Do you still need a set of junk plates and housings for a mock up? I am running out of space at home and will be disposing of them by next Saturday. Let me know please.

I want to thank Brett for helping me out with my brainstorm the other day.

Now I'm hunting down:
  • ORC559D Nissan Center Hub
  • 2006 350z CD009 Transmission
  • 20B Auto or Rx8 Bellhousing
  • A few other small misc bits
If I DO go with this configuration after all, it'll be with a remote slave cylinder and fork style, not an internal unit like the later 370z/JK41 setups.

who is Brett, and what does this even have to do with this thread?

Mazda Rotary 13B 20B 26B to Nissan 6 Speed 350Z 370Z 350ZHR 370ZHR Transmission Adaptation Kit

Uhh, I mean, it has everything to do with this thread.

cvzg77r 07-04-18 12:53 PM

I’m hoping we don’t have to resort to an automatic rear housing on the engine. But if that’s the only way I guess i’ll have to find a good used one or buy a new one and put it on when I rebuild the engine.

Uhh, I mean, this thread doesn't have anything to do with the Collin's adapter kit. I created this thread in regards to the kit mentioned in the first post. I'm not sure why you would even post a completely different kit in a thread about someone else's product that they are attempting to offer to the community at a good price for an otherwise bolt-on affair.

This is a kit that I and a friend have designed and is quite far removed from the Collins style kits where you cut off the bell housing and use an existing automatic (or non existent) bellhousing and automatic motor parts. It works with existing engine setups- so you don't have to change the rear section of your motor just to run a different transmission- which people with running engines probably don't feel like tackling.

I'm working on building a CNC to be able to produce these in house. It will most likely take a few months, but in the end I'll be able to produce this kit and its associated parts on order.

Unfortunately everything costs more where we are here in Canada, so I can't match the price of Collin's kit. But keep in mind; kit doesn't include any of the other items you have to buy or procure yourself which end up making it cost about the same and you don't need an existing compatible motor setup (what percentage of rotaries use automatic rear engine components anyway?). The main difference is that I don't have machining capabilities, so I pay a premium on manufacturing and materials- so if I can't make a dime for my time, I'm just not going to make it. I don't work for free. And I'm not willing to cut corners to send out a bunch of kits that don't work.

So if you want to buy the Collin's kit and it works for you, by all means. I'm not gonna lose sleep over it. For those that are in the midst of building a motor- go for it. It's a good deal.

I appreciate those of you in this thread who don't have trouble waiting for me to get the CNC together so that it will be economically practical for me to make these.

Thank you for wanting to bring out a quality product. I’m still far off from finishing my car so I’m here waiting to see what goodies come out and this is something that I think would be great for the community. The 370z transmission is great and it would provide for me a familiar feel as I had one about a year ago. Can’t wait to see what solution you bring out. Thanks again!’

Thanks for the kind words.

I sent out the adapter plate to a few more places to see if the price break on 15 of them is reasonable.
I'm almost done with the redesigned starter mount that would make it easier to manufacture as well with a small improvement in its design to boot.

I will be printing and testing this new design hopefully end of the week if the car is available for testing.

Sash91 07-09-18 11:45 AM

😀

That’s awesome news!! I’m mega excited over the new developments. I owned a 2008 350z HR. Giving the rx7 a heavenly transmission feel like that HR would be a blessing. Can’t wait!!

Careless 07-23-18 06:30 AM

Yesterday I had the opportunity to test the newly designed starter mount, which is nearly identical in all critical dimensions, but would reduce the cost of this venture considerably. I'm happy to report that it bolted right in, and the cranking sound was significantly better than it was with the first mount design, due in part to moving the starter gear further out by 1mm to allow more clearance to the ring gear. It works as it should and sounds better than it did before- so I am happy with this design. I think you guys will like it.

The interesting part about this design is that I had refrained from looking at the original design so that I could see if there was a new way to design this to make it fit as good as it did, but in the end- even without looking at the original mount, the design came out nearly identical. LOL. found it kinda funny. got it nearly perfect the first time.

So I am going to get pricing for this part and see what I can do to get 15 of these kits made. Who is ready to actually put one of these transmissions in their car and get it running? If there are some of you who are ready to install once the parts arrive, I would love to get feedback as soon as possible to maintain quality and fitment and to see if there is anything I missed. I also have a new clutch slave design that I would like to test as well, but I would need to know what pressure plate is intended to be used so I can accurately gauge whether it would work or not.

The CZP slave cylinder upgrade with a 1/2" spacer works good so far, so we are not going to take it out of the car to test this new one just yet, as the owner is preparing for World Time Attack; so fiddling around with internal stuff at this point is not an option.

cvzg77r 07-23-18 10:29 AM

I’m ready for pricing so I can buy the transmission and have these parts but I’m not ready to put it all together unfortunately.

Sash91 07-23-18 05:19 PM

Same here. I have set aside the funds to complete this whole venture. But I do not have a JK trans laying around yet. On the look out for one and eager to do this amazing conversion asap!! :)

ptrhahn 07-24-18 03:00 PM

How "complete" will the kit be at this point, i.e.: replacement PPF provision, integration with ECU plugs, driveshaft, shifter?

Mikesfd 07-24-18 06:02 PM

I have bought the 370z trans ready and am waiting for your kit. Looking forward to this in my fd. Lmk when there avalible for sale

Please refer to this post here:

https://www.rx7club.com/rotary-car-p.../#post12178887

This kit is not intended to be fitted to any specific chassis- it has just been tested in an FC3S with some modifications. As mentioned previously, this transmission adapter and starter adapter are to bolt the JK40C to the 13B motors. I cannot guarantee that it will work in every chassis or know what modifications must be done to accomodate.

As for the shifter, Serial9 has a solution that is very reasonably priced for the quality, and at this point, that is what I would recommend going for. Driveshaft will need to be measured and ordered with whatever you come up with depending on where you situate your engine.

It is detailed within the post linked above.

I believe it's possible to have this transmission in the car and running for close to what a T56/TR6060 would cost, I am just working out the finer details.

I will post more soon.

Careless 08-01-18 02:00 AM

New files/drafts sent out for pricing from some other suppliers.
Hopefully to have some good news for you guys by the end of the week.

I'm putting together the fastener and hydraulic hardware list sometime tonight or tomorrow. Trying to work on this as efficiently as possible and putting in as much time as I can to get this going.

Just keeping you guys posted.

should get updates tomorrow on pricing on some of the other parts. Might be able to get the plate and slave adapter CNC'd instead of waterjet cut for the same price. Found someone an hour away that has been good on pricing so far for most of the parts.

this kit should work with any setup as long as the counterweight & flywheel have the same dimensions and starter ring gear as a stock one, and the pressure plate is an FC push style. The internal concentric slave cylinder can't work with a pull style FD pressure plate. So I'm fairly confident that as long as the adapter plate physically bolts up to your iron, this kit will work with the aforementioned parts (which seems like a fairly standard combination).

Currently it's being used on a 13BREW auto rear iron, which means there will be a small cover plate that bolts onto the side of the iron (just under the oil pedestal mount) to cover the hole left by the original square starter mount flange. I don't have a manual iron right now to test if the same block-off plate will bolt up to the top mount style starter flange (above the oil pedestal mount), but once I do find one of those irons locally, I will produce and ship the small plate to anyone who bought it for that application in a bubble mailer, free of charge. Essentially, I just need to know what rear iron you intend to use it with, and I will send out that plate to you (if there ends up being two different versions of the small block-off plate).

Everything else will ship at the time of purchase, and you can bolt the small starter flange block off plate after it's in the car or after it's all assembled. It's easy to access.

The slave cylinder I am using is also a "self bleeding" style slave in that it recirculates fluid to the top of the cylinder body, so bubbles naturally go up and exit out of the slave cylinder and go back to the master where they leave from the reservoir, so for that reason I will just be including a small clip that holds a hard line to the top of the bell housing, where an M10 union resides so that you can bolt it up to the stock master hose with the M10 male inverted flare end so you guys don't have to buy additional parts. You can change it to a stainless line if you'd like, but I will not be including one, as I feel the hard line is a bit better option at this point.

All you have to do to bleed the slave cylinder is pump the pedal 30-50 times, and it will operate correctly. I've rotated the slave so that the tube exits from the top and continues on its way up and out- so the air will not get trapped at any point in the line.

This is the best way IMHO to design this portion of the kit because the starter is in now in the way of where the hoses would come out of the bell housing, so it would trap air and require a remote bleeder. The new version should not require a bleeder.

db2boy 08-07-18 10:44 AM

Subscribed and following keenly, planning out my 20B new build and manual conversion for Cosmo atm; this is def on my radar.

Mikesfd 08-09-18 10:04 AM

As soon as these are avalible and receive it , I can send you pics of what it takes to install it on a fd chassis with manual rear iron and what I find needs fabricated . Looking fforward to it .

Careless 08-13-18 04:27 AM

Sounds good, Mikesfd.

I am still waiting on pricing of the last pieces I sent drawings for last week. Was supposed to receive it on Friday, but they are waiting on material cost so hopefully today. Once that's received, I just need to crunch some numbers, and I can get you guys a close to final price. I hope to return with some good news in a day or two.

Careless 08-16-18 08:42 AM

Still trying to reduce cost without impacting quality of the product here. Got some good pricing, but not where I need it to be yet- so I am withholding $$$ numbers until I hit a sweet spot...

There may be a need to offer this kit without the slave cylinder and accompanying hydraulic components for whomever wants to do that themselves (not recommended), but it won't change my cost on having them produced- it will only change the end-user price- but then you'll have to figure out your own setup with a Tilton HRB or something similar, which is going to be $600+ when you finish that up. (Also, Collins kit does not include a concentric slave/throwout bearing either, soooooo)....

I did find some interesting information on clutch discs for anyone who already owns a good aftermarket/upgraded FC pressure plate to go with their flywheel and just needs a new disc... more on that in a few days.

I will most likely need a deposit from anyone who is considering this kit. SO since i'm about 99% ready to pull the trigger on production, I need to know who is serious about purchasing now, rather than just "interested".

Mikesfd 08-16-18 08:56 AM

Problem is you withhold $ numbers for actually user buying cost is nobody knows the cost ,so there not going to put a deposit on something with out a cost .
