couple inches of play that I can't seem to adjust out. I have a power box so it's not as adjustable.

thumpgun 11-09-15 10:39 PM

I honestly haven't driven it since I installed it. The steering was fine but the bushings were gone. So it made a bumping noise, I kept thinking it had a busted strut. Finally found it on accident. So, I hope it doesn't have a lot of play.

I'm excited about the wheels. I've been stripping the clear off the lips. Trying to polish them up good. Possibly have them cleared but I don't see getting them super polished. I'v ebeen working on them, and it's a pain in the ass.

One had a spot someone tried to strip with something coarse and rough. Got it smoothed out some. They mainly are flaking off ( the clear coat ). The centers look pretty good and I'm not messing with them. Just going to get them as best as best as I can and not worry about having them super slick. I've got wheel studs and lugs. Just need to get the tires when I get the wheels finished up. I'll keep posting pics. This has stripper on wheel in front and back one is already finished.

Oh good, we need more rotary shops around here. I haven't had to do a rebuild yet, but with three rotary cars it's inevitable.

Thumpgun, did you ever get your wheels on?

thumpgun 02-20-16 11:45 PM

I'm trying not to spend the money to finish up, hahahaha. I just need to buy some Shark Hide to seal them. And buy the tires. Then I can get them on there.
I was trying to sell some other stuff to cover my cost. But it has failed, hahaha.

But I did get some wheels for my TII a couple of months ago. I'll change them out later. I'm about to take it to the shop so we can get it broken down and get the rebuild started.
Meanwhile, here's some pics of my friends '93 Efini motor getting a rebuild. I was helping Craig with it tonight.

Thanks, it's getting there. First rallycross of the season is April 9th so I'm going to try to have lil Cheeto at least race-ready by then. Right now I'm trying to wire everything back up and get the dash back in. I had to modify it quite a bit to get it to fit with the cage.

I also got some new wheels and tires for the 8:

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...8eca768e9d.jpg

Enkei PF01 in 17x9 wrapped in 255/40 Bridgestone RE760's. They fit great with the stock suspension, although the added grip is causing me to realize how stock my suspension is. So I may have to do something with that.

Thumpgun, is your friend doing anything special with that S6 build? Porting?

Nice cars, love that blue on the RX-8. Don't need any parts at the moment. Hopefully that won't change, but I'll keep you in mind if it does.

I think I have a spare set of 4 of those center caps if interested. I will check the size.

Good to see the FD going Johnny

thumpgun 04-25-16 10:56 PM

Yes, I'd be interested in the center caps if they're the same. I finally bought tires and had them mounted today. I put them on the car this evening. I love them! It rides great and looks great. Coilovers are the next project. And some door weather stripping and window scrapers.
I really need to get on the FC but I keep dragging my feet. Craig keeps telling me to get it to the shop and we'll pull the motor and get started. I really want to get it back on the road.

I can refer you to someone if you can't find any help. This thread is only mildly active. But someone local may get with you.
If you decide to go to a shop call Craig at Phantom Automotive in Chattanooga.

Yeah, only a few of us left here. Atkins Rotary still sells their video, as well as everything else you'd need: Mazda Rotary Engine Rebuild Video RX-8 will be a little different but it's a start. I would also check Youtube. There's not much you can't learn to do on Youtube these days.

BTW those wheels look great! What tires did you end up with?

I'm doing the same thing... putting all my time into the FB and ignoring the poor FC. We've got a new site for rallycross finally so I'm trying to get the FB prepared for the next event in a couple weeks. I got the dash *mostly* back in, installed a Momo wheel and quick release, and installed an MSD direct-fire ignition. Still have a ton of work to do though. I'll get some pics when I get a chance.

thumpgun 08-05-16 08:45 AM

Thanks about the wheels. I love them and feel super lucky to have found them. Made for a 7, correct bolt pattern, real BBS wheels! I put Falken ZE950's 195/50/15 all the way around.
I've always liked Falken tires and have had good expieriences with them. The priced well and I like the handling. Just street driving and "spirited" back road driving.
I haven't done much this whole Summer. It's just been miserable hot. Hoepfully when Fall gets here can get back to some of my smaller car projects. Which include picking up a L28 Z car motor and wiring harness to mess with.

I still have my TII-swapped vert. The clutch is quite stuck on it so it hasn't moved all summer. One of these days I'll drag it to the garage and do some work on it. Then sell it.

What about you?

I just got a nice 89 bone stock vert. Previously had a TII swapped vert, couple of FBs and a REPU. Sold all those, been rotary poor last few years till I grabbed this one.

thumpgun 09-26-16 06:06 PM

If anyone needs them, I'm selling 5 first gen wheels for my brother .
He wants $100 for the 5 of them. If anyone needs them or knows of anyone in the area please pass it on.
You can message me here if interested. I'll try and get a picture of them posted as soon as I get a chance.

thumpgun 10-22-16 11:48 PM

Everyone has probably heard by now that Black Dragon is closing. I finally got the door weather stripping, window scrapers and hatch struts for a very cheap price. I had been putting off buying that stuff for quite some time.
The low prices were great so I got it and installed it. They'll be selling through the end of the year. Check it out if you need anything. All of the Z car parts I wanted were already sold out but he RX-7 stuff was there.
Also, still have 5 stock FB wheels for $100 I'm selling for my brither if anyone is interested.

thumpgun 10-27-16 08:21 AM

These are the wheels my brother has and wants to sell. 5 of them for $100 if anyone is interested. I don't want to see them get scrapped.

Well that sucks. I might have to go buy up whatever they have left. These cars are getting harder and harder to support. I came back from vacation last month and couldn't find Cheeto's key. The Mazda dealer can no longer look up VIN's older than 1986 to cut keys. They also didn't have the blanks. So I'm going to have to order blanks online then remove the hatch lock cylinder and bring it to a locksmith. Stock up all the parts you can fellas, before they are gone forever.

thumpgun 11-02-16 07:07 PM

I know, I hate to think that one day there will be no parts or place to find them. Hopefully there enough stuff lying around somewhere to keep a few on the road.
Madzatrix, Atkins Rotary and Racing Beat are still going. I try to support these specialty companies when possible.

thumpgun 12-04-16 10:14 PM

Hope all is well with everyone througout this holiday season. Not much new here to tell just thought I'd check in and say hello.

Hey guys,

I accepted a job offer and I'll be moving to the Chattanooga area shortly. I see this is semi active, if anyone's into meeting up or giving me the lowdown before I sign a lease I'd be appreciative.

thumpgun 12-13-16 09:31 PM

Hi, welcome to the Chattanooga thread.

There's still a few rotary guys around here. But no one really hangs out. The Knoxville area probably has more guys getting together and the Deals Gap Rotary Rally is a large event near here. I haven't personally been to the DGRR but it looks like a great event.
They have a website and there's a page for it on facebook.

There are also regular cars and coffee events in the Chattanooga and Knoxville area. And there are also autocross events in this general area. You would have to check schedules for these events. I have no info for them at all.

Chattanooga has an 1/8 mile dragstrip and I'm not sure where the Knox dragstrip is. As far as street racing, I don't do it anymore but I'm sure you could find any of that if you looked.

Chattanooga is in the vicinity of several places fairly close. Atlanta 1 1/2 hours, Nashville 3 hours, Knoxville 2 hours, Huntsville 2 hours with racing, car shows, meets, autocross, etc.

Rotary Resurrection is in Morristown (Knoxville area), Mazmart is in Atlanta, Custom Concepts Motorsports is in Chattanooga area.

I hope this gives you some sort of idea of what's in the area.

I also mess with aircooled VW's and Datsun's. I go to a lot of car shows and hangouts. I do a lot of backroads and mountain road driving. Also have an active aircooled VW club Street Panzers Ltd and a semi active Vintage Japanese club called Zeros Car Club. They are club pages on facebook and instagram.

Johnny Kommavongsa 01-05-17 08:57 AM

So any of you guys going to DGRR?

thumpgun 01-07-17 02:55 PM

I'm going to try and go this year if possible. I usually go to another event that falls on the same time. But it changed dates this year so I am trying to plan for it but nothing is definate at this point.

thumpgun 01-22-17 07:56 PM

Hello all.. We have had warm, nice weather this Winter. I got my FB out last weekend and hit the back roads for a few hours. Had a lot of fun and can't wait to go again. Too much rain this week. So today before the rain I worked on starting to remove the adhesive from the protector strips on the doors, quarters, fender.
The strip on the right door one has been off for a long time so I started there. Oh Gawd that shit is hard to get off of there. I'm using KleenStrip aircraft adhesive remover, bondo paddle and rags.
Very slow and I bet I'll need 4 more cans to clean the entire car. it's $18 a can!
I'm going to keep the pieces stored because they are expensive. But the car will look cleaner without them.
I'll post a photo once I get it all finished. Probably be a while though, hahahaha.

Johnny Kommavongsa 01-23-17 09:21 AM

Yea it has been nice.

We took the FD and REPU to Cars and Coffee on Sat. Also lowered the REPU on Sun. Need more wknds like this.

thumpgun 01-30-17 08:15 PM

I had forgotten about the Chattanooga C&C on the 21st. But I don't have any wipers anyway so I avoid the rain.

In Chattanooga, April 1st 8am - 4pm at

Any of you chatt guys know anything about a car show at finley stadium? april15?

STROCKERACE 03-16-17 05:30 PM

Car Show Chattanooga

Got more info on car show on April 15th. Not at Finley stadium but next door at the cricket pavilion. I was told it was to be the first annual.

STROCKERACE 04-03-17 09:26 AM

So Coker cruise in was huge. A bit of everything. I'm pretty sure my work in progress was the only FC or rx7 there for that matter. Lots of cool cars and the museum is definitely worth seeing. It's free. He has the car that won the inaugural Indy 500 race. I'll be going next year.

STROCKERACE 04-15-17 09:00 PM

So the import show at cricket pavilion was great. Lots of cars to see. Saw tags from ga Illinois Wisconsin West Virginia and Florida. Saw an LS swapped twin turbo FC and a couple of LS swapped ffs but I think my FC was the only rotary there. Boo

thumpgun 05-02-17 02:02 PM

I went to the Coker Cruise In. I like going to it. I didn't have any interest in the one at the stadium.
Made it to a Cars and Coffee with the FB at about the end of it. Haven't been to much else except when I took my Beetle to Bug-A-Paluza.

thumpgun 05-31-17 12:39 PM

I sold my S5 TII. It was a tough decision but I did it anyway.

I have some parts I'd like to sell also. I may list them on the classifieds but I thought I'd let people in the area know first.

I'd rather not have to ship any of this. Pick up would be best, I'm gong to go through the stuff and try and list it all.

I have around 20 NA 13B rotor housings.

20 or so NA 13B plates, mixed amount of front/middle/rear

A Blue S4 rear bumper cover

couple of S4 S5 door glass (not sure if L or R, have to check)

set of power window regulators

a lot of coil packs for 2G cars

One '87 S4 TII rear plate

A few more things, Mazda wheel centers, (3) S5 Turbo wheels, set of 2G door panel lights.

I'll update this as I go through the parts. And I'll give you guys a chance before posting in classifieds.

Contact me with any questions. I'll add some photos as I go.
