Yes, he streetported my car on the original build back in '01. I've helped him do some builds. So hopefully we will possibly get back at it and do some.
Yeah, getting a few 7's together would be awesome.

Christopher Jr. 06-24-13 11:08 AM

The next meet is Sat. July 13, @ 8:00p at Gondoliers pizza next to the rush on Lee Hwy. just a casual eat, greet, and meet.

I'm interested in a street port for sure. Inbox me you number to discuss it.

thumpgun 06-25-13 10:24 PM

I won't be able to bring either of my cars the 13th. Neither will be ready yet. But I'm going to try and at least come by and check it out if possible.
I'll tell a buddy of mine that has some rotaries and see if he can make it as well.
Thanks for the info about the meet. At least we can eventually get some rotaries together and check stuff out.
For that matter I'm into any old nostalgic Japanese cars. I'd rather see cool clean and/or ratty old school Japanese cars than newer ones. Not much into the newer import crowd. Although at least their leaving their cars cleaner now. No junky body kits and horrid graphics. And I prefer RWD over wrong wheel drive.

LizardFC 06-25-13 11:31 PM

If you guys have a big meet in the Fall I might come down. My cars are almost getting to the point where I trust them to drive out of town - a scary thought. Maybe I can drag some other Knox-villains with me.

And I'm noticing the import crowd is all driving Euro stuff now. What's up with that? I see more ragged out primered BMW's rolling on cambered neon wheels than anything.

thumpgun 06-26-13 07:50 AM

Surely we can get some people together in the Fall. We can all just keep contact through here. Try and detail it out as we go along. I'll gladly come to Knox when my cars are ready. I've gone to Bug shows up there several times.
Finally getting some work done to them that they need.
I know a few Euro guys with some cool cars. But I mostly still see Honda's everywhere. That fad will never go away, Lol!

LizardFC 06-29-13 01:46 AM

I sure hope so. I've tried to get the Knoxville people to get together but no one holds onto their cars for more than 2 months. I keep seeing all my friends' old rides popping up on Craigslist again and again. Whatever happened to commitment, people??

In other news, I think I broke my distributor on the first gen. I removed the springs to lock it. I got it all back together and the car fired right up. Timing was good at idle but as soon as I gave it a rev, it jumped time about 40 degrees and stayed there. Looks like I'll be making a trip to Pull-a-Part tomorrow...

thumpgun 07-01-13 10:07 PM

I think with rotaries it's either people are all in or they get the experience, don't like it, and bail. I have let mine sit for periods of time. But I don't think I could ever let them go. Too beautiful, different and soul moving to not have in my life. I'm still hoping I can eventually make a play for a 3G car and build it how I want.
Uggghhh about your distributor. I don't think I have any in my parts. I'll try and check and see if the rain ever lets up long enough for me to dig through what I have.
I can also ask a buddy of mine if he has one. Let me know if you get one and I'll try to find something out before the weekend.
Hopefully you can find one! Good luck!

Yeah, in the past 10 years I've only been without an RX-7 for 2 months, and I spent that 2 months looking for another RX-7. They're too much fun to do without.

I scored another distributor at Pull-a-Part over the weekend, among other things. They had an '85 GS that was in too good of shape to be in a junkyard. Poor car. I spent nearly 3 hours wrenching on it in the hot sun and came home with a complete carb, intake manifold, engine wire harness, and distributor. And even some beat up factory mudflaps. When I came home and had a look at the new distributor and compared it to my own, it became pretty clear where I screwed up. So after a quick rebuild my original distributor was locked and functional. So I'm good to go, thanks anyway though!

thumpgun 07-02-13 09:25 PM

Great! I'm glad you got it fixed. I'm suprised you can even find one for parts anywhere. We used ot have so many cars.
You have gotten the whole car! lol. I wonder if it's got any parts on it I could use? If you don't mind would you send me some info in a message. I'd like to maybe go look at it and see if I can use anything off of it for my '85.

isoprovophlex 07-15-13 08:23 PM

I was throwing my car together for the meet. I half finished just in time and no spark to the plugs... I'll make it to the next one for sure probably hopefully.

When is this rotary master going to reveal himself? I think the fd has a vacuum leak.

LizardFC 07-15-13 10:23 PM

Whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis?

Christopher Jr. 07-24-13 09:33 PM

I just wanted to update everyone on the gtg. this weekend there will be another meet at Gondoliers pizza and it will be every other weekend from now. I will be going so I hope to meet some people this time around.

Red Racer 08-22-13 03:48 PM

I've been living here in Chattanooga since 07 with my FD. Yes, I'm extremely late to the party.

tomsn16 08-23-13 11:52 AM

Heads-up for the SE Tn crew.....I am in Cleveland and here is the link to my current 93 FD part-out thread.....a very nice car. Most of the interior is sold but I'm just getting to the engine bay/drive train/suspension. 20% discount for pick-ups.

Welcome welcome, and greetings to a fellow autocrosser. Good luck with your part-out. I just moved out to Maryville, TN so I've been too busy to work on the 7's, but hope to have them Blount County tagged and raising more hell on the Dragon soon.

thumpgun 08-24-13 10:03 PM

I can't afford anything right now. Wish I could. I'm sure it'll all sell though. Good luck and welcome aboard.
I have to keep putting my projects off and coming back. At least I gather a few things along the way.

Doug Smith 12-24-13 09:47 AM

ive live here in chatt for a few years now and i only know of one red FD that rolls around. Been trying to get into an FD myself. Good to know that there are some local guys who enjoy 7's.

Doug Smith 12-24-13 09:48 AM

oh and is there anyone around who can tune and rebuild these?

isoprovophlex 12-24-13 11:30 AM

I use addicted perfomance near knoxville. They will set you up with rotary resurrection for the build and pfs for the tune. They will take care of anything in between that you need done.

I finally got my fd on the road. Down for 4 months cause of an ignition switch.

Christopher Jr. 02-18-14 05:38 PM

Hey, just wanted to let this community know that my FC will be on the road by next week. I'm excited to finally get the car running well! I want to thank the guys at Addicted Performance Unlimited for all their help.

thumpgun 09-18-14 09:27 PM

Good to know about the shop in Maryville. I'll add your number to my phone in case I need it.
Been busy working on so much junk I haven't been on here in a while.
Making a parts list for some things I need for my '85. Hope to get a few more things accomplished with it.

thumpgun 09-29-14 08:38 PM

Took the '85 to a big cruise-in Saturday. I usually take my '61 Beetle but it has the number intake valve stuck. Have to pull the motor and change the head.
So I decided to the the 1G car and hang out. It got a few looks and photos made of it. But it was mostly overlooked. I enjoyed taking it though and will probably take it back sometime.

Which cruise-in was it? There's a big one in Knoxville that I usually go to on the 19th, but it's in the morning. There's always a good VW turnout since it's hosted by a VW dealership, and there's usually a few rotaries that aren't mine out there too. The vert attracts a lot of attention, I guess because most people don't know what it is. Poor first gens are usually overlooked.

Speaking of first gens, I finally got my '85 back on the road with boost. I'm only running 4-5psi right now. I've still got no exhaust past the downpipe and too much oil pressure. But it's getting there.

thumpgun 10-03-14 08:54 PM

Here in Cleveland the have a cruise-in every 4th Saturday from April through October. There's a good turn out for it. It's msucle cars, street rods, etc. No ricers, the occasional Ferrari, Porsche, Skyline GTR, Morris Miner, Alfa. We usually have 8 to 20 aircooled VW's.
There's a guy that sometimes brings a pristine R100 he restored to better than new.
It's a fun show. Usually 400 to 1000 cars depending on weather and other shows.
Glad to hear your 1G is rolling again. If I'd stop wasting money on VW's I'd get my TII back on the road.

That's pretty big meet. Sounds like Cars and Coffee up here. A lot of rare stuff you never knew was around comes creeping out.

thumpgun 10-09-14 06:53 AM

I've heard about Cars and Coffee in that area a few times. I'll have to come and check it out at some point.
We hit as many shows as possible with our VW's during show season. Once I get more accomplished with the 7's I'd like to take them out to some shows, cruise-ins.
I've been trying to get out to as many area things as possible. Missed a few but still got out to a lot this year.

LizardFC 10-13-14 09:58 PM

I'm the opposite, I usually don't bother with shows and stick to race events. I do come out for big shows though, particularly the VW shows where there is more to do than park. We've got a good local VW group here that likes to camp out and stuff. I wish the rotary folks were that much fun.

thumpgun 10-15-14 09:48 PM

Yeah, I go to "Circle Yer Wagens" in May and October in Sevierville every year. I have a couple of friends with aircooled drag cars and they go to the racing events quite a bit.
I haven't been to an official race, or an unofficial for that matter, in quite a while.
I'd like to attend some rotary events sometime after I get some work finished to my car. But there's not much happening for rotary cars. And I'm not into the IA scene. Too many wiggers, Nonda wrong wheel drive cars and rap. I love old school RWD Japanese cars. I wished there was more of a scene going in this area. But it's mostly West Coast.

thumpgun 12-07-14 09:13 PM

Hi everyone.. Since my last visit I have aquired a 240Z. I'm very pleased and I have wanted one for a long time. I'm a long time Datsun lover. I've owned three Datsun's before. But never a Z car.
For my '85 RX-7 I've been looking at wheel adapters. And a lot of different wheels. Definately going with an old style wheel in a 14 or 15". This is just some early planning and not going to be anytime soon.
I used to have a old '80 model SA around here. I got rid of it a couple of years ago. Wished I'd kept the wheels. It had Carrol Shelby 13" mesh wheels. With centers that had the CS logo. Would be awesome to have them for the '85.

Congrats on getting the Datsun, and I must insist upon pictures :icon_tup: I've had one Z car... sorta. It was a wrecked-but-drivable '84 300zx that I bought and held onto for a friend while he saved up the money. It was a fun car, even if I only got to drive it a couple of times. Had the T-tops and digital gauges that worked when they felt like it.

I need some wheels for my FB as well. I have a couple sets of LE 14's but I need something wider. Thinking of having a set of Diamond's made, perhaps 15x8 or wider. It's either that or swap SE hubs over. Not many options for our ATV bolt pattern.

BTW, I was at Circle Yer Wagens this year too. We were that loud bunch in the corner with the Knox Volks banner.

It's a '73 240Z. It's pretty decent. Just going to gradually do some things to it. Wanted to flare it, but it's too nice to cut the fenders.
Runs great has been well maintained. After I get all mechanical things done to it. Gonna do the body work and paint it back original color Green Metallic.
Attachment 633881Attachment 633882
The Diamonds are cool. I've seen a few pics of 7's with them. They look good.
I was there at CYW on Saturday. Didn't take my Beetle. It was acting up. My buddies were there all weekend. Most of them had their cars. We're Street Panzers Ltd. There's 9 of us and we didn't all get to take our rides. Look up our club name on FB and you can check out the cars. You may have seen some of us before.

I'm going to be replacing the radiator on my '85 GS soon. I would like some opinions on stock versus aluminum radiators. Just wondering if anyone had a preference or any info on which is best. The prices are almost the same.
So if anyone has any info, opinions or expieriences I'd like to hear. I hope to get a few opinions and base my decision on the info I obtain. And from asking around different friends and seeing what they think.

That Z is gorgeous! Looks like it's really been taken care of. Good find, and nice photoshop on the plate btw.

I definitely recommend an aftermarket aluminum radiator. I have one in the 'vert (Fluidyne?) and it cools much better than the stock one, even with the stock clutch fan. It's mainly the size. It's about 3" thick whereas the stock is what, 2"? I'm planning on going the same route with the first gen before summer. I'd also recommend an electric fan, although the FB alternator may need to be upgraded first.

thumpgun 12-22-14 08:57 PM

I just typed a huge reply. And when I hit post it said I wasn't logged in and I lost the whole thing. Guess I'll try it again.

thumpgun 12-22-14 09:11 PM

Thanks! I really love the Z. I've always wanted one. Used to have a 510 and was first looking to get back into another one. Then decided to find a 240.

Thanks for the input on the radiator. I was so focused on the longevity I didn't even consider the cooling factors. My car had a electric fan when I first bought it. I've always been afraid the would fail at any moment so I put the clutch fan back on the car not long after purchase.

Earlier on in this thread I had mentioned how I thought a noise emitting from the right front on my GS was possibly a busted strut.
Saturday I took the time and tracked down what the noise is. It's the idler arm sliding up and down in the mount. The center link on the steering or shaking the wheel causes it to bump up and down in the mount.
It has about a 1/4" freeplay in it. It seems it would have rubber mounts in it. But the manual doesn't show any. Just bushings which I assume are metal. I wouldn't think they could be worn enough for it to have that much play and actually rattle the way it does. But that seems the only feesible reason. Any ideas or input?

Get the replacement idler arm made by Moog, its all metal and no bushings to
disintegrate. The OEM idler arm has non metal bushings that get cooked by the
header and causes the problem you described.

thumpgun 12-23-14 12:20 PM

Ok thanks! I'll look into finding the Moog part and replacing it. I appreciate the reply.

+1 I have the Moog arm and it made the steering a lot less sloppy. Easy install, once you realize the frame isn't threaded and you need to lock the bolt with a wrench on one side and turn the nut on the other :ret: I got mine from Rockauto.com.

Happy Festivus, everyone :allcho:

thumpgun 12-24-14 08:46 PM

Ok, I'll check there too. Mazdatrix carries it. And I'm also going to see what my friend at the parts store can get it for. Hopefully after recovering from the holidays and work picking back up I can afford some of this crap! hahahaha.
Ya'll have a great holiday season!

LizardFC 12-27-14 12:08 AM

Mazdatrix is usually $$$. They carry some hard to find stuff though. The only RX-7 part I can get at the parts stores here is duct tape.

t_g_farrell 12-28-14 11:26 AM

RockAuto Parts Catalog has it if you can wait on the shipping.
