Charleston and SC area

Ok... so I posted this already on the "New Chucktown Thread," but I felt the need to make my own thread, so I can get some feedback and maybe a few PMs. :bigthumb:

My boyfriend and I came to Charleston last week, but I didn't even think about meeting up with my fellow rotary guys!! We rode in his non-rotary car anyway (Dodge SRT-4)... I definitely missed my FC all week. He and I might move down to Charleston in the Fall 2006, so I'd love to start making some friends in the area. :)

I'd love to come to some of the SC meets... I've REALLY enjoyed being a member of our local NC group: Raleigh Rotary Drive Ins. Being the first and only female in the group for a while, it's been interesting.

Anyway, hope we can start keeping in touch! I'm definitely a true Carolinian... I've lived in NC my whole life, so I don't wanna go *TOO* far from home. So Charleston is definitely a wonderful choice. :wiggle:

MRX_Rotary 08-15-05 08:32 PM

Oh great, Fall 2006! Just when I move to go to Clemson! (which I will be accepted in)

PerkyStina 08-15-05 10:02 PM

Awww. :) I might be coming down a couple more times while he's on deployment, just so I can start getting familiar with the area, and meeting rotary people... as well as spend time with his friends he has down there.

I'll probably start making an effort to go to some of the SC Rotary events, too...... just as long as people organize them. :bigthumb:

phoenix_flame 08-16-05 12:19 AM

I miss Charleston already, lol. I'm thinking N.Charleston for us to move to...Charleston itself is too damned expensive. I'm interested in getting to know people from the SC chapter too. I'll be getting an FC vert when I get back from deployment as a secondary car.

MR_Rick 08-16-05 09:22 AM

I would love to be here to meet you but I'm trasfering to the west cost in Oct. Have fun

phoenix_flame 08-16-05 03:29 PM

Where at in the west? I'm originally from N. Cali and still go there from time to time when I have the $$$.

Xavier8 08-16-05 07:06 PM

I'll be here for a year at power school with my 2 rotaries. I always like hanging out with other rotarites. Count me in for meets and such.

Ok, you are going to have to come to one of the meets with your spitfire. That is awesome, i have to see it

quite a bit South of me, lol. Xavier8, when I get down there I wanna race one of your cars with my SRT, lol. Speaking of which...what race tracks are there in Charleston area? I only know about Cooper River Dragway and it's only an 1/8th...is there anything else I don't know about for a quarter mile?

snapcaseacilec 08-17-05 06:44 AM

Our meets kinda suck but when we do organize right it all comes together. Our last 6 meets haven't gone as well as expected. Everybody's busy doing their own thing. I group up some of the chucktowners but the ones who really post more for our area are Rusty Shackleford and pepsi87.

Rusty Shackleford 08-17-05 11:52 AM

yo yo heard my name......yep if you look im a post junkie because i have nothing else better to do then stare at this site....im kidding though

welcome and hope to see you at up coming meets as well as others

phoenix_flame 08-17-05 12:24 PM

sounds good. Once I'm moved in, if the meets are on weekends we should hopefully be able to make most of them...but you also gotta figure I'll be attending SRT meetings as often as possible if they're going on down there. Doesn't seem like a big SRT area though. Anyone gonna tell me about some race tracks for the 1/4 or do they even exist down there:(

MRX_Rotary 08-17-05 07:07 PM

There's something like 2 1/4 mile tracks here, one's at Darlington, and I forgot where the other is.

phoenix_flame 08-17-05 11:38 PM

cool. So who has the fastest Rotary in the area? lol, not to cause trouble, but I do wanna know. I know I'd get my arse kicked by a powerful and properly tuned FD, but I haven't gotten the chance to race any turbo charged RX-7's yet. It'll be awhile till I got the chance, but who's be interested?

20B10AE 08-18-05 07:15 AM

:) It's going to take a little time, but hopefully before TOO long, the fastest around here isn't going to be an FD. :)

Chucktown guys, isn't there a dyno out there with decent hourly rates? I REALLY need to get the maps tuned on my car. Right now, I've got too much on my plate to drive down to GA like I normally do.

Reese

coolvette 08-18-05 05:12 PM

phoenix,i will run you.I just have basic bolt ons.

phoenix_flame 08-18-05 05:31 PM

hey coolvette...you got a vette or an rx? I'll get spanked by a vette, lol...ESPECIALLY with ANY bolt ons, lol. But I'll let you know when I'm down there next if you wanna run. 20B10AE, what you got? This is getting me excited about moving down there. Last time I was living in Charleston I wasn't as into cars, but obviously it isn't a bad place to be. Lots of feedback from you guys so far. Looking forward to meeting up with some of you guys.

PerkyStina 08-18-05 08:56 PM

:bigthumb: College of Charleston is having two open houses this fall... I might try to come to one of them.

phoenix_flame 08-18-05 09:09 PM

That wouldn't be a bad idea...great time to see what they've got for future preference:D

coolvette 08-19-05 06:48 PM

phoenix. i got a fd.What stage is your car?1or 2 i can prob walk you, stage 3 would be real interesting. You have got to be CAREFULL down here, way too many unmarked cops.

phoenix_flame 08-19-05 11:20 PM

lol, cool vette...I'll prolly get spanked if you estimate you'd be close to a S3. I'm actually a "S0" according to Dodge...but I can beat a S2 with my mods...I can't touch a S3 yet. Stock turbo can only do so much, you know? I have an AGP wastegate, Electronic Boost controller, S2 fuel injectors, S0 computer(need a S1 soon!), hard UPP, Greddy RS bov, Mopar 7.5mm plugs, ngk v spark 4306 sparks, stock TD-04 turbo dialed to 20 psi(which is the max efficiency on TD-04), Short Throw Shifter, running rich as a pig(need a wideband o2 and a fuel controller). Before the injector upgrade with 16psi boost pushing 251 whp at the dyno. With fuel control, exhaust and S1 comp I SHOULD be pushing close to 300whp give or take 10ish. So yeah...not as high as an S3...you'd take me, lol. I'll still try you though. Just a heads up, the plans may change and I might be buying a 50 trim AGP turbo after deployment and be pushing around 500whp. Nothings sure yet.

rotorchick 08-20-05 12:59 AM

Hmmm...Charleston? Wish I was moving back there :) I've lived just about everywhere worth living (and not worth living now that I think of it) in Charleston and a lot of it depends on what area you want to live in. You mentioned your husband was getting deployed. If he's in the Air Force then you guys may want to stay in the North Charleston (be careful, there are some well disguised "bad" neighborhoods) or Summerville. I would pick Summerville, simply because that area is more like a suburb of Charleston, so less riff raff and you're about 20 to 30 minutes from the base and shoppping depending on traffic. And it's pretty cheap to live there, too. I'd stay away from downtown Charleston unless you like to spend a lot of money for a crappy roomshare/apartment, hear constant drunkeness from local college kids, and smell horse poo 24/7. Lots of good shopping and bars though. James Island-fun and laid back, expensive but close to the beach. Mt. Pleasant-very expensive and overrated in my opinion. Goose Creek- similar to Summerville except closer to the Naval Weapons Station. It's kind of out of the way and in the middle of nowhere IMO. The last place I lived while I was in SC was in the North Charleston area. There were a few break ins done to vehicles in the apartments I lived in but they never messed with any of the 7's that were ever in the parking lot (and there were quite a few). Good luck finding a place, I hope this helps. The Charleston guys are an awesome bunch and tons of fun-at least they were when I was there.
On another note: Hi Reese!!! Does this mean you're keeping the car?! :D I hope so!!! Sorry to jack your thread, but it's boring here and I miss the SE :(.

Be safe!

good area analysis

My impressions after living here about a year and a half...
I would stay away from the dorchester rd. side of n charleston. I had an apartment across from the AFB on dorchester rd, for about a year: Traffic is pretty bad (may improve when they finish Ashley Phos. Rd.), and two of my neighbors' cars got broken into. Summerville and goose creek are better areas, imho, and both are cheaper than living closer to charleston. If money isnt a problem, then james island, daniel island, and mt. pleasant are really nice, but can be expensive.

phoenix_flame 08-20-05 12:53 PM

I don't care much for Mt pleasant personally...a little busy for my taste. I AM thinking James island sounds good. I LOVED going to Folly beach when I was stationed there and James Island is just a connector away from downtown charleston. Thanks for the housing inputs...anyone know how much a house with a 2 car garage would run in the James Island area so I know what I'm looking at?

rotorchick 08-20-05 01:06 PM

I lived at the Merritt at James Island (apartments) for a year and a half and I had a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment with a garage for about $1200. My apartment was brand new and about the size of a small house. It was also about 10 minutes from Folly. I'm sure you can find a house there for about $800 and up depending on how close you want be to the beach. Maybe you could check out West Ashley. It's a broad area that's right outside James Island and about 15 minutes from downtown.

Steiner, sorry to hear that everything is crappy. If it makes you feel better, it's not much better here :(. Zach says if he doesn't get restationed after 3 years, he's not reenlisting. I may get to go home sooner than I thought :D

Derek- BRRRRRR-

-Berry :D (I promise I won't whore up your thread anymore)

phoenix_flame 08-20-05 03:19 PM

lol, that sounds reasonable. Thanks for the input rotorchick. Anyone else have any ideas of other areas?

coolvette 08-20-05 07:06 PM

I dont know what you want to spend on a apt,but i used to live in hanahan at park pl apts.It had a nice pool, clubhouse, gym, and was the best apt complex for the $$ in n chas. Its located off n murray ,off remount ave.

phoenix_flame 08-20-05 08:16 PM

I'm actually hoping to find a house with a 2 car garage. Prefer to stay away from apts as much as possible. Trying to start my adult life out there with a good job and a place to mod our own cars in our off time with my girl, Stina. Other members of our forums would be welcome to stop by for a place to work if they don't have one...as long as we have enough notice and time to do it, of course.

PerkyStina 08-20-05 11:20 PM

....SO if everyone has caught on now, Phoenix_Flame (David) is my boyfriend that I mentioned in the first post. LOL

:bigthumb:

I don't mind the idea of an apartment, but a house would be better, so we can be noisy when we work on our cars at 10PM. LOL

snapcaseacilec 08-21-05 12:50 AM

.

coolvette 08-21-05 07:29 AM

The guy i bought my last fd from rented a storage unit to work on his cars, while he was renting a apt.If you cant find a house to rent, this is another option.

phoenix_flame 08-21-05 01:46 PM

True...but I'd still rather have a garage asap:) It might work in the mean time though...it would hafta be late access though.

PerkyStina 08-21-05 10:58 PM

I always thought about doing that. It's hard to find storage units that allow you to work on vehicles, because it's a liability, since other people's property could be damaged in case of a fire or an explosion.

phoenix_flame 08-21-05 11:40 PM

Or a dumb@$$ dropping a car on himself and suing the storage company :rlaugh:

phoenix_flame 08-23-05 11:03 PM

oikay...bringing this back for another question...how far away from Charleston is the nearest 1/4 mile track(time wise and distance wise)?

AdragonsRX 08-24-05 06:25 AM

or you could just do iti in the parking lot of the complex and just push the car to a new spot so that they dont say anything to you.

Xavier8 08-24-05 06:42 PM

I just got myself one of these one car garages at my apartment complex, and I will offer it and help to any rotarites requiring assistance. I have a cherry picker, engine stand, and enough tools to rebuild 3 cars at the same time.
Looking foreward to introducing my spit to the SC group. I know the atlanta folks always enjoyed it thoroughly. It wouldn't be a challenge to your 300 hp SRT4, but it will knock the hell out of most 1st gens and many 2nd gens. And it shoots flames with the best of them, which is very fitting. Just got my RB alum flywheel in, and she just scoots even better in the lower gears.

phoenix_flame 08-24-05 06:54 PM

That's HOT! I wanna see it! And I'm not pushing 300 just yet. Only between 251whp(last dyno) and 275ish whp(that's the max I think is possible right now). After exhaust, computer and intake I should be at 300. Sounds like a hot little ride though. How much does the spitfire weigh?

Rusty Shackleford 08-24-05 08:13 PM

HAHA wooping a 1st gen thats saying nothing....unless you turbo charge the 1st gen its SLOW!!!!!

Rusty Shackleford 08-24-05 08:14 PM

Go Talk In The September Thread I Started!!!!!!

Xavier8 08-24-05 09:17 PM

thanks rusty, those were great comments!!!
I'm sorry that your first gen is so slow.
The spitfire weighs about 1800 full of fluids. (Maybe I should weigh it one day, cause the number is always changing)
Overall, she is fun, and thats what matters to me.

phoenix_flame 08-24-05 10:07 PM

amen, lol. I agree on the fun vote!
