THE PORT OFF! -pictures of builders' port work

I'd like to put together a thread featuring pictures of port work from all the major builders. If you rank the work of a particlar build high or low please throw some pics up for the rest of us to evaluate. If there is a problem with uploading or hosting feel free to email the image to me at CCarlisi@aol.com and I will host it off my website.

Not to be a killjoy, but I haven't been able to successfully post a pic on this site for oh, four months now :-) There are a bunch of porting pics on the "other" site.

Wouldn't a better evaulatoin of the quality of a builders motor be the power it produces?

Kurgan 06-26-03 09:47 AM

Lots of the time, portwork isn't necessarily something you want to share, or your builder would want to share... unless you just have a standard street port, there is a lot of magic that can go into the shape alone.

CrackHeadMel 06-26-03 11:51 AM

I plan on porting my engine when i get to buying it, and i know forsure that i will post pictures and a 100% scanned templet of what my finished product is. We should get some "rx7club" port's started. theres alot of knowledgable people here and although im not asking them to R&D our ports, they could see a curve and simply say "make it cuve to here" or "shape the bowl like this". I like the idea of this thread

I think if any one wants to be selfish on their port job pics, they are not interested in pushing rotory performance to it peak! Which will do nothing but keep rotory improvement stagnant! It is not like you are going to become a millionare off of your special port job?

formerpistonluvr 06-27-03 10:32 AM

I think we need to try to at least PLAY catch up with the piston engines, and this would be a good start. Now I'm not saying pistons are better (dont wanna start a war), but I AM saying they've had more R&D. This could be our ghetto fab way of getting rotary engines on the same level competition-wise with the piston engine.

That oughta do it. I extend port engines for $350.

That's a very nice secondary port with bridgey. Big primaries too, considering the injector holes and all that. I'm going to do the same on my 1st gen R5 plates. My camera sucks for close-ups, but I'll take a few snapshots for the improvement of all rotaries everywhere! Man, I could almost hear an echo when I typed that. Heh, kinda makes me feel more important somehow than hogging my port ideas all to myself. Get it? Hogging? lol

Click on each part and you will get exactly what you're looking for.

I'd like to see a more direct shot of the KD port face to see if the curve looks any different from the others. Based on these pics the KD intake port goes down further than ITO's. I'm using the holes in the housing and the rotor track as a reference.

My home-ground former NA six port primary (haven't run the engine yet) \/

http://home.att.net/~jeff.g.quinn/port07.jpg

The plan with this port was to make no additional overlap than the stock secondary but to create more duration. It was a practice port to find out where the water jacket limit was. Looking at it again, there is much more shaping that I would do on the real center housing.

Good luck. Its always takes forever to get a car out of that shop. Mine is sitting in there right now. First time was 3 months. This time has been over a month and counting. I figure another month.

Me and another local fd owner are driving down on monday to drop off a motor. Are you going down there or having it shipped?

What ever happend to Judge Ito?

88IntegraLS 06-28-03 05:38 PM

I think his usual haunt is n0pistons.com

12abridgeport 06-28-03 06:55 PM

Very nice pictures...i wish we could also get feed back on all of them. I mean, how do they perform and stuff like that.

There are already at least two types of porting shown here. One is closing intake at a slight curve and the other one closing it almost in a straight line.

I personally think if it's being closed quick like in a straight line but still with a good transition, it should make a higher intake velocity especially if matched in the same manner with the exhaust port.

Also on one of the pictures i've noticed that the port has been extended out into the oil seal a little bit. It's not going to give any draw backs? Is there is a certain rule for doing that...like can i go about 50% into it or something?

vosko 06-28-03 11:22 PM

judge ito goes to nopistons. right now he is internetless and usually only goes on for a short period at a time.

if you port into the oil seal it will smoke alot
